CIP: TeWz, Wand luck.

So I've been trying out blasters, after thoroughly enjoying clearing the orb chamber with Tornado the other day. Right now I'm using a Kenku Wizard, which seems to be good, but a bit squishy. (As nice wizards tend to be!)

This game though, the RNG has really decided to get my hopes up. First came Ijyb, with a wand of teleport. Mephitic, and retrieve with charge left. Read-identify scrolls, find and use recharging on it. Oh, and find an early Vehumet altar at the same time. Go down a floor, and what do I find but a book of Annihilations! I won't have to wait for the gift!. Another couple floors, and I find myself facing a phantom, with almost no mana. Pound my last few Magic Darts into him, dropping him into the red, then try zapping my one unided wand at him. Wait, did he heal? Phantoms can't use potio... Wait, a wand of heal wounds? Quaff magic and kill phantom. On level seven, meet Sigmund (That's mighty good luck in itself!). He seems quite hard to take down, and when I kill him and loot the body, I find I now have two wands of heal wounds. Recharge his, and I have eight charges waiting. Oh, and there's the entrance to the Ecumenical Temple.

What in the world? I think I may have seen a healing wand twice, not counting DD play. And now two in one game? RNG is setting me up for a fall.

Hmm yep, that's crawl's way of pranking you. Infuse you with so much good loot, then throw an OOD to squish you. Kinda curious what the circumstances were with that cyclops, it's one thing if you had no reaction time, it's another if you decided to stick around.

I did have reaction time, and thought I could handle him. I Mephiticed him, and was MDing, and the turn mephitic wore off he got me. I thought his damage output was lower than that, so I could soak a hit or two while re-mephiticing.

My fault; I know cyclopses are quite dangerous even to high-level casters if not dealt with promptly.

Finding Annihilations is great, don't get me wrong, but by the time you're ready to actually use anything in that book, you're probably already at full piety with Vehumet. Finding the book of Power or even Conjurations is probably more useful.

"I think I can soak a hit from this dude" means "I'd better check the bots before I let this dude hit me." Ettins, in particular, do way more damage than you expect. With two clubs, they can deal 100 damage in a round. Assume they'll hit you for max damage with all attacks; if that's greater than your HP, don't let 'em melee you.

Wz -vs- cyclops: confuse, cover with imps.
