Exploding darts really don't have a good reason to exist. They are a remnant from the days of roguelike design before coherent game design philosophy was even a concept that people talked about. They do way too much damage during the first couple dungeon levels, and then their utility completely tanks because they are a rare and highly limited resource that isn't as good as 90% of the other resources out there. About the most productive possible use for the player is to nail adders and humanoids with glowing weapons before they can close to melee, but by the time you hit Temple you should have a much more effective way to accomplish that task. Monsters that hold them are either nearly unavoidable death or completely irrelevant, depending on when in the game they spawned. I've run into a greater mummy that found a stack, for instance; it was much less effective against my Tomb-ready character than it otherwise would have been.

They should probably be simply removed. As they currently exist, the starting inventory of some martial background is the only place where they're going to contribute positively to the game experience, and they make the game worse in virtually every other case. If they are to be salvaged as an actual meaningful loot item and monster attack, they would need to be radically increased in damage, and then probably have suppressed generation on shallow dungeon levels.

I partially agree with KoboldLord on that exploding darts (and sling bullets) need to be changed. I wouldn't say removed, but changed definitely. My proposal would be to make their explosion damage scale with Throwing skill, as well as give them a chance not to explode when hitting something, which decreases as Throwing skill rises (kinda like the likelihood of needles' effects working, or a Returning weapon coming back to you successfully). Exploding Sling Bullets' explosion damage should scale with both Sling skill and the Sling's enchantments, and in the case of a Branded Sling, the explosions would be elemental and get an even bigger boost (late-game they could even rival the most powerful spells, with the proper skills trained up, making for a rare but epic combo for players to try and achieve).

Also, WOW I got quoted! :D Thank you, I feel so loved! You're missing something important about Mitzi's hilarious death though. Turn 1 was "You are pulled into another reigon of the Abyss", Turn 2 was Death By Mimic. I literally did not even have a physical chance of avoiding it.

As far as hilarious deaths go though, I'd probably nominate KoboldLord's completely unavoidable XL 27 one-turn death in Cocytus through Hell-effect Paralysis. Messed up, yes, but hilarious too. I'm too lazy to dig up the thread he put up about it but I'm sure he remembers it. There was also some speculation of completely revamping the Hell Effects, which sadly seems not to have happened yet, though I hope it does-- one senior member had admitted the Hell Effects being spell miscasts is just a placeholder, so I still have my hopes up.

These may not be the most balanced or workable ideas, but I think it'd be fun if, to add to the excellent idea SchwaWarrior had, their ability to explode went up with throwing rank, yes, but also, an instability value was added. In other words, one not very skilled in them could have the dart blow up in their face! Also, when a dart does not explode, if your throwing skill is REALLY low, the text could say something like "You throw the dart. You forgot to light the fuse..." With higher skill levels, perhaps "You throw the dart. The fuse fizzled out before detonation..."

In any case, I don't want to see anything removed because it splatters characters that lasted all of thirty seconds - we'd be losing a lot of cool stuff if that were the case! I do agree they need to be made more interesting/powerful/plentiful, with the power/plentiful ratio being a sort of split; the higher the damage, the rarer; the more insignificant the damage increase, the more plentiful. They are fun to throw early on and see explode, though. One of my favorite parts of DCSS is finding an item I wasn't looking for and didn't have any desire to find, and making good use of it. Pulling on your resources to survive is one of the most satisfying moments of the game for me, and another item to be used wisely is something I will always welcome.

So, when I play Dungeon Crawl for my channel (either as a main run or a throwaway run), I make that decision before rolling the character. It's typically based on how much I'm okay with talking while I play and/or how much noise is going on in my apartment at the time. Thereafter though, I make it a point to *ALWAYS* post the video, regardless how quickly/stupidly I die.

I feel like that's the fairest way to do it and it also builds a realistic expectation to the viewer for both what my relative skill is (because I'm by no means a top-tier player), as well as how powerful the class/race combination I'm using is. Unfortunately, I wasn't recording this run. If I was, it would have definitely been posted.

Ok, no video, although fooTV should be available. However, there are players who don't enjoy steps 1-4 sometimes as the game starts with step 5...
