I do miss Meph and Imp. Dowan/Duvessa turned into "I'm flying over deep water Duvessa, your berserk is going to run out while I make you run around in circles" after wand spam.

aaaand splatted because Swiftness ran out right when needed it and I forgot I had put down all my scrolls upstairs because of a mottled dragon threat.


Clearly I'm not in the mindset to be playing fragile races that try to branch into bow and whips as well as juggling Necromancy with whatever starting book they have. Screw the Te fixation then, going DrNe.

Edit: Turns out, I'm not in the mindset for DrNe either, splatting on basic things like orc priests and magic dart wands. This new Dr looks promising though:

Maybe I'm being too impatient with rushing towards the pain brand. Being grey really helps out with my impatience, especially since I took the detour to get meph online: I don't breathe my own meph. As I discovered: neither do I breath spore gas, though I still take damage.

Interesting, I didn't know that grey draconians don't have to breath. Does it work against other kinds of clouds? I'm thinking of miasma in particular, also the "calcifying dust" from catoblepas.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! +4, +5 demon whip of pain with sufficient necromancy to make use of it. Used to be a demon whip of reaching but I was hellbent on getting a whip of pain and since a demon whip showed up right when I hit 6*, I had to do it. I had so many large abominations that it was hard to sheperd them - so I sent them to die in the Slime pits, getting me a bit of EXP killing some slime creatures. I should take off those bracers of archery now.

Not tested miasma or calcifying dust - I'll do a quick check on Wizmode later.

Update: Well, that's swamp and snake 1~4 done. Fun fact: Azrael does not spawn flame clouds on the square he's standing on. That was a frantic fight when I realised he had appeared behind me - I fought him (with no rF) while he stood on all my scrolls. Afterwards I encountered Sonja on D:12 and killed Nessos on D:11. That would have been a lot nastier if I met them while I was looking for the Lair (found at D:13). As it happened, I had Agony online and a disintegration wand for these low MR uniques.

Twisted Resurrection really is a throwaway spell like Shroud of Golubria: useful if you get it online while you're levelling, useless once you've outgrown it. Right now, Aboms are useful for hitting with 40 damage: Wiglaf and Nergalle got pulverised by their mighty melee. With Recall online, I'm basically swinging a big ball of writhing flesh piles. It's a bit like being a Beogh priest - it takes ages to grow these perma-allies and they die fast if you don't look after them. Lategame they're a dime a dozen with summon horrible things, but right now monsters don't hit hard enough to kill aboms fast and 40 melee damage is close to stone giant melee damage. Or put another way: about the damage an unbranded 2h MiFi melee would have per swing by this point in the game.

Starting my rampage into Elf:1~2, at XL:16 with only 'somewhat' MR. Because my allies can soak the banish attempts, I'm going to sit back and let them take care of mages. Roxanne got a surprise 'blink closer' in on me but that made my recall that much more effective. I've got 2 Necronomicons lined up in the Orc:4 shops, I just need to get my skill training sorted - can't buy all the skills I want immediately. I just know I'm going to be farming Hell for EXP again but I'm not going into the vestibule until I can bring a competent army: my last Dr died to a +4 scythe of dragon slaying.

Update1: Entered Elf:3 because I needed to get rid of some excess aboms. Killed maybe 7 or so high level elves and then retreated without looking back, especially when a brimstone fiend was summoned. Now to head to D:14+

Update2: Just got a vampiric demon whip. Shifting out of haunt skill plan and into more flails.

Update3: It's a golden dragon corpse. On D:20. What do I do with this rarest of rare corpses? Turn it into a seething mass of undead flesh... damn I feel so guilty to all players who want GDR for whatever reason.

Should be close to when Twisted Resurrection is less efficient compared to animate dead, I'll make the transition after I clear some Vaults. I have no intention of going 2h melee so I'm training up shields at present for a {rC+, rF+} shield. But 5 is enough for now (buckler), I need to get haunt online and then necromutation. Though if I find a 2nd sust.Ab ring, I'm going to go dragon form instead - again with no intention to actually melee, I just want that extra HP and summon horrible things.

Ok yeah, the new concentrated Vaults can throw out concentrated mobs: I ran away from Vaults:4 and won't be going back until I have better spells. Aboms just aren't cutting it anymore, especially when the stairs are typically in extremely crowded situations that make it hard to bring anyone over (and I'm not so strong defensively to stairdance badass melee mobs). I'm heading towards Haunt but the spell hunger from having 'low' Int (I started as aGl so my Int isn't high) and -1 Spellcasting apt (as opposed to +4 on a DE) means I will probably need to aim for perma-lich.

Update1: That feeling of hitting a wall in killing power. I have a cTele ring and a Tele ring so I can ninja about but I really really need Haunt to come online soon (and just wear a sustAb ring while coping with sickness). Simulacrum and vampirism don't mix well, I need to just abandon the vampiric demon whip soon and go back to my pain whip. Actually wait... I serve Kiku so I essentially have unlimited food so long as my piety is stocked up (and demons are an unlimited piety source)... why am I holding back because of spell hunger?

Update2: Nope, that was only a wall because I was uncomfortable with Mennas on D:21 and Mara on D:22. I have boots of running and cTele+Tele pair of rings (evocatoins don't care about silence). Why do I need to be afraid? Running around in D:24 now. Since I don't have RMsl (I should get it), I'm instead throwing my army around to block projectiles for me. Big lumbering zombies/spectres with bad EV soak up all the large rocks and crossbow bolts coming my way.

Update3: Swamp:5 turned out to be the hydra/dragon spam ending. I chopped everything up afterwards (got messy there, even after the torment I called down) and immediatley made a dash for Slime just so the badass meat wouldn't be wasted. Got some kills and I found replacements for the expendable gear that got corroded away. I learnt that Haunt doesn't always give you sickness, it's not uncommon to do 3 casts of it without the illness. Snake:5 was really about epic army clash between the classic Snake:5 doom arena and my cosmopolitan undead army: Haunts from behind (smite targetted summons), simulacra, zombies, spectres and skeletons from the front. I stlil can't believe I have yet to find Animate Skeleton, the third most useful Lv 1 spell (first being Apportation, then Butterfly).

One "Receive Corpses". That's all it took to get:
- a storm dragon
- a stone giant
- a hydra
- a rock troll
- a frost giant

From each corpse, I made 5 copies of them with Simulacrum. I'm basically sitting back, eating a meat ration (staff of channeling spam) while my army is clearing out Elf:3 for me. Maybe I should torment? Nah, no need. Uh oops, I forgot all about Alistair's, that would have meant less casualties on my side. Not like it mattered.

Unless it has been changed in 0.11 with Kiku you have a chance to resist Haunt's sickness, increasing with piety. At max piety you can practically spam it without worrying side-effects!

Finally cleared Vestibule: 1 scroll of silence, 3 haunts and 2 batches of simulacra beat up Geryon. Time to head down to Vaults:4 and maybe Vaults:5. Oh and I got animate skeleton from Elf:3. I'm doing my usual Dis dipping whenever I have surplus badass meat - actually I'd get a lot more badass meat just by asking Kiku when down there but I don't intend to farm there yet. I want my gourmand amulet which I hope to find in Vaults:5.

Update1: That's the Vault:5 welcome party broken through. Alistair's + Scroll of Fear is overkill. The squad of yaktaurs camping the stairs was really annoying but Vault:4 had an EXTREMELY convenient staircase room to stairdance the remaining guards up to: there is only one adjacent space to the staircase and my entire army is camping beyond that. But now that I've broken through, I'm contending with all the badasses down here at XL:23 - might have been XL:24 if I hadn't been drained so much in this game but I don't care. I DO care that I'm somewhat lacking in killing power. Haunt is excellent as an auxiliary summon, but I need a frontline summon (horrible things when I get to it). I'm prioritising Necromutation (and Dragon Form) first though. Hmm, now that I have some great maces showing up, perhaps I should just smash things in myself if it's safe to do so - I'm already at 19 maces.

Oh and Boris said Hi for the 3rd time now.

OMG Alistair's works on giants too and I have Clarity. Since I'm running around with double regen rings and sub.blood on myself, I don't give a damn about the cost of spamming it.

Update2: I picked up a holy great mace off a random ogre on a respawn in D:20. That's my endgame melee weapon sorted. Vault:5 loot was extremely disappointing: there were 2 quadrants with nothing but gold. Well ok, I guess I did have a number of shop items on my mind, including an rMut amulet and a grand grimoire. Can't complain I guess. Necromutation is now down to 7% fail when I'm holding staff of wizardy. Time to go finish D so there's no more use for Animate Dead and Death Channel. Lack of gourmand is a little sad but hardly essential.

Mara dead, holy great mace and 13 yaktaur simulacra mashed him down. Curiously he never cloned himself, he just cloned me (and that meant some 5 abjuration attempts). His attempt to teleport out failed as I socked him.

(Black) draconians get slowed by cold attacks? A deep troll simulacrum just did this on D:27.

Update1: Finished D:27 and uh... when did I get 7800 gold???

Update2: TRJ... you're not supposed to die that fast... all I did was read one torment scroll while you were surorunded by a small army. Did the giant slug simulacra hurt you that much? Oh, flayed ghosts hit for 30 damage.

All praise "show_more = false", practically essential for big army clashes (TRJ's renegades vs infinite haunt). The sole reason I learnt dragon form is to spam sub.blood on myself: i.e. the +60% HP bonus. Of course I should only do this when I don't need to run away and am in no danger of being hit.

Right, Crypt next and then it'll be full on Hell farming.

Update4: I have just discovered the secret buff to Kiku+Necromancy. A while ago in trunk, summons were forbidden to attack when you weren't watching the targets (they could hit just fine). Well, that doesn't apply to undead perma-slaves. I was wondering why I could still kill things off-screen.

Update5: Hi Boris for the 4th time! Crypt:2. I like him, he's a nice source of EXP for 4 dispel undeads.

Crypt:3, wow this DESECRATION. I just found a mini-vault with undead holy creatures. This is very profound because I once lost a necormancer to holy corpses: I killed a shedu and was trying desperately to get rid of its corpse to prevent its mate from resurrecting it. Animate Dead! "Can't be done, it is holy." Corpse Rot! "Can't be done, it is holy."

I met Khufu. Smacked him down then left it to horrible aboms while I retreated (but still in sight). We were in a corridor so it was a chain of strict 1v1 fights. The remaining greater mummy died to Dispel Undead spam because aboms had already reduced it to half health.

Crypt:5, there is a long bridge to a castle in the centre. I jump into the moat and walk to the back door.

It's like crawl knows I'll never have to worry about food ever again if I ever got a gourmand amulet. Well, I now have Necromutation memorised so this no longer matters, I've got my force_more_message telling me to recast it whenever it's about to run out so it's time for some infinite channeling (with dragon form for emergency sub.blood spamming). Lich form also means I can take off these regen rings for double sust.Ab.

Update6: Fully exploring Dis now. Yes that really isn't recommended. While Lich form can heal, when I'm low on HP I go back to life to spam regen. Why I can afford this? Because I have a huge army sitting around me and Hell effects can't summon things when there's no space. It feels unfamiliar and yet SO APPROPRIATE that the greatest danger I face are reapers. Because they will regulalry show up with dragon slaying. I just got hit for ~100 damage. This is why I'm never without an army of some form.

Hell, where remove curse scrolls are essential battle items. I need to do some curse cleansing now, was in trouble as I had no sources of Tele left as I foolishly put 2 cursed rings on, locking out the Tele ring. Persevered through 3 Hell Sentinels once I got them separated ("search & destroy" is what they did, splitting up). This alternate Dis:7 layout (huge city) is awesome.

Have Haste, will have cBlink once I forget dragon form to make space - nice as it is to essentially be a giant mana battery, it's not so useful without super conjurations to take advantage of it. Ok I suppose I could pump a bit more summonings to spam horrible things with it, but EXP is precious right now. Maybe when it's time for Zot. Actually, I should do Zot:1~4 now for the EXP, I have everything necessary (except lots of rF) anyway. Since OoF can't cast fire storm, I have ample time to run away if I ever meet one.

You see that &? That's Dispater. You see that L? That's me. See everything else? That's my army. There is no other enemy in sight. By the way, I already ninja'd the rune then came back to finish Dispater off - I just grabbed the rune to remove -cTele.

Update2: Gloorx Vloq ran away from me. No really, I never encountered him while bulldozing through his level of executioners to get the dark rune. Here in Pan I had a nasty moment when I foolishly sent my whole army against a Hell Sentinel and then got ambushed by a nasty pan lord from behind. I now have deterioration 1 because of contam abuse to live. This is utterly irrelevant as I run around with double sust.Ab anyway to spam horrible things.

I do feel temptation to go learn LCS just to shoot down Hell Sentinels but I'm far stretched as it is. I should just suck it up that my army will diminish greatly whenever a sentinel shows up.

Update3: Unlimited acquirement scrolls from Pan have given me a heal wounds wand and a SInv cap. I'm also at +8/+6 great mace of crushing (because I can't wield holy while a Lich). With no other urgent spells to get (Dig is essential for armies in Pan), I'm powering fighting now. Maybe afterwards I'll learn Borgnjor if there's still things to kill.

Fighting Cerebov (or rather, having my army fight him). NUCLEAR LAUNCH DETECTED! I got double firestormed (still at half health), gonna retreat now.

Cerebov was down to half health too but though I recovered faster, by the time I was done summoning my massive army again, he was pretty much back to full HP too.

Round 2: cBlink up to his face, recall my 30 horrible things for instant surround, spam haste on them. Cerebov managed one Abjuration but half my army remained, which was more than enough to still surround him. He went down fairly quickly with no nuclear storms this time.


Update1: Mnoleg down. He required some repositioning to get a proper surround and his abjuration spam was annoying but there was no real threat on my unlife.

Now I come back to Pan and find this:

Good thing glass stone is impenetrable. I just teleported out and that scary demon force in the middle split up to search for me - i.e. my army had time to replenish numbers. Now I'm in a Zig, I must remember to pick up my temporary stash once I exit here.

DAH, Orange Crystal Statue sat in the middle of the floor and a silent spectre showed up too. Thankfully I had my big mace so I could pound away without spells but that was nasty. I gotta remember to carry around disintegrate (or learn LRD fast). Oh, how that crystal died? A cacodemon shot it from behind.

A good death! Important lessons need a good death to be remembered: Silver stars have ARMAGEDDON LASERS. That BEAM penetrated through my army and hit me for 100+ damage. I hurriedly went back to life but it did not help: heal wounds can't heal fast enough compared to BEAM. If I had Death's Door (or maybe just Borgnjor's) I could have escaped here but alas, I thought a huge army and Necromutation could overcome anything. Well, abjuration spam, fire/ice storm, Hell Sentinels and unlimited hellfire would have posed a threat still but those are threats that I have time to react to. In a Zig corner with 2~3 Silver Stars floating towards me, I would have needed to cTele'd myself to the other side but I'm not sure I could have survived that long - at the very least I would have had to get Tele up as soon as I saw the silver stars.
