Only other significant(?) items in my stash are a +0 bow with a pile of 40 arrows and 15 poisoned arrows. Should I feel the urge to poke at bows, there are several other arrow stacks thoughtfully left lying around by friendly neighborhood centaurs. No, I don't actually carry all that around with me, but it was easier than creating an itemized list of my stash. Oh, there are also a couple troll hides sitting around unused.

Notice that I have yet to encounter a single conjurations spell outside of my starting book. Magic Dart isn't cutting it, to say the least. I picked up the bow thinking it might come in handy, but I got tired of lugging it around and forgetting to use it while it took up 25% of my weight limit, so I dropped it in my stash.

D:10 was home to the Lair entrance (I haven't actually seen Orc yet, which is on the unusual side), along with a welcoming committee of 2 trolls, a couple packen of yaken, an elephant slug, an elephant, and some snail. I was able to clear the area around the entrance through some careful single pulling, lots of Meph, and the judicious (read: friggin stupidly dangerous, given that I had a bow sitting in my stash) application of that draining-branded dagger. I ended up hitting the elephant so many times that it took me from XL10 + 97% to XL11 + 1%. :S D:11 has Fannar and a quite powerful player ghost holding hands and singing Kum Ba Ya camped out at the stairs, and it was all I could do to get back up safely. There are also many trolls, hill giants, etc, scattered around the level; while I can take a single one out with Meph + MD + optional summon, they're a bit too close for me to Meph in comfort.

Since Crawl obviously wanted me to go the Lair, I obligingly went downstairs and said hello to the black mamba slithering over from the edge of my LOS. I tossed up a trio of Ice Beasts, hoping he'd take more cold damage, but he 1- or 2-shot each of them. They *did* manage to slow him long enough for me to reach a different set of stairs and climb up (no sense leaving him waiting at the bottom of my only path down). To my mixed delight, however, a pack of Canine Familiars with 2-3 war dogs seems quite capable of tearing apart anything I've encountered so far (including Gastronok and his +INT hat! Yay!). The only difficulties I've had are descending stairs with a pack of blink frogs and a pack of green rats on opposite sides, and descending another set of stairs on the same level with a pack of yaks and a pack of elephants within LOS. In both cases, the use of stairdancing and stupidly large packs of dogs managed to eventually get me out of danger. I've cleared out down through L:4 using the same "strategy" of "Hit 'o', interrupting it every few seconds to summon more dogs".

The obvious problem with the summons is that I'm advancing in XL much more slowly now. An additional problem is that I can't supplement my pack's damage with Meph, since they're just as susceptible as most monsters are. As I see it, I can either focus Bow, or I can hold out and hope I hit 6* with Vehu soon - I can't remember exactly when I hit 5*, but I think it was sometime in L:1 or L:2 - and start getting Conj books. My Air skill is high enough that Lightning Bolt can take a decent chunk out of anything pre-L:7/8, and I think I could get BoCold/Freezing Cloud up reasonably quickly. Is it worth waiting for god gifts, or should I seek alternate, non-XP-stealing means of converting my enemies into food?

Hmm yeah, you're in that really uncomfortable situation where you're waiting on Vehumet with no bow skill. I prefer not taking Vehumet when I'm a Wz unless I've found my own conj book or trained up bows. Since you are at 5* piety though, best to suck up the loss in EXP a little longer and continue spamming minions. Make sure your summoning skill does not surpass your conjurations skill.

Use Ice Beasts or Imps upfront, they don't care about mephitic cloud. Summon and send in the dogs afterwards. Also consider spamming Imps until you get a Shadow imp that will cast Animate Dead for you - they remain in your control after the imp dissipates.

Oh and I strongly advise you take up Control Teleport right now. Semi-controlled blinks will almost guarantee you never die so long as you're not careless.

Your only summons that you need to worry about hurting with Mephitic Cloud are canines. Your imps and ice beasts will happily march through noxious fumes all day, so use those on things that you can meph, and save the canines for invisible foes.

You're getting close to 6* piety with Vehumet, so your first book gift is coming soon. The book of Conjurations contains Freezing Cloud, which will be enough to carry you all the way to Zot.

Blargh...got through L:8 without any problems, although the obligatory pack of death yaks was annoying, and the pack (flock? herd?) of fire drakes put a bit more hurt on my canine friends than I'd anticipated. Stumbled on an amulet of faith, which would have been handy about 5* ago... Had the Hell ending, which meant I summoned a pack, opened the door, and ran for it, just to see what would happen. Nothing seemed to put any hurt on the hellwings, and an orange demon was running close behind, so I decided to call it a day and head up the stairs.

Cleared out D:11 with Fannar and the nasty player ghost; took out another nasty ghost on D:12 (noticing a theme where I'm dying?) as well as Nessos - fortunately, I'd happened to cast RMsl just before stumbling into him, so it was cake to get around the corner and Meph him. D:13 saw the introduction of centaur warriors who were all too obliging to stand in flame clouds with a little encouragement. At this point, I was managing to pull things solo or duo and kill them myself, rather than let my pack get all that XP. Despite the amulet, I still was stuck at 5* and was getting a bit frustrated with Vehu - what did he want, anyway? That should have been a sign to stop, switch to a new character, anything but keep going. My "pack" of 2 jackals and a hound rounded the corner to see a crocodile and a wand of fire, both 2 steps away. I sent my dogs to the croc and stepped toward the wand, only to see a centaur warrior. I hopped back around the corner to let my pack finish the croc and gnaw on the horse a bit. He came around the corner, sucked in a giant lungful of green gas, and began wandering around. I should have either stabbed him with that Octopus King fish-poker or dragged in more friends to finish him off, but instead I tossed Magic Darts at him. When he got unconfused, I found out he'd picked up the wand of fire. I took two zaps while trying to re-confuse him, but still had 36 HP left. Rather than use one of the several healing or escape methods sitting in my inventory, I tried another meph cloud, ate two more zaps, and died.

Yet another (surprisingly) promising character killed by hubris and frustration - curse you, Vehumet! Curse you, RNG! /grrrrrr
