I have been trying to win with an Octopode for a while now and finally succeeded!
I had many close calls and in particular a REALLY close call in the Orb chamber when I was trapped by 4 Orb Guardians and a few other things with around 20 HP waiting for tele to kick in.
I feel like I had decent luck finding spellbooks. And around D10 I found the Vampiric Exec Axe that I used the whole game. I did waste a bunch of XP on Stealth when I found a Manual, and then used a bunch of XP in the late game getting Summon Horrible Things reliably castable. I probably should have just ignored both of those.
My biggest disappointment was my rings - I was hoping for much better uber-rings by the end of my run, but I had pretty standard stuff for most of the game. This was one of the first games I actually hoped for one of those ring troves, but mine was mostly armor (3 shields) and weapons that I did not need. At least it could have given me a better hat! Oh well.
Most of my other Octopodes went with Okawaru hoping for a wide variety of weapons and hats to choose from so I could use Acquirement on jewelry, but those did not fare as well. I did Ash for this run and really liked having slots freed up by the See Inv and Clarity bonuses. And seeing the red faces behind walls and using scrying helped me to avoid some vaults which would have probably been deadly.
