Innate Abilities, Weirdness & Mutations

The usual story: feel amazingly awesome about your lategame character, save, come back after work when tired and without warming up, make SEVERAL bad decisions in a row that lead to death. That detail I'll go into later, let's start with the history:

D:2 Maklehb altar, "sure why not?" Turned out to be awesome: at dragon form I have FAT HP so I can burn through Maklehb abilities without flinching. I probably should have focussed my skill growth a bit more but it was awesome having my HP, MP and food all be fuel for blasting stuff (Maklehb, conjurations, breath). Once I had blasted away I'd dragon punch whatever was still standing.

This was a tournament character who didn't complete the game before the midnight deadline. I had 3 runes by that point but couldn't win on time. Without ever seeing D:22 I had cleared Spider:5, Vault:8 and Elf:3. All thanks to "I'm chargin mah piety cannon" - there is no reason to stay at 6* piety for Maklehb as you never get any gifts. Ergo, when I've topped up my piety, I go hit some hardcore branch ending. Elf:3 saw me go from 6* to 3* piety. Spider:5 was me not caring about ghost moths because I didn't need mp and my army could see invisible. Mind: I very much did care about the big army of spiders that surrounded me when I first entered the boss room. Then Mennas showed up late to the party and promptly got stomped on by a fat army of demons: sure he was killing them left and right but I stood outside silence radius and kept supplying reinforcements. Once again Mennas: shields are for honourable 1v1 physical duels. This was not an honourable fighter!

The debacle that led to my death was me following my usual philosophy: clear Vestibule before going to D:22. I could have done it, had I not been chaining together so many bad decisions:
1) I saw Hell Hogs. I did not immediately go upstairs to dump my scrolls. As a result, by the time the long battle was nearing its end and I needed to escape, I had no escape scrolls. Every last scroll had burned.
2) I moved away from the exit 'staircase'. I think it was for some stupid reason like "i want to punch that guy there". Then I figured there'd be another exit nearby and I happened to run off in the ONE directoin where there wasn't.
3) Forgetting my original intent was to just kill the other demons hten come back for Geryon later
4) Not charging up my piety cannon again after having spent it in Vault:8. I wanted to swap to Chei soon so felt I should save the rest of D:22+ for Chei piety.
5) Failing to spot the reaper with a +4/+4 scythe of dragon slaying until I was at <50 HP

All in all, I lacked sufficient experience with DrTm: always be prepared for an unexpected dragon slaying weapon aimed at you.
