[CIP!] HOBe - Need Axe advice

Need some insights; L23 HOBe of Trog (Axe 26) in trunk use:

a. Flaming +4/+9 Exec Axe [spd 7 – quite fast] or
b. Randart Speed +7/+6 Battle Axe (rC+, rN+) [spd 4 – extremely fast]

Which is better atm considering cleave?
And if I shud switch to TSO, max piety and turn the Flame to Holy wrath (going for Tomb or alternatively keep Trog and do Cocytus), again which would be better between the then:

c. Holy Wrath Exec Axe +4+/+9 or the speed axe above (b.) and again considering Cleave?

Re: [CIP!] HOBe - Need Axe advice

The flaming axe will out damage the speed axe. I'm not sure about the math on the holy axe against non-demon/undead targets, but I'd probably still use the executioner's axe over the battleaxe, and would only switch to the antimagic axe against dangerous casters.

Re: [CIP!] HOBe - Need Axe advice

Against a non fire-resistance no-AC creature (Given your current skills):
Flaming exec axe: 152.12 dmg/round
Speed battleaxe: 180.44 dmg/round

Against a non-fire-resistant 20 AC creature:
Flaming exec axe: 139.83 dmg/round
Speed battleaxe: 151.44 dmg/round

Against a non-fire-resistant 40 AC creature:
Flaming exec axe: 123.55 dmg/round
Speed battleaxe: 123.30 dmg/round

Assuming you hit every time. If you have another source of attack speed (Haste, Finesse, berserk etc.) the flaming axe will get a large bonus over the speed axe (And will surpass it by a large margin) since the speed axe can't really get any faster. Fire resistance drops the average flaming axe damage by about 20%, fire susceptibility increases it by the same margin. You'll also have a very slightly higher to-hit percentage against higher EV creatures with the battleaxe.

Holy Axe against holy susceptible:
40 ac: 183.39 dmg/round
20 AC: 198.68 dmg/round
0 AC: 212.96 dmg/round

Cleaving really doesn't change the results compared with single defender damage.

Finally, perhaps the biggest determiner, if you are fighting things which you should kill in one or two shots, it's always better to use the larger base-damage weapon (The exec axe) because the speed axe relies on multiple hits which gives your opponents more opportunities to hit you back, presuming you arrange to be the one who attacks first most of the time (Which I assume you do) because a preemptive shot that kills means no retaliation, no matter whether the attack took .3, .4 or .7 rounds.

In short you should only use the speed axe for fights against big critters without really large AC bonus, and only if you can't pump your attack speed, or the critter is fire-resistant, If you want to leave one in your stash, I'd vote for the speed axe.

Speed axe gets faster just fine with haste/finesse. Min attack delay is 0.2, axes won't ever hit that cap unless you have a hand axe of speed with finesse.

Re: [CIP!] HOBe - Need Axe advice

Yep silly me, I was thinking of the minimum weapon delay(3), not the absolute minimum delay after modfiers (2)
I also forgot that speed brand is "(regular delay+1)/2" so I was thinking his natural delay would be 3.5 not 4, that's what I get for not looking, and just spouting from memory :) Yes, haste can take his speed axe from 4 to 2.66 and finesse can take it from 4 to 2, which is quite insane (5 attacks per round, at an average of 60something each??? egad!)

Yeah, I revise my earlier opinion, go with the speed axe, it doesn't have any special cases you need to worry about and will chop the heck out of anything that doesn't have utterly insane AC (Like 2-3 monsters in the game might take more damage from the fire axe, maybe)
