[CIP] HOPr - Looking for a 3 rune win

Hi,

Sotu a Lvl 16 HOPr is one of my best crawl characters ever, and has some good panic buttons of the teleport variety. I have a rune, from the Snake Pit. Wondering if I should dive or go to the Swamp.

I am wielding a K - a +5,+5 eveningstar of protection, I don't know much about endgame-worthy weapons, but I don't figure this is the one. It's pretty effective and has helped me a great deal. I turned off M&F a while ago, in case I really wanted to switch. Should I just grab an ax, since I have so much cross-training?

I've got Fighting and Armor on right now. I have had miserable success with casting spells, I have stashed my books in order to hopefully come back in a few levels.

I converted Nergalle which was great for a long time, but I just lost her and my warlord. So I dipped back down into the mines to grab a big horde.

I'm about to dive again and see what beats me up on the way down toward 20.

On something other than an HOPr - I would be in Orcish Mines right now. So, I'm confused about what to do at this point.

Shield of Reflection (acquirement) and eveningstar of protection came together relatively quickly, and I figured "well, i'll tank and haste my warlords" but my casting is awful! but I had Nergalle who was spamming Haste, and while this is not the HOPr I expected, it sure sounded like a valid 3-rune career path. Now, I have no Nergalle, so I'm not sure where to go with this for skills, weapons or branch order at this point. HELP!

For one-handed Maces & Flails weapons, demon whips are the way to go. You probably won't run into one of those until later.

As an experiment, try putting on an orcish plate armor. The racial bonus is significant for devotees of Beogh.

Thanks! Actually a demon whip has dropped, I just had to run away from the aftermath, but I can go find it. I will experiment with the orcish plate, I figure this guy ends up in CPM if he lives.

I changed my mind and went into the Swamp and got almost all my horde drowned. My horde is more like small business than a religion, and as a typical CEO, since I know I can walk on water, I forgot about the little guy.

Hi there!

In case my avatar didn't give it away, I'm a great fan of Hill Orcs, particularly those loyal to Beogh. As for your situation? Well, it doesn't look too good. This is just my opinion, of course, but here's a rundown:
  • Melee, Armour, Shield, Magic... Hill Orcs simply don't have the aptitudes to effectively support all four. It usually boils down to choosing between magic and armour. I generally start either melee or caster pure, and then pick up either the other avenue or the addition of armour/shields around Lair, as equipment permits. Trying to do all four from the outset will end up underpowered midgame, leading to your orcs carrying you, leaving you like this when they die.
    • If you're supporting a melee build with conjurations or charms, you'd do best in lighter armour until you've got your level 4-6 spells up to par.
    • If you'd really like a shield with your casting, I'd recommend sticking to robes. Dump a few levels in fighting if you're taking too much damage, as those will be useful if you find any randarts with good properties, no matter what type of weapon it is (unless it's 2-handed, but those you can give to your knights/warlords).
    • For a pure melee destroyer build, I'd eschew Shields altogether and go armour, fighting, and one massive weapon of your choice. Training three separate weapon skills just because is a waste of exp- especially since you can give your orcs whatever weapons you aren't proficient with. If you do find a smaller weapon that you find just awesome (like a vampiric orcish broad axe, for instance), then and only then should you pick up shields.
  • Your current equipment? Pretty nice, actually.
    • Your current armour is nice for a randart. Don't think you need to get into casting just because it boosts Int. You'd be climbing steep penalties, and I highly doubt it's worth it. You might be able to pull off level 1-3 spells with effort, but you'll risk miscasting and you simply won't get Haste online. Sadly, you can't really take back the 8 ranks you've spent- but now you know for next time.
    • Shields at 15... someone reads the wiki. My only gripe here is reflection- if you're unlucky, a reflected projectile can bounce and hit an ally, and then you've got an angry ally and an angry Beogh. Not fun.
    • Eveningstar is an interesting and good weapon- high damage, pairs well with a shield. Protection's an alright brand as well, if you like tanking hits for your orcs (which is what you should be doing with this build). Consider, though, in future games, that Beogh grants a decent damage bonus to orcish weapons- it's an average of about 4 more damage per strike, and it can add up with a minimum delay weapon.
    • Clarity's pretty boss for Beogh.
    • The helmet's pretty nice, too. Beogh supports its use (free AC) and it gives the occasional extra damage headbutt. Definitely a keeper unless you find an artifact or need See Invis.
  • Losing Nergalle sucks. I always cringe when she doesn't convert, or gets killed right after. I like stashing her away until I can find some amazing armour for her, but even then, she has 60 health. She's gonna die sometime.
  • If you want any chance of having allies for Zot, start raising Knights. If you're comfortable with it, travel with about 4 orcs/warriors, and 3 priests. Many will die, that's alright. Once you have a knight or high priest, find somewhere to stash them (so they don't steal all the exp) and raise some more. You're on track if you have at least a half-dozen knights and a high priest/sorc by vault, and a half dozen warlords along with a dozen knights by Zot (and maybe some casters, if you got them gold dragon armour or such)
  • Equip your orcs! Ctrl-t and let them grab anything, unless you're looting a branch end. If you have spare good dragon hides, it may be worth it to enchant them for your buddies. They'll tend toward large weapons; if they grab a good polearm, they'll be far more survivable. Almost any ranged weapon is nice, too, but sometimes they get cursed launchers- thankfully, Orc Knights can still beat hydrae to death wielding a blowgun.
  • Also, if you ever do have a casting orc, go for one of the dragon armours instead of orcish. They almost always outclass the bonus Beogh gives. Same goes for Gold dragon armour vs orcish platemail- if you can, go for it.
  • Beogh can boost the defense of your allies' armour. If you have a good knight with an ego armour that's been repeatedly boosted, grab it off him when he dies! Thanks, Beogh!
  • I know you just learned this, but... Orcs don't fare well on watery or heavily poisonous branches. For Snake, I usually just take 1 high priest in poison resistant armour to summon demon backup. Swamp's easy enough without it, and you don't want important orcs to stumble into water and drown. Go when you can do it with little or no support- you can bring a few knights later if you find a unique you need to kill, but adventuring through with them is just too risky. If you're not strong enough, travel with a squad through the dungeons and vault to level up.

...And that's enough from me. The long story short is: You've got good equips, your skills are a bit wasteful/unoptimized, and get used to fighting alongside your common man, because otherwise you'll end up hopelessly outclassed if you aren't already.

Edit: Also, why haven't you gone down to Orc:4 yet? There's free orcs to recruit, and almost certainly some useful items in the shops. And it's laughably easy when half of your enemies have a chance to join you...

Thanks for the great advice. I don't usually use shields but I knew the eveningstar would be a competitive choice to the best weapon available for a long time.
I guess I will give up on a casting orc priest. The concept you talked about that I really haven't done well is to stash important followers.

This turned into a YASD. I couldn't keep my followers alive and the need for me to be out front and dealing damage became greater and greater. My mistake then was not taking off the shield and moving to a great mace or a nice dire flail I found.

I won't worry about a heavy armour caster HOPr anymore.

I'm glad I can help, and sorry for your loss. The important things about a Beogh game are to benefit from, but not rely on, your followers, and maintain your skills to be able to face many challenges solo. If you make too many bad investments with your skills, you end up relying on your companions, and falling behind in a negative feedback loop.

I generally only travel with more than 2 knights at a time once I've gotten down to the Vaults, and I only really break out the warlords for the end Vault and lower dungeon. They're too risky to use on swamp, shoals, and Elf, since if they get confused/drowned or banished, their equipment is lost.

If you want to do something similar to a heavy caster HOPr, try starting HOEE and working toward a high Earth Magic. I'm doing this in my current playthrough- until Lair, I had eschewed armour and weapons completely (I have a flaming orcish trident, looking for something better, but currently no weapon skill and 8 in fighting). I mostly relied on stone arrow early on (staves/rings of magical power are a great boon), moving to LRD for crowds/edge-of-sight monsters and petrify and stoneskin for particularly tough threats. Then I got a book with Statue form and Iron shot, shortly after finding and switching to Beogh, and now I can easily tank for my armies with my super-nice AC and damage reduction.

I had some luck in finding a ring of +4 int, but with that boost and wearing a robe and buckler (5 shields is a really cheap investment, and useful for Statue form tanking), I only needed 16 Earth Magic, 12 Spellcasting (admittedly a pain, but the reduction in spell hunger and extra mp was worth it), and around 8 Transmutation to get statue up and running without wizardry.

I'd suggest limiting Trans to 4 until you find a book with Statue Form (It's still useful for Petrify, Passwall, and Stoneskin, but it's -3 so it's way slower than training up earth until you hit high skill levels), and focusing on Earth First and foremost, since it's used to determine your AC bonus with Statue Form and Stoneskin, and it helps cast everything important in this build. If you can't find a good weapon, leave the skill off for later; if you find an awesome weapon early, consider stalling your casting progress at excellent for Petrify and below, and focusing on melee with some Earth support (you can always pick up more skill levels later, once you're dealing an acceptable melee damage). If you can't find Beogh, Vehemut, TSO, or Oka all work decently well with this build. Yred would be nice, if only statue form didn't offend him...

No worries, this forum lacks Hill Orc content, they are such a great species and require interesting skill choices. Some badass around here posted one time about how HOBe was better than MiBe because of the lower experience multiple, and that is so true, my top 10 high scores quickly filled up with HOBe.
