Yet another couple of stupid death (including nice naga with 3 runes killed by teleportisis with low health), and now I'm going into another tipycal character.

I'm in the D:14, and need an idea on what to do next. Here is the dump:

The idea is to train shields up to 15, and maybe some dodging&fighting before leveling up slings again.

The questions so far are:

- where should I go? Nothing like poison resistance for Lair so far. Maybe Orc for now, and hoping for some ring of rPoison.
- what should I do with weapon and ammunution? 150 stones and normal sling bullets vanishes with a lightening speed by last two floors. Should I found some sort of melee weapon and stick with it whaiting some more ammunition supply from Oka? +4 Steel bullets could works fine, but I have only 40 and think it could be better to save them until I have about 100, and then enchant it for some levels. Never have hunters, and don't really know what to do with ammo.
- also, should I use enchant scrolls on weapon, or save it for ammo so I have more reliable stock?
- what kind of sling is better - should I enchant one from my arsenal or should I wait for good artifact gift?

Halfing need 21 in shields to eliminate normal shields penalties, a huge investment of exp which isn't worth at all. Disable shield, stick with a buckler (of resistance, if you can find it) and be happy.
Rpois isn't necessary for Lair (heck, even Swamp and Snakes can be done without it!). Start to hit all threating poisoning enemies (black mambas, spiny frogs, ...) with your sling as soon as they appear, always keep at least 1 pot of curing in your inventory and you will be fine. Orcs can be a lot more dangerous (OoD like Stone Giant, Rock Troll, Saint Roka may spawn here) - especially Orc:4 is the graveyard of a lot of character who could easily clear Lair:1-7.

About ammo management: if you play well with Oka, keeping your faith up (aka, you don't spend too much time resting, or wandering around), you'll soon have more ammo you'll ever need. Spam heroism in every non-banal fight, it's really cheap and really good. If you find an amulet of faith early on, it's the best you can wear while worshiping Oka.
Probably you won't get many steel bullets, depending on your luck you'll probably need to enchant normal ammo (which is great too) - when using slings, I usually shot the "bad"-branded ammo first (poison, exploding, ...) to save the normal and good branded one (silver, steel) until I get a good amount to enchant (I'd say 100-200 bullets is a good amount to enchant for a 3 rune game). Btw, +4 steel bullets have a reasonably low mulch rate, they should last quite long.
Ah, the better ranged brand is vorpal: as soon as you find a scroll of vorpalize weapon, create your sling of velocity and enchant that (use EW1 on bullets, EW2/3 on the sling). Don't bother to enchant slings of flame of frost.

A hahu can win using only sling, but if you fear to run out of ammo or you want to add a bit of differentiation, you may train short blades, hoping Oka will gift a decent weapon. You can use during non-hard fights, and your sling against strong opponents. You should train stealth too, it's very cheap for an Ha and helps a lot in a lot of different ways - to place better in combat, to avoid nasty opponents, to flee from combat and so on. If you want, you can train stabbing a bit too, it's quite easy for Ha to became good stabbers.

edit: if you have found books with good spells (blink, swiftness, repel missiles, haste, ...) it's a good time to start to train some magic schools too.
Id that wand and that ring, it's a very bad thing to have potentially really important items unidentified.

No good books, and I miss my scroll of vorpalise - read unidentified. It comes a bit easier with projectiles since Orc - really piety-builder, and then an amulet of faith helps a bit.
Now have Orc:4 (Aizul-guarded), Swamp:5 (Saint Roka and Co), and now on Snake 2.

As a main weapon - gifted +2,+10, +Inv, Dex+2, Stlth--. Pretty good along with +5,+7 ring of slaying (really love this thing). Also use Str+3 Int+2 ring instead of the ring of Octopus King cause couldn't carry all that weight even after dropping pretty everithyng except ammo and vital things.

Hope for another vorpal scroll, and clearing Snake, see ya (=

Oh, and I'm still with shield training since take one of reflection from Donald. Maybe it not worth the XP, but I think it better than tons of Fighting.

Reflection is a very bad brand, almost useless: initially, you need to block a bolt, then to reflect it, and finally hit something, which happens very rarely. As I said, a buckler of resistance (or even only rf+) is ten million better.
The main weapon could be very good, but we should know the base type and the brand. In the case is actually good, you may train evoc until invisibility is reliably castable (and stab things in that way).
A +str is always useless; if you really need to carry more things, raise str on level up (which is quite a waste too).
What kind of Octopus Ring do you have? They can have 8 different properties, if yours have regen, rf+ or even rc+, throw away that +str ring even more quickly and wear that.

I don't know why you have explored Swamp:5: branches' ends are always far more dangerous than levels before. You should always explore other places (Dungeon, Orcs, Vault:1-7, eventually elf:1-4 and crypt:1-4) before entering Lair branches' end

Finally, powerful enemies/uniques should remember that in DCSS not everything need to be killed. Unless it's really necessary (e.g. Saint Roka really next to the rune and you haven't apportation), there isn't a real reason or big reward to risk your character life against them.

Has the Str bonus for ranged weapons been adjusted lately? If memory serves, str bonus for ranged weapons had a very erratic bonus, but I was under the impression that Str was actually quite good raising for the sake of Launchers alone. MIght have missed any changes though.

Pretty much useless for slings. Reasonably important for bows. Very important for xbows.
