YAVP: VpEn of Makhleb
My first win!!
This was something like the 30th VpEn I've tried, and probably the first not die before having seen the Vaults staircase.
I think the key to his success was finding "the +3,+3 katana of Wrath {freeze, Int+1}" in the Hive and pretty much all the enchantment books I needed in an early labyrinth. After that I started playing it more like an enchanter/crusader hybrid, stabbing whatever was asleep and killing everything else with haste + katana (later, haste + vampiric triple sword), not bothering too much with kiting things for hours trying to get confusion to work.
After Swamp:5 (ridiculously easy), Shoals:5 (ridiculously hard) and Vaults:8 (just about right) I decided to go for the Slime pit for some reason (mostly for the loot). Much to my surprise it went extremely smooth, only costing me a +1 on my gloves of dexterity, but also not providing anything useful besides a Book of Necromancy.
Just before diving to Zot: 5 I briefly tought about doing the Tomb as well. The only reason I didn't was that I had already used my enormous (seriously, something like 30-35 between the three types) stacks of scrolls of enchant weapon and so I had none left in case I found the katana of speed I had been looking for the whole time.
Gong into Zot:5 I was worried about means of healing as I hadn't found a wand of healing the whole game, and potions weren't much use because by then I had drained just about any blood vessel in the dungeon, so I could only count on Makhleb's power and my trusty vampiric triple sword which I think only works on dragons and draconians of all mosters found there. Still, Zot: 5 was frankly almost a walk in the park; I guess it helped to have maxed out resistances for just about anything. I practically never had to fight more than 1 thing at a time (I once had 3 orbs of fire in my LOS, but luckily they were all coming for the same direction so I could retreat). I ended up killing 3 ancient liches and 9 (nine!!! wtf) orbs of fire without any trouble save for a lot of rotting from the orbs.
Having seen screenshots with legions of demons lead by Pan lords, I was a bit worried about the orb run, but all that cared to show up were a couple of green deaths and one smoke demon or something. Anticlimactic
