CIP - SpEn midgame decisions

I am running into problems with killing things around early Vaults. I hex and stab most obstacles, but some are proving to be too much. What skills should I train to get through the tougher encounters? Also, I have access to potentially better weapons - a dagger of distortion and a quickblade. I just do not know if the former is safe against powerful ranged enemies, and if the latter permits effective stabbing. Any feedback is appreciated.

The dagger of distortion is extremely useful. I'd say it's one of the best weapons you could hope for on SpEn; it does high damage for a short blade, gets stuff you can't kill out of the way, and gets stuff you can't kill in this particular situation because you need to get past that monster quickly to grab that rune/the Orb out of the way also. It's the perfect weapon for a ninja-type character and SpEn is pretty much the embodiment of that.
Most ranged stuff is stabbable anyway, or so strong that the other weapons are riskier to use against them because they deal so much damage in melee too (primarily thinking of dangerous spellcasters here). Also you have rMsl.

Don't know much about stabbing but a +4 dagger of protection seems way too weak for the point you're at in the game. Try to find something with a good multiplicative brand for stabbing. Oh and your branch order looks kinda shonky to me, clear the beginning of swamp before you even look at vault imo.

That weapon is perfectly fine for stabbing, it will oneshot basically anything. It's when you stop stabbing that it is insufficient. It would do, you don't need to fight anyone you can't stab as SpEn, but I think the distortion weapon is even better. And doing Vaults is fine too, though this doesn't matter much since a SpEn who can levitate or fly can do Swamp with ease as well.

I usually pick up earth magic in the late game with my SpEns of Ashenzari. Iron Shot/LRD can take out many things stabbing won't, and passwall is amazing at setting up stabs, especially with Ashenzari. Shatter can help with ninjaing stuff, or with killing - and unlike a Storm you only need one school at -1.
