[YASD] HOPr of Beogh, and questions

Gentlemen,

I am proud to present you HOPr 01 the Bludgeoner. XL16, explored down to D:19 thus by far my best character from the first time I played Crawl (and that's close to ten month ago...).

He has been pretty lucky until now. The +5,0 Great Mace of Protection and heavy armours (plate, then crystal) allowed him to dive his way to Lair (explored), Orcs (explored) and D:17 without noticeable problems. During the course, he collected several artifacts (jewellery, weapons), some of them presently equipped. rF++ has proved pretty useful several times (Nessos and some other fiery guys did not have a chance to even scratch the AC30+/rF++ thing), while rN+/life protection has been underestimated by myself until my priest began to encounter packs of Vampire Mosquitos. He lost many XPs against those plagues (I's say more than a full XL15->16 level...). Invisibility also saved his ass a couple of times, so I guess i'll stick to those protections/tactics some more time.

As for the weapons, he began with Axes and leveled the skill up to 9 when he found the Executionner Axe. From then, he switches from the Great Mace of Protection to the Axe, depending of what is needed in combat : real extra heavy AC or slicing power.

Now, things are becoming more complicated. My priest almost died to Snort, then to a Titanic Slime who, for some reason, prosecuted him in D:17 without any obvious reason (btw slimes appear to be pretty irrational beings...). Then he almost died to Vault Guards, his orcish followers gave their lives for him here and somehow managed to save the situation. And now, Mara comes in view. At the first glance, I'd say he's not very friendly and has a tendency to spawn, which looks bad news for a shy guy like my priest.

If some of you, gentlemen, have some advice to give me here, I'll be very grateful to collect any piece of wisdom and behavioural creativity. So : what would you do here if you were me ? How do you fight Mara ? Also, what policy would you follow about the next levels to explore or the next skills to work on ? Of course, any comments on the build or anything else are also welcome, since I'm far from being an experienced player and I've a lot more to learn before reaching the Hall of Fame.

First of all this character is in need of some strategic advice. To increase your chances of winning I would turn off everything but Axes 26 (this is when the executioner's axe hits minimal delay; it is a better weapon than the mace in every non-running-away or running-towards situation).
In regards to your current situation: what I would do is
1) Go to stairs, walk down
2) Analyse the situation. Have you landed in an easy part of the level? If yes, stay and clear it, if no, walk back up and proceed to step 3)
(3) Now that you are back up and next to Mara, teleport)

All the XP on Axes, so ? Sounds good, although it raises another question in my mind : I've noticed in the logs that once in a while, the armour impedes the delivery of a blow. What is the skill level required to cancel that penalty ?

As for Mara, your advice is then : flee ! Am I right ? Running is not enough and teleport is mandatory, after you ? I'm asking because I've had some unfortunate experiments with teleport scrolls dropping me on the bad side of a level, so if I can run and leave my 3 followers to delay Mara(s), I would feel more comfortable with this option.

As a side question : at what level could I consider Mara as a possible (I mean : winnable) opponent ? Is he deadly in close combat or is he mainly relying on his magic ?

Well he is speed 10 and blinks, so usually I would be comfortable with just running away and there is a decent chance that you will manage it, but on the other hand, you also have the slow movement mutation... ?teleport is far from mandatory (see my comment on the staircase) but in my opinion the best option if the staircase proves to be bad.
Mara is not very strong by himself. However, he makes two copies of himself and a copy of you. This is rather dangerous* for all characters, and without might and speed or a very high level / good weapon I'd flee. In addition I would never fight him without a teleport option.

*Some people say that one should wield a bread ration so the copy has no melee damage. I think that, instead of waiting for multiple turns, you could hit him. This will, in my experience, result in less damage being dealt to you on average.

What is the skill level required to cancel that penalty ?


It is impossible to cancel armour penalties; the Armour skill reduces them, and more importantly increases your AC. However, weapon skill does a lot more for damage output until your weapon is as fast as it will go.

Yep, I've just notices that 'slow' mutation. It's a recent one, I don't know where it comes from. Maybe those ugly things with mutagenic radiations I've encountered on the last level. I guess it's time to find some potion of cmut.

As I said, I've notices that Teleport Scrolls do not like me at all : either they send me the wrong way, or they trigger too late. :P

Just for fun, a resume of what went on : my priest reached the D:20 with his followers. Some easy encounters led the team to a room filles with slimes. Of course, the said things immediately began to merge into 2 titanic slimes. I fled and managed to reach the stairs, one titanic slime slapping me. Upstairs with 13HP left (with my friend the slime), I found myself surrounded by Mara and my ghost. I used my teleport scroll and landed near Kirke and a swarm of Vampire Mosquitos (and some other monsters of course). While retreating it appeared that I was trapped in a deadend. The Magic Map scroll shows that the stairs up are behind Kirke. I may try to dig and reach the other corridor but Mara will wait for me here. I don't have more teleport scrolls, nor heal wounds, curing or speed. I guess this thread will soon end a a YASD :mrgreen:

RIP. Despite drinking potions, using the Box of Beasts (rather weak item at this stage of the game) etc, HOPr 01 has been overwhelmed to death.

So shall perish the fools who do not wear all their Teleport scrolls in their equipment (yeah, I have a few more of them saved in my stash on Lair:1 :roll: ).

Well, maybe I should have tried that on the wall right to me, despite the fact that Mara was nearby in that corridor. Instead, i tried to reach the left wall , hoping to dig something allowing me to reach the stairs. But I ended short of time. Other option : I did not choose the good order for actions or whatever.

Anyway, I now have a pretty scarry ghost waiting for my next adventurer in D:19 :oops:

BTW, the 'slow' mutation is the thing who ultimately killed me this time. I should have noticed it earlier. My bad.
