After over twenty attempts in a row, roughly following the guide on CrawlWiki, I finally won as a MfTm. It took considerable luck - boots of running, few early OOD threats, but it turned out reasonably well despite some trouble with resistance itemization. I almost splatted in Zot when teleporting from a golem and a black drac without rElec into a lung with three! orbs of fire, multiple orb guardians, and yet more draconians. I was very fortunate to be wearing dragon armour, as any less rF or GDR would have left a very promising ghost on Zot:5. I retreated to make the guardians block off the others' line of fire, read another TP scroll, guzzled heal wounds, and was ported near the safe stairs. Later, the orbs were kind enough to meet me one at a time. Ascension presented no problems.
I thought I'd try for a streak and rolled up a berserker next. I don't enjoy Trog as much anymore, as at least half of my ascensions took place under his angry wing, but I figured a HaBe would have a fair life expectancy. The RNG obliged: early boots of running yet again, an antimagic quickblade with +13 damage, a solid ring of slaying... I did not even feel compelled to transition to long blades with this kit. I ended up ditching the boots of running for a +str randart to be able to wear GDA without penalties. There were a few tense moments - I had neglected to identify my second wand of digging and ran out of charges just as a pan lord appeared right beside me - but the halfling was just too durable.
Thoughts:
-Okawaru is ludicrous when utilized properly. I could take all my nonmagical skills to 22 and use the oodles of spare experience to shore up all sorts of supplementary spellcasting. Heroism can be used against anything remotely threatening without even feeling the piety hit. (As a newbie, I had been very stingy with Oka's actives in the interest of expediting those delicious gifts. Silly me).
-It is much better to burn off all those potions of agility and might early than to risk expending multiple Heal Wounds or scrolls of blinking. It is even better to run away.
-It is sweet and proper to expend scrolls of enchant armour early in the game. Early survival is a necessary condition for late survival. Same goes for weapons.
-Boots of running are imbalanced. I should have stuck with them and settled for FDA (or plate of fire resistance) on the second run until both Elf and V:8 were ransacked for supplementary resistance items.
