Just when I told myself to stop trying to build 15 rune trolls I happen across two excellent unrands in one game, the alchemist hat (still my favorite unrand, even though there are better) and the pretty awesome shield of resistance. I somewhat wish the shield was a large shield, but maybe saving the experience with only shield 9 will help. I did finally cave in and start raising some spellcasting to get controlled blink. I still feel really conflicted about trying to get spells online on a troll, though. I'd want statue form for extended but it's just hell getting it going.

I have a fairly unusual branch order going...I ran into an ice storming ghost on V:8 who nearly killed me twice, but a step from time and stair dancing got me away in each case. I only had rC+ since I was set up for rN+++, and then switched to rC++, but at the time I did not have any way to get rC+++. I can now, with the second rC+ ring. It's tempting to go back and get the loot/rune since I have no rMut, but I don't know. I got the third rune via slime pit, which is why my previously +2 cloak of preservation is now at -4. I probably should have looked for another cloak of preservation before going, there are about 3-4 blue cloaks I haven't tried yet. I'll try them now once I can pick the character up again. There were no rCorr amulets, so the cloak was my only choice. There were quite a few scary situations in Slime, particularly fighting TRJ, which were too close for comfort.

Had a lot of fun in the "silent prison" vault, which has a ton of spellcasters surrounded by a silent specter. I considered the free exp payback for having to train traps and doors at -4 along with all my spell schools

I think I'll probably still stick to a low rune victory, rather than going for 15. Elf next, then possibly vault:8, I could do crypt but I'm a troll, and then zot, win. I was planning on skipping elf due to troll's low MR, but this game has been practically throwing MR at me to the point I don't even need an MR ring for elf anymore.

This is a reminder to myself: learn portal projectile ye fool!

To answer pinksniper: decent defenses (trolls never have great defenses) + regeneration makes a character pretty fault tolerant. Plus, I know when to leave immediately, and when I can take a few turns leaving, saving my get out in one turn abilities for later..so it can seem like I'm taking it easy but it's usually carefully considered, at least as carefully as I can muster

Rest of the run was fairly uneventful...took forever to finally find another preservation cloak, but I did. I had to acquire jewelery 3 times to find an rMut amulet...I later on found an rMut rF- amulet on the ground which would have been just as good since I had rF++++ at all times

The resists were just insane, but I don't have the time to do a 15 rune game atm, with diablo 3 I probably won't play much until the next tournament.

Trolls of chei are definitely weaker than nagas of chei, and I considered this character to be a challenge character compared to chei nagas. I am sure there are more challenge combos then troll*monk*chei, but it's certainly not one I'd recommend to anyone looking for an easier game. Still, nice to have something to compare to, and another win.

There simply isn't enough experience in a 3 rune game to get a wide selection of spells...I would have loved to have more but the aptitudes are terrible. What spells would you have learned?

As I have said many times if I am going chei it is going to be on a character who already (by temple!) has a spellbook that cares about spellpower. Pretty much this means conjurations of some sort. There is more than enough xp in a 3 rune game to get conjurations quite usable: my TrCj had quite a nice selection of spells and had good UC as well (morgue here http://crawl.akrasiac.org/rawdata/crate ... 205817.txt ).

It looks like I only needed about 11/11 ice magic/conj to get refrigeration and bolt of cold castable, and then chei int and my staff of cold got the spellpower to pretty good levels. (It also helps when your background starts with decent int instead of being a monk.)

Your troll to me looks like it should have been with makhleb or okawaru or something instead of chei, and learned haste instead of cblink.

After my current game I will probably try a NaFE ... I am not necessarily saying that trolls of chei are better than na of chei since I haven't played a na of chei in a while, though I do think tr of chei is better than your experience indicates which is what I meant with my comment above.

This may surprise some people but I agree with this statement 100%

I mainly took troll of chei just because people suggested trying a different race of chei for comparison, and minotaurs are boring. I probably won't play much chei in the future, except for scoring points in the .11 tournament.

Fair enough. I tend to focus more on the melee aspect of trolls, and then look primarily for utility spells to boost them. Ironically I did use freezing cloud a fair amount via the rod of ice, but it wasn't really that powerful as I never diverted any experience into evocations. What do you primarily bolt of cold/freezing cloud that couldn't be handled by 25 UC and claws? It just seems redundant to me. If I need a ranged option, large rocks do incredible damage, and you only need 4-6 throwing. Bolt of cold can pierce targets, but I just feel like large rocks are a better solution.

I told myself I'd take a break for a while but being bored in the library today I've already started up a merfolk with the invention of going ashenzari. We'll see if I commit enough time to getting a win, but I'll definitely cast more on a merfolk since they have great aptitudes in at least some of the spell schools, including in haste.

It's not like I had 25 UC the whole game! And even with 25 UC, bolt of cold does more damage per aut than melee does.

Also the big money spell was refrigeration, which is basically slouch except it doesnt cost a million chei piety (think about what you can do with infinite slouch). And freezing cloud is very very good for groups ... it actually doesn't care much about spellpower (it just affects duration) though.
