CIP (DCSS 0.5.2): DEFE in need of endgame advice

Hi!

A long-time dungeon crawler here.. I was off this game for a while and just started a new character in order to finally get to see areas like Pan or Tomb. And finally I'm quite close to that. I didn't update the game though, that's why I'm still on 0.5.2.

So, long story short: now I have a fire-storm-casting DEFE, and areas still left unthouched are: slime, the hells (including the vestibule), Tomb, Pan, Abyss, Zot. I think slime would be the typical next target, but my main problem currently is the total lack of "resist mutation". And there has also been only one potion of cure mutation, which I had to quaff because I had cought teleportitis. So what should I do now? My main offence spells currently are bolt of fire, fire storm and iron bolt.

I'm currently trying to train necromancy in order to be able to use the necromutation spell, which (I believe) would make me temporarily immune to mutations. Problems are: 1) I still have only 7 in necromancy and 2) I haven't yet found the spell :(. Oh, and I haven't found a weapon of distortion either, so I can banish myself into Abyss, which surely is a problem with Pan (and perhaps the hells too).

Perhaps I could do Zot, but please refresh my memory: do the portals close when I enter Zot:1 or was it Zot:5 or when I pick up the Orb? I wouldn't want that, since I already have a couple of wins and now I just want to see Pan and Tomb (and hopefully come back alive, too)

So, any ideas on how to proceed? I think my best bet is to next clear the vestibule of hell and Zot if I can do that without closing the portals.

Portals close when you get the Orb, so go ahead into Zot for experience. Stay out of Zot:5 though -- orbs of fire can mutate you. (Not their worst attack, but if Slime scares you because of the mutation potential, this wouldn't be any better.)

The Vestibule is fine as well, and you could probably manage Dis and Gehenna. You don't need to banish yourself to get out of the Hells, so not having distortion isn't a problem.

The only mutation resistance you need for Slime is Fire Storm.

To prepare for Tomb, victory dance up some summoning skill for Abjuration. 5 is adequate, 8 to 10 is great. Whenever you see anything that can move, Haste immediately. If it summons, cast Abjuration. If it doesn't summon, spam Iron Shot. If anything worse than a guardian mummy joins the fight, run away while Hasted while it's still on the edge of the screen. Quaff potions to correct stat drain and minimize rotting, and collect your loot. Try not to Fire Storm, though; too noisy.

To prepare for Pan, dig through your stash to see if you can find a ring of teleport control. Graft that sucker onto your finger; you'll never want to take it off ever again. The spell will suffice if a ring didn't spawn, but it isn't as good because you actually have to think about your actions in advance. Anyway, victory dance up some translocations and just Blink away from anything that looks dangerous. Which won't be much, because Fire Storm. You don't really need more than one pip of fire and cold resistance, and a swappable source of electricity resistance. Don't bother killing the named Pan Lords, just Blink past and grab their Runes. Killing them is a waste of time and effort, since you don't actually get anything for it, and if you waste too much time fooling with them the damage will stack up eventually.

Hell will be annoying unless you grind up some means of recovering mp faster, like Sublimation of Blood. Monsters like to spawn around you in order to pester you, usually interrupting any attempts to rest. Run through the first several floors of each branch as quickly as possible, and run past the named Hell Lords on the last level without bothering to fight them. You just want the Rune, and it's faster if you don't bother fighting them. You probably want a couple pips of fire resistance for Gehenna and a couple pips of cold resistance for Cocytus, but nothing else matters much.

Thank you for your advice!

I'll try the vestibule and Zot 1-4 next. And I'll stop trying to get necromutation, I somehow didn't notice that it's in an impossible-to-get spellbook. Mutations are not the most dangerous thing in the game but I think they are probably the most annoying - if I'm unlucky and manage to get teleportitis or auto-berserk that will make the rest of the game a lot more nerve-wrecking. I do have a teleport control ring and I've used it a lot too. I tend to carry a lot of jewelry and choose the right rings for the level I'm on. I haven't found a robe of resistance, so the armour I have on is the one I'll be using until I find it. Using a ring of fire without compensating for the rC- is asking for trouble :).

I'll see if this character will reach Pan and Tomb.
