Machi, utilizing my FeWz --> FeSu build, has become my first Crawl Win! my first character to enter Zot, my first character to complete a treasure trove. I ran her as a quick prep for the completion of Mewtalisk's run (from my youtube video series"Cat of Nine Tales"). Well - turns out something must have been clicking right, because instead of a quick practice play, Machi actually went on to WIN!!!!

Along the way, I experienced the single most unfair death I've ever had in crawl. Bottom of the Crypt, I find a secret door. I've got about 8 summoned abominations around me, swiftness, defelct missiles, and haste active. I open the door....to reveal a narrow hallway and another door. Heading down, I put my buffs on again and open the next door. . . and die. Iron shot from a Lich (ancient?) 1-shots me. There was no earthly way I could have protected myself against it better than I did. It dealt 67+ points of damage, which was a one-shot kill. The only saving grace is that I was playing a felid -- even with my Fighting:8 (at the time), my max HP is significantly less than even a spriggan. So a race that didn't have the luxury of an extra life or two would have had the hp to tank the shot, IMO. But yeah - most unfair death I've experienced thusfar. .... Hooray for winning anyway!

For my part, I feeel as though I played optimally, took every precaution I could, and was killed without any chance to react. That seems unfair to me. If it weren't for the fact that I had an extra life I'd have been EXTREMELY pissed off. If you go from 100% hp to 0%hp in one turn, there should seriously be some insurance. It's one thing to blunder into a tough situation under-prepared. It's quite another to be one-shotted despite adequate preparation just because your enemy got lucky with an iron-shot.

You went into Crypt 5, which is dangerous and not necessary to win the game at all, with max hp lower than some of the monsters in crypt 5 are capable of dealing (at range!). This isn't really "optimal play," I guess.

Of course, part of the problem is that there are areas that are mandatory to do with monsters who hit as hard (e.g. Zot 5 has ancient liches.) So the problem is really just that felids are terrible.

you could also prioritize fighting skill to compensate, but in general, yes low hp races are much more challenging than normal to high hp races. I love spriggan speed, but I find myself really unable to play them due to their hp...I just like beefy races A first win with a felid is really impressive, though...You should probably be able to follow it up with another win with a more healthy caster race soon

I did more than just enter Crypt:5 -- I massacred it. To be honest, at that point in my play nothing short of Ancient Lich's and Orbs of Fire were proving serious threats. I can only assume that I'd have suffered a horrible death against that one unique angel guy too (Mennas?), but otherwise I was in ridiculously solid shape. That said, I did open a secret door with no way to put an allied summon between me and my attacker, and I concede that that got me killed.

@tasonir: I believe my fighting was up to 8 already at that point - pumping it up to 10 at that point might have made sense - but not really. And the decision to max out Spellcasting and Summoning had paid off *really* handsomely! I was able to get my INT as low as 6, and still reliably cast "Summon Horrible Things" (Lv8 summon). .
Keep trying with the Spriggan, btw! They were my first love for crawl-races. I only stopped playing them when their constant food-battles (towards the late midgame, mind you) became truly irritating to me. Felids offer similar speed (slightly less), and inbuilt carnivore status; along with some superior aptitudes for skills.

@MyOneTheHedgeFox: Thanks! I really appreciate it. If I could just stop doing stupid things like not noticing the alligator that got into melee range with me, I'm hopeful I can get a win too. I've been dinking around with MuWz--> Su and VpWz --> Su comboes lately. The vampire in particular seems to have a *very* reliable early game (unlike the Mummy who can easily be screwed by 2 Magic-Dart miscasts and an unlucky hobgoblin/jackal-pack placement on D:1-2. Of course, at this point I should probably upgrade to 0.10 and start figuring out an Octopode too .

This post puts *so much* in perspective for me, that you really have no idea. Thank you very much! I feel a whole lot better about my endgame approach now -- if you see an enemy on the screen, blink/haste/run away, your summons aren't doing enough damage to it.
