YAVP: There's a first time for everything: MiFi 3-rune win

I'm sure I'm one of the worst players of this game: I've played over 3000 times (mostly offline) and never even made it to Zot before. But I just won my first ever game and feel very quietly pleased with myself.

For anyone who's still going for their first win: I played SpEns for a long time, and got a few runes with them, but I found winning relatively straightforward with a very different approach, a no-spells MiFi of Oka. Oka was, in the end, pretty good to me: three crystal plates over the course of the game, some boots of running, some decent gloves. And a pile of other crap, obviously, especially in terms of weapons, but the boots were very useful.

I was slightly underwhelmed by the orb run: I thought I was going to be overwhelmed by nasties but in the end there was just one ancient lich and one Pan lord: they appeared together but I just ran, and I didn't see anything else but minor demons. I think I got lucky...

NIce rings! Also, many many many congrats for your first win, may you find peace of mind now. :P But seriously, congrats. I always like seeing people winning for their first time, especially ones that have been playing the game for so long. On to a 5/10/15-runer now! :)

Hey, well done. And don't worry, one win won't knock you out of awfulplayers with the rest of us schlubs. ;)
You fall off the wall. You have a feeling of ineptitude.

Well done! and with the shield of the gong too, that's especially impressive from what I've heard about it :)

Thanks all!

I know my SO thinks that having "completed the game" means I don't need to play any more but I have a feeling that this is not the case...

Re: YAVP: There's a first time for everything: MiFi 3-rune w

Congrats on your first win!

...I'm kind of torn on whether you shield was a good thing? I mean, I'm sure the gong's resists, guardian spirit and occasional blocking is nice. But it also drew everything to you, and you never put in the skill levels to get rid of the penalties! (Delay, damage, casting). I mean, I suppose it is an interesting choice, and it worked out, but I'm juggling on that one. Hmmm.

Naaaah. You can always do better. Or do it different. There's more than enough different playstyles, builds, strategies and gimics to fool around with. They keep repeat runs interesting. Plus- crawl's a living game, constantly being tweaked and updated. So there's always something new to check out, and by the time you get around to repeating things they'll be changed. So there's plenty of reasons to keep killing yourself even after victory. ;)

I was torn too but I felt like I needed the rElec for golems. I played Zot 5 by lurking close to the entrance to the final vault and waiting for things to come to me, then retreating to the corridors to fight them, so I was fine with the Noisy aspect of the shield. I tried swapping to the bardiche of freezing to fights orbs of fire but it was too slow to remove the shield and switch weapons so I just took the penalties, and the lower damage from the trident - worked out OK.

I know, I know. And my thinking was that my play was a stochastic process and that I was probably going to win sooner or later if I just made enough attempts, like monkeys typing Shakespeare. Now I have to do it again to try to establish (since you can't prove) that it wasn't just chance...

I'm afraid that you will not be able to play in the no wins clan in the 0.11 tournament.
What made you happy today?

I'm gonna stick with the Expendables! Tasonir is gonna streak all the possible Naga combos of Chei by the end.
