YAVP - First 15 DSCj - What class was I again?

Only my third win and my first with 15 runes.


I started out as a conjurer, did Lair and Orc primarily with Animate Dead and a venom sabre, switched to Agony and pain brand for the midgame, went back to ice conjurations for Vaults and Zot, beat Tomb with essentially nothing but DU and a lot of frantic teleportation, then switched again to Long Blades for extended.

I could claim this was all an elaborate strategy to match tools to threats or something... but I would be lying.


This run was plagued by hilariously unlucky drops. Aside from jewellery and my rP cloak, I ended up manufacturing every single piece of equipment I used, including getting Kiku to pain-brand a qblade, affixing flame to Frederick's dblade, and buying something like 40 enchant scrolls for everything. Things I never found a single one of: /HW, /haste, ?acq, boots or a buckler with any ego at all, or ego headgear other than the +3 int I'm wearing. Even my (enormous) stock of artifact rings were kind of mediocre aside from Shaolin. My rF mut didn't kick in until I'd already cleared most of Zot, so for %90 of the game I was running around with nothing but rP and a pile of switch rings. Despite all that, MDA and a mix of dodge and armor made me reasonably tough, and all those rings meant I could usually get the resists I needed.

Demonspawn is rapidly becoming my favorite race; nightstalker and DG were the stand-out muts here. Though LoS reduction might seem like it would screw a conjurer over, I really like how it hobbles enemy casters and lets you engage on your own terms or slip into places you're not supposed to. Guardians are very useful both for offense and escape, and I would probably be dead a dozen times over if it weren't for well-timed executioners showing up to save the day.

Scariest moment was probably when, due to a series of exceedingly poor decisions involving a Lantern of Shadows, I managed to drag a nasty (and, in particular, extremely fast) Pan Lord through a pan portal - directly into Gloorx's vault. Ironically, Gloorx was one of only two unique lords I ended up killing. A close second would be trying to sneak around Tomb:3, making a bit too much noise, and having something like 10 angry mummies come into LoS on the same turn. The Trove I bought had a number of items behind glass, and helpfully provided a wand of digging - with 2 charges. Luckily I had teleportitis, a ring of cTele, and a lot of patience.


Anyway, I somehow managed it in spite of my own ineptitude. Lesson learned: when in doubt, Apport and run like a coward.
