YAVP: MiBe, first win since around .5

this has been a crazy run with axes - mostly lousy shops, hence the crap resists. not quite sure where to head next.

1) i'm about half done with the vault on crypt 5 - i think it's a lich vault? lots of liches at least. got banished to the abyss but found an easy exit. (abyss seems a lot more friendly in .10, relatively speaking) should i quit while i'm ahead? the promise of loot beckons.

2) no gold dragon armor yet - the +mr plate male is the best i've been able to do. same with that amulet of inaccuracy - the resists seem to outweigh the minus of inaccuracy. pretty good cloak though, and the boots of running are the hotness.

3) axe is craaaazy good. most things die in two or three hits. mennas' eudemon blade less so, but it was nice to finally kill that angelic jerkwad.

4) i have a resist corrosion amulet back in l2 stash - should i do slime? i figure tomb is waaaay out. haven't cleared elf 5 fully yet, dunno if it's worth the hassle. swamp was very easy, shoals was fairly trivial as well.

5) huge congratulations to the vault designers - they really add personality to levels. the crypt 5 vault in particular was a nice "oooohhh shit" feeling from the get-go.

5a) there's a magical prison back on level 19 or something like that - is it worth going back and clearing, or am i just asking for it (again). whole thing is silenced so no berzerk, etc.

holy crap dhex, i thought you were dead. i didn't post much but i lurked early ic a lot. you should update your blog sometimes, there is at least one person who cares for your recommendations (i'll never be able to pay you back for time machines, and hell i even like some of your stuff).

slime is easier these days, but i wouldn't want go there without rMut unless i'd already cleared zot. and the royal jelly can be hard for berserkers. tomb is out. you should probably just do vaults:8 and then zot. elf:5 is doable but there's the risk of demon spam or banishment, and annoying without conservation. i might do it anyway.

the prison thing might be a vault i can't recall or jory's castle. the silence should come from one or more silent spectres, and they are probably isolated. it's not likely that you'll find anything that can challenge you there, but keep one or two potions of speed in case it happens.

that is a lot of good gear, i'd even take the amulet.

if there's a small door, it's the prison vault. there's not much in the way of loot and it may contain an ancient lich or something.
if the door spams several tiles it's jory's castle (they're similar in layout), there's loot, and i've never had problems there (beware vampire knight paralysis).
there may be some other vault that fits the description, dunno.

Sorry for the misinformation! I had this vault about two months ago. All of a sudden silence was gone and I was getting summon spammed. I must have killed the spectre(s) without ever seeing it/them.

the prison didn't have that much cool stuff - i did like the hidden vaults behind the ancient lich and the silent spectre.

it seems a little unfair that curse skulls can summon while in a silence field, though.

finished up crypt 5 - may give a shot at elf 5 tomorrow.

how bad will the vaults be without life protection of any kind? because i've found zip in that area thus far.

Vault 8 with no life protection sounds very painful to me. Shadow dragons will be nasty for you, not because they will kill you (although with no life protect they might), but because you will lose many levels of experience. My MDFi from 0.9 dropped from lvl 24 to lvl 22 when trying Vault 8 with only rN+, and each shadow dragon took close to half its HP (and I had +2 GDA at the time), until I finally realized I needed rN++ and tried again (and then everything except liches was easy).

If you don't find at least rN+ on elf 5, I would either switch to TSO (rN+++ at full piety) and scum abyss for piety, or try slime pits for the third rune, but in either case you probably will get mutated (nexos in abyss or shining eyes in slime), and Trog wrath is annoying (from what I hear) but slime pits is hard, so neither option is something I would be happy with. It also depends on whether you are planning to try extended endgame. I am still fairly new to crawl, so if someone with more experience can comment I would appreciate it.

sorry, but that is just bad advice. draining is annoying but not very relevant: with the new skill system you'll lose experience levels but not skill points, so at worst you'll lose some max hp. tso'd do less for you in vaults:8 and zot than trog, specially if you have to deal with trog's rage, specially if you're in the abyss scumming for piety. just go ahead and don't get in over your head.

have you found an amulet of warding? that has rn+. there may be a few inidentified rings and amulets on shops too and you probably have dough to burn (ctrl+f). you also have +blink, so a ring of ctele would be great.

vault 8 was pretty easy. and picked up a gold dragon armor for my troubles. elf 5 less so. zot 5 was in some ways easier, but thank goodness for cure mutation potions.

Pre-digging Zot escape routes was a clever move. Keep your wand of digging handy, though, cause you may need to cut a short path between stairs climbing up the main Dungeon, too.

If you have a ring of teleport (or other evokable teleport), that can be useful, too. Sure, there's no controlled teleport on the Orb run, but if you get cornered by a Pan lord or a lich who just summoned a bunch of fiends, teleporting ANYWHERE else is better.

Also, be careful when using autotravel during the Orb run. You may miss some escape hatches, and these are your great friend on the run.
And a heavy +1 on Happy Corner's wand of digging advice.
Unless you absolutely must, don't try to fight the tougher enemies. Not only they can kill you, but _another_ tough enemy can come to take a shot or two on you during fighting the first one. Not to mention that you don't want to have to rest on the run.

absolutego: between those two wins, probably thousands? easily hundreds upon hundreds, mostly yasd's. next up i think i'll try either makhleb or maybe ydremmel or however you spell that. i've never wrapped my head around casters but they seem to be the only format that can take on the extended game. i'm open to suggestions.

Luckily, that's not so. A properly managed melee character can also handle a 15 rune run ("properly managed" probably means going TSO, of course).

It sure would.

Okawaru is the better choice, IMO. Not that Makhleb can't help you survive while you're under his banner, but Okawaru also does that AND he'll probably give you some gear that you can use the whole game. Plus there's no chance that Okawaru's powers will kill you just for being unlucky.

I'm running AllFours (yup!) and just finally got a good run going with a MiFi and my best run since I've come back to the game. I may even get a rune this run, or better if lucky. I have most of the resists I need, I just need to keep playing safe. I've only had one recent instance of playing stupid and it reminded me to stop tab attacking when things get nasty. I'm heading into elven halls tonight, maybe followed up by the vaults... and if all goes well, Swamps after that. I've already cleared through D:23 and Orc/Lair. My nerves are up.
