I've been playing DCSS on and off since .06, and I haven't been very good at it until lately. Before this, I had never fully cleared the lair or the orcish mines, and only visited the shoals, and briefly visited the swamp. Didn't know what to expect at all.
Got bored of trying to win, so I made a character to mess around with. Decided I'd only go with hammers, and that I'd worship the shining one to see what he's all about. Once I got a set of plate armor and an eveningstar I was able to blast through almost everything. Made it to the last level of the snake pit without any poison resistance, but backed out after getting surrounded. Picked up some poison resist gear in the elven halls and made it back. Snagged the rune and left.
The elven halls was fun. Got banished to the abyss in the last floor. Made it back, ended up hitting a confused elf with a wand of cold by accident, which pissed TSO off. Ended up beating the branch under penance.
The shoals was simple at this point. Ran in, got mes'd a few times, missed the bazaar, picked up the rune, got out of there. Had to summon an angel to deal with a unique that summoned a ton of water elementals.
Got banished to the abyss another time, I think in the crypt. It got pretty annoying, so I didn't bother killing much, just ran around looking for the exit.
The crypt was a lot of fun with TSO. Was able to clear most of it with 'o' and 'tab'. Learned the hard way that floating toes and skulls and whatnot were bad. Not sure if this happens in every crypt branch, but I got to a floor FULL of vampires. Wasn't much of a problem until one of them confused me and I hit my angel by accident. Ended up having to kill him. TSO was not happy at all.
Had 2 runes, wasn't able to do well in the slime pits, wasn't sure if I could beat Hell or make it through the Abyss or any of that, so I tried the vaults. It was a bit of a challenge, but I made it to the last level. What a difficulty change. TSO was still mad at me so I didn't have much rN. Didn't think that was a problem until I saw all the liches, shadow dragons, and all those kinds of things. I was able to take most of them out, but I got constricted by a tentacled monstrosity with no blinks or teleports, and a quicksilver came at the same time.
Sat there for a while just staring and trying to figure out what I could do. I thought I maybe I could bash the monstrosity and hide around a corner, but I really knew I couldn't. I thought I died from the constriction, but I guess it was the dragon that did me in.
I love this game.
