So last night, I slay a lich and beyond, I find this ridiculously awesome ring. Stoked, I return to my stash and call it a night. I pick it up today after work, return to D19 and the VERY FIRST monster I find kills me! Arrrrrrrgh.............!!!

  Code:
117909 ClawlessVictory the Warrior (level 16, -29/152 HPs)
Began as a Naga Abyssal Knight on Feb 27, 2012.
             Was the Champion of Lugonu.
Annihilated by an enormous slime creature (55 damage)
... on Level 19 of the Dungeon on Mar 3, 2012.
The game lasted 06:04:47 (38524 turns).

Ring:

  Code:
y - the ring of Xom's Displeasure (left hand) {AC+2 Dex+5 Dam+5}

I can't help but think Xom had a hand in this... :(

standing near merged slime creatures somehow tends to have this result

Merged slime are incredibly dangerous, they are easily able to hit for over 50 damage against armored opponents and over 80 damage on low AC characters. There are two strategies for beating them:

Pull off one at a time, this is ideal.
If strategy one fails and you are a melee character, DO NOT back into a corridor, instead fight the slimes in an open area where they can't merge, your AC should reduce most of their damage.

Overall, slime pack are the most difficult enemies to kill in the mid game, I'd rather fight a hydra

Yeah you need to pull slimes up stairs one at a time.

Being invisible or simply running out of sight for a while can divide slimes. If they can't see their target, they quickly break up.

whenever you find yourself deeper in the dungeon than your character level you should
1. be very very careful
2. look for a branch to kill instead

unless you are playing a challenge game w/o branches :P

Thanks for the tips guys, but I know how to deal with slime creatures. Just a stupid move brought on by sheer cockiness after acquiring that awesome ring. I had the slime down to a quarter of it's health before it was too late.

I've read other YASD posts and characters dying after finding great gear seems to be a trend.

You should think about the first part again. If a slime creature merges you should move away.

"The monster will die in one more hit" is a risk, and if you take a lot of 99% chances in a row, you fail.

Hey, the 'S' in YASD doesn't stand for Smart :P

Just thought with the added damage boost from the ring I could take it. And being a Naga, I couldn't simply just move away. I tried to bend space at the last moment, but it either failed or didn't move me far enough away. I should've gated to the abyss or at least read a blink scroll.
