YAVP: First win! (DsFi)

And a fifteen rune run on a character I had zero faith in, no less. I was just messing around with some awkward species/background combos and things turned out A-OK.

I'm honestly surprised I managed to survive. There were at least five moments in the end game when a teleport kicked in at just the last second, or an enemy acted erratically and let me live. Food supplies dwindled, piles of scrolls were burnt, and oh so many useless items littered the ground. I thought my game was over when I realized a Demonspawn couldn't make the typical Okawaru-to-TSO swap. I was obsessed over the fact that I couldn't find some Gold Dragon Armour until I noticed that I really didn't need it. :D

It just blows my mind that my (in my opinion) lease feasible character that got through the early game could be the one to actually win, despite the lack of appropriate aptitudes and equipment that my better fighters have had. No doubt the Freeze mutation helped quite a bit, but still.

I've been playing this game for the better part of a year now, so it feels good to finally have a win. I couldn't bring myself to settle for anything less than a fifteen rune win. I think I can allow myself to take a bit of a break now. I don't think my heart could take another run like that any time soon. :lol:

Congratulations! My first win wasn't even a 15-runer (not even close), so that's even more impressive.

It kinda blows MY mind, though, that you went heavy melee AND turned to Kiku without even learning any Necromancy (and you rolled the caster-friendly Powered By Pain mutation, too). Why did you pick Kiku, anyway? Was it to protect against mummy curses in Tomb (certainly one of his better perks), or were you thinking "Nah, picking Makhleb or Yred would be the wussy way out!", or what? ;)

It seemed like a far better idea at the time, but yes, I was just picking him up to help with Tomb. Definitely simplified things there, but it didn't help as much as I was hoping. It mostly did it for the torment resistance, but that didn't really seem to do much, sadly. Tomb has always been a headache for me, and it was the last rune I picked up, so I just wanted to be extra careful. The entire god situation was pretty awkward for me with the inability to choose TSO or Zin. Haha.
