YASD: XL12 SETm by 4 Oklobs

I had what seemed like a promising character recently when I discovered that all three permanent staircases leading down from Lair:3 to Lair:4 were guarded by 4 oklob plants! (2 on each side of an enclosed area) I took an escape hatch down but there were none leading back up. Then I read an unIDed scroll that happened to be curse weapon, meaning that I had to head back to my stash for remove curse (or never used blade hands again), but died en route because of the oklob plants. I realize now that I could have survived by teleport + either reading a fog scroll or evaporating a water potion nearby but still...

1. Were the guarded staircases by design, or random? I thought that only two permanent staircases leading in the same direction could appear in a "vault".
2. Probably I would have either had to ignore the rest of Lair entirely, or use an invisibility potion (not sure if I had) + controlled teleport/blink (had the ring for the first time ever) + blade hands and hope it works. Very few of my non-magic-specialist characters could have taken down all 4 oklobs, so it seems kind of unfair to me. Char dump below:

A few things:

First, don't read scrolls if there's some un-ID'd scroll that could shaft you that badly, eg, don't read anything until you can live through Immolation, don't read anything while holding a weapon if Curse Weapon will shaft you horribly, etc.

Second, for a non-Okawaru transmuter, you can overwhelm Oklob plants with sufficient amounts of Sticks to Snakes. Sucking up the piety loss for doing that would probably have been your best bet. Another option would be to locate a jelly somewhere, lead it down, Enslave it with you wand, and tell it to kill the oklobs - jellies are immune to oklob plant damage, so will slime them to death.

By design. One of the vault developers thought that it would be a good "challenge" I suppose, as I have encountered it before (Lair:1 -> Lair:2). I personally would just take the "random" staircases, if I don't have access to invisibility/minions.

Sorry, I searched for it but maybe I don't know where to look.

I personally would just take the "random" staircases.

Tried that, but there wasn't one leading up, which is why I panicked. I completely forgot about minions; if not snakes then maybe imps or undead would work at low levels.
