Innate Abilities, Weirdness & Mutations

Highlight so far - killing the Lernaean Hydra. I was happily LRDing everything in sight when it came into view. Luckily, it didn't see me at the time and I was able to fall back and channel some mana back. Then I went back in with swiftness up in case I needed to run. In the end, as such things are, it was actually anti-climactic since iron shot against a 0 AC opponent took it out in three shots. I've never had this branch end and was terrified about taking it on. Just seeing something that can 1-shot pretty much anything in melee is enough to scare anyone I think.
A few questions - I've gotten all of Vehumet's gifts so far. Is it worth training up an elemental skill for one of the storms (or air at the - for tornado)? Obviously I'm also hoping for a shatter book too. I had never experienced the true power of LRD until a prior EE, but seeing it just tear through elf, especially elf 4 at high power was a real eye-opener.
Another question, which is the next rune? I'm leaning toward vault because I've tried shoals in the past and run with my tail between my legs, but I'm wondering if poison cloud won't help there which I didn't have before with a Tm. At the same time, poison will work on most things in vault too and I'll be able to abuse LRD too.
Thirdly, is statue form worth it for this guy? I haven't cast it once. I was excited when I found it in Roxanne's book, but now I'm wondering if I shouldn't just get those levels back. I was thinking about having it up nearly all the time, maybe with stasis along with stoneskin for high armor and damage resists but I haven't had the need for it.
Finally, what skills should I train next? I think I need two levels of staff for min delay on the earth staff. I don't plan on going past buckler for shields. I'm trying to get evocation up to 15 which should get me 99% efficiency on the staff hits for earth crushing but I'm wondering if some XP would be better spent in spell schools.
