                    Innate Abilities, Weirdness & Mutations

Highlight so far - killing the Lernaean Hydra. I was happily LRDing everything in sight when it came into view. Luckily, it didn't see me at the time and I was able to fall back and channel some mana back. Then I went back in with swiftness up in case I needed to run. In the end, as such things are, it was actually anti-climactic since iron shot against a 0 AC opponent took it out in three shots. I've never had this branch end and was terrified about taking it on. Just seeing something that can 1-shot pretty much anything in melee is enough to scare anyone I think.

A few questions - I've gotten all of Vehumet's gifts so far. Is it worth training up an elemental skill for one of the storms (or air at the - for tornado)? Obviously I'm also hoping for a shatter book too. I had never experienced the true power of LRD until a prior EE, but seeing it just tear through elf, especially elf 4 at high power was a real eye-opener.

Another question, which is the next rune? I'm leaning toward vault because I've tried shoals in the past and run with my tail between my legs, but I'm wondering if poison cloud won't help there which I didn't have before with a Tm. At the same time, poison will work on most things in vault too and I'll be able to abuse LRD too.

Thirdly, is statue form worth it for this guy? I haven't cast it once. I was excited when I found it in Roxanne's book, but now I'm wondering if I shouldn't just get those levels back. I was thinking about having it up nearly all the time, maybe with stasis along with stoneskin for high armor and damage resists but I haven't had the need for it.

Finally, what skills should I train next? I think I need two levels of staff for min delay on the earth staff. I don't plan on going past buckler for shields. I'm trying to get evocation up to 15 which should get me 99% efficiency on the staff hits for earth crushing but I'm wondering if some XP would be better spent in spell schools.

I'd say forget about the storms or tornado and aim for Shatter instead (raise Earth Magic). It makes better use of your existing skill set without too much XP investment. Turn off Conjurations.
Bump up Fighting - it looks a bit low.
And get Flight if you find it. It makes Shoals a lot easier.

Elf 5? You've cleared Elf 5 for the loot, and you're still worried about Shoals? Just fly back to the staircase whenever you're low on mp, and you'll be fine. Iron Shot kills everything. Shoals 5 is very dangerous… to somebody still at xl 15. You, on the other hand, are rocking Iron Shot and Shatter and reusable invisibility. You might still choose to run from Mennas or Mara. Maybe a kraken if it shows up. Everything else dies.

Vaults 8 will probably be no challenge whatsoever, either. Alistair's Intoxication, unfortunately, doesn't work as well as it used to, but what does it matter if you can just kill everything with Shatter? Honestly, I'd rather bait the vault guards upstairs because it's quieter and you lose less loot to glowing shapeshifters if you leave them asleep, but either the entry committee is definitely the least threatening part of the level. Haste and run for the entry stairwell every time you accidentally pull more than one monster, and you'll be fine.

Pump more charms for Haste, by the way. Very Good is very bad for a high-level spell that should lead off every significant encounter and also any attempt to escape. Turn off everything else; nothing could possibly be so important to a caster at this point than getting Haste online.

No Blink spell? That's serious bad luck, but Vaults 8 may provide.

Do consider upgrading to a regular shield. It works fine with an elemental staff, and other than the now-modest xp investment there's no downside. 35SH is very substantial. While it doesn't work against crowds and a number of high-end attacks, basic melee attacks never really go out of style.

Stealth would be very useful. Stuff is easier to kill if it hasn't noticed you yet. Escape is easier too. The way of the Shatter Ninja is mysterious, yet inexplicably powerful.

As long as you keep the proper safety kit on-hand for backfiring, a crystal ball of energy is better for mp recovery than a staff of channeling. You've already got enough evocations to use it semi-safely, as long as you've got a method on-hand to prevent or correct confusion and stat damage.

Statue Form is for melee or emergency resists only. The perma-slow is not a true slow, so stasis does nothing. It will nerf your spell damage per time unit by -33%. Melee would suffer the same way, but Statue Form provides a damage buff that not-coincidentally exactly cancels it out.

OK, in my defense it's the first time I've gotten relatively pure caster this far. Most of them seem to die around lair or even early with an EE since they're almost as bad as hunters in the first 5 levels aka good luck if you've run out of stones. I've never been "afraid" of the vault guards with a melee guy in plate or splint or whatever since worst case I can stairdance them and take some hits. With the old crusader build, it was easy enough to haste, invis and then go to town and with a CheTm, I would stand in the middle and 1-2 shot each guard with my Ginsu blade hands of death.

On an unrelated note, what is the damage output of shatter? I was testing it out on Vault 6 and 7 and even though I have it at near full pips, I thought for some reason it would really lay waste to more walls than it does. Not that I'm disappointed - mind you, but after watching people firestorm their way through ziggs with friendly vortexes getting spawned and everything, is it really comparable to the storms?

One more quick reply regarding clearing Elf 5 but not Shoals, Elf 5 was actually a piece of cake since I had abjuration available, LRD, and poison cloud. Given how the final vault area has a nice little funnel going, it was easy to keep a poison cloud up, LRD the corners of walls to keep the damage output high and abjure anything that did get summoned.

Contrast that to my vague memories of shoals, where it's pretty wide open with lots of deep water. Considering that I just got flight recently, I was a little worried about that.

I also just found a book with haste in it and learned it right away. Then I turned on charms which had been sitting at 7 since around the lair from when I think I found repel missiles. I'll take your advice and turn off everything else for now.

Speaking of spells, anything that I have learned that I can amnesia? I'm thinking that stone arrow can probably go, even though I still use it to pick off fleeing enemies, there's no reason that I can't use iron shot for that. Is it worth keeping stone skin memorized? I know that there's synergy with statue form so I guess if I need that HP and armor, I really need it. No blink as far as I remember because if I did have it, I would have learned it and kept that cTele ring on near constantly. I think I have a book with controlled blink in a shop that I now have the money for. Is it worth having iron shot and LCS both memorized? I didn't pick up LCS yet since I had already memorized iron shot and to be honest the damage per mana isn't that different from what I read in the wiki and learndb. Is it more accurate?

Finally, I've got a couple of dragon hides floating around, storm, swamp, steam and mottled if memory serves correctly. Would I be better served picking up one and enchanting it instead of the randart animal skin I've got on? I'm wearing it primarily for the sInv right now, but I think I have another randart somewhere with sInv on it. I still haven't found anything with rPois, although that is less necessary since I don't have snake and already cleared swamp and hive.

No, it isn't quite on par with Fire or Ice Storm for damage in the post-endgame. It's earth skill only, not conjurations/elemental, so it is substantially cheaper and easier to get working in exchange for not having quite the same upper limit. On the other hand, the wall damage is a significant boon. The impact of losing those few random tiles of wall is surprisingly strong; most Rune vaults are not designed to have wall tiles randomly turned into floor tiles, so even though you can't reliably pick and choose walls to destroy, after a couple Shatters you'll find quite a few shortcuts and escape routes that shouldn't normally be there. Frequently, you can walk right in and burgle treasure rooms without ever even seeing the monsters on guard that you're supposed to fight.

Remember that Shatter does not deal satisfactory damage against flying or jelly-like opponents, and cannot be made to do so. Keep another source of damage for those; noise is also a factor to consider and Iron Shot covers both issues. Additionally, Shatter damage scales significantly with earth magic skill. Just because you can technically cast it doesn't mean you're doing the most possible damage, so eventually you'll want to top off that skill. Not before getting Haste online, of course, and maybe not before getting other useful skills, but eventually. A staff of earth and/or archmagi-branded robes help with damage quite a bit, too.

Given how the final vault area has a nice little funnel going, it was easy to keep a poison cloud up, LRD the corners of walls to keep the damage output high and abjure anything that did get summoned.

Contrast that to my vague memories of shoals, where it's pretty wide open with lots of deep water. Considering that I just got flight recently, I was a little worried about that.


The Elf terrain is definitely more favorable to an earth elementalist (or a caster with cloud spells) than Shoals terrain, but on the other hand a single elf that sneaks past your field of death can hit you for ~140hp damage with a Crystal Spear, dump you in the Abyss, paralyze you, etc. A merfolk that survives your Iron Shot barrage will hit you with a javelin. It hurts, but it's not really on the same level.

Dig can probably go. I have never seen a need for more digging than can be gotten from the charges of whichever wand of digging happens to be charged.

Poisonous Cloud is probably pretty close to its expiration date, too. It's very powerful in the midgame, but as the game progresses more and more monsters will be immune.

Yes. Cast it all the time, whenever you're not currently in combat and it is about to expire. You'll recover the mp naturally faster than you'll need to cast it, and free AC is good. Never start a fight without pre-casting it.

I did not have a satisfactory experience with Crystal Spear during my earth elementalist runs. The short range really hurts it, although Vehumet helps somewhat. If you're trying to get by with minimum conjurations Crystal Spear will have terrible accuracy and won't deal enough damage to offset its weaknesses, but on the other hand if you pay your xp investment properly things hit by it won't hit back.

That randart skin is actually quite nice caster armor. Good AC, and both rPois and SInv are useful throughout the game even if they aren't always critical. You've got the bare minimum resistances covered by other means, so the only non-artifact armors you might consider replacing it with would be robes of resistance, robes of the archmagi, swamp dragon armor, ice dragon armor, or fire dragon armor. The light dragon armors are flat-out not as good as what you have, and storm or heavier will shut down casting until after you've already collected most of the Runes in the game.

If you do decide to upgrade to dragon armor, expect to take a fairly large hit to your casting success rate of all your high-level spells, plus any that you stopped training after you got to excellent. Unlike with shields, armor skill only partially mitigates the penalty. The AC, GDR, and resistances gained are defensively quite strong, but very costly xp-wise to exploit since you have to overtrain every support skill you have to compensate.

Yeah, it was mostly the GDR that I was looking for in one of the dragon armors. Shaving off 20% off of anyone that gets close enough to hit me isn't anything to sneeze at but I've been fairly good about getting into the caster mindset that nothing should get close enough to hit me in the first place.

I suppose I can go hoover up orc, elf and the vaults so far and see if any of the robes out there are robes of resistance or the archmagi. As I think I mentioned, I do have a swamp dragon hide too and rPois would be nice. I do have something with sInv, but I'm not sure I have anything else with rElec floating around.

Went back and did shoals. It was as annoying as I remembered as a melee fighter, although since I was overleveled, it wasn't that dangerous. With fly up it wasn't nearly as bad, but my init.txt must be messed up somehow because auto-explore wasn't prompting me to recast Fly so I ended up doing most of it manually. LRDed a wall and found the rune almost right away on Shoals:5, but still cleared it for the loot.

Then I went to Crypt which I had never done before. Crypt:5 seemed like a throne room for Khufu with several guardian mummies and ancient lich and a couple of regular lichs. Looking at the des, it was the "underwater base" version. I didn't see a boss setup on it, so maybe it was just my luck that put Khufu there. Luckily LRD pulled out a couple of them early and Khufu's little tomb thing I've read about doesn't stand up to well against shatter :D.

Next I cleared Vault:8 with judicious use of haste, swiftness, repel missles and shatter, shatter, shatter with some stair dancing thrown in for extra measure. The area by the stairs is just covered in equipment. It's really pretty comical.

Since I've never done crypt before (I have no idea why not), I've obviously never done Tomb either. Is my character set up to deal with it? I know that I could do Abyss if needed and probably Slime. I guess the real question is "Is this character in decent shape for end game or should I just try Zot?"

Finally for spells, I finally have access to regen and blink, but not controlled blink. Any other spells I should be on the lookout for?

Tomb is the post-endgame deathtrap one. Earth elementalists are particularly suited for dealing with it, but it'll still almost certainly kill the first few characters you enter with. This character is close to being able to handle it, assuming good play, but as it'll be your first visit I don't know that it is reasonable to expect good play. If you're planning to try for 15 Runes, you'll have to go in eventually, but if you do boost summoning a few more levels so you can Abjure major demons on the first try, every time. Also be prepared to deal with lots of stat drain, rotting, and other resource drain.

Anyway, the rest of D and Z should be manageable enough. Once you've cleared that, you can decide how many Runes you want to go for.

Thanks KoboldLord. I read about Tomb on the wiki after posting and realize that even with sequence breaking via wall destruction, it's probably too tough without torment immunity. I did find a highlevel book, so it's possible that it's the Necronomicon (of course it could be the Grand Grimoire instead).

Right now I think I have a couple of things to do prior to the rest of the dungeon and Zot 1-4.
1) Learn blink and regen
2) Go through orc and elf and gather up all the glowing robes to see if any are archmagi or resistance

Two questions.
1) Should I pick up a different shield and train up shields to 15? I'm on the fence with this because while the extra shield would be good, I like have the extra pip of rN from the buckler.
2) Is it worth learning teleport control or should I just rely on the ring? Obviously the spell gives increased flexibility but should I save those spell slots for something else instead?

Torment is nasty, but it's far from the worst thing that Tomb will throw at you. It's not losing half of your HP at one shot that kills you, it's the followup smite-storm or the heavy melee attacks. Or the Zot traps invoked against you. Or stumbling into a blade trap or Zot trap trying to run away.

Torment immunity is not required, although it does help somewhat. The critical trick is to avoid ever fighting more than one significant enemy at a time. Torment deals less damage if you're already injured, so if you can force a one-on-one confrontation your Iron Shot will carry the day. And your Haste. And your Abjuration.

Also, the sphinx ambush is horrible.

I would, but it isn't strictly necessary. A regular shield gives fairly formidable SH values, and you never stop getting hit by melee attacks or projectiles entirely even if they're supported by unblockable attacks too. rN isn't actually very useful by this point in the game. Draining only reduces your character level, never your skills, so once you hit XL27 the xp just starts stacking up. The xp stacked up in this way has no use other than to absorb draining attacks. I routinely go through Tartarus, the undead Hell, with no pips of rN and still don't get drained enough to lose a level.

I usually stick with the ring because I find spell slots are always at a premium. Also, if I never take the ring off I never have to worry about spending a turn setting up CTele before casting Blink.

A few things worth remembering about Tomb:

* Statue Form helps (quite a lot) with Torment damage. It also prevents rotting. Stasis prevents slowing / paralysis.

* Mummies don't fly. Shatter kills the hell out of mummies. 2-3 casts for Greater Mummies, in my recent game.

* Dead monsters don't torment, smite, or summon.

With Vehumet's boost and your Staff of Earth, you're breathing down the neck of max Shatter power. And Vehumet's MP-for-kills means MOAR SHATTAR.

I had TSO healing and was a DD, but Tomb was one of my easiest post-endgame runes. Oddly, Tomb:3 was easier than Tomb:1 -- killing just a mummy with Iron Shot was less sustainable than Shattering several.

I'm not saying this is actually a good technique for you to deal with Tomb, but it was awfully effective for me.

Shatter's a lot less useful in the demonic branches, as the worst demons fly. It's useless in Slime, unless you're gonna break into the vaults with it.

Elemental staves and shields are great together. So much upside, no downside. The regular shield is a good choice.

Thanks for the tips. No real updates yet other than clearing the rest of D, Z:1-4 and the entrance area of Z:5. Now I have to decide if I'm going to do any of the "endgame" content. I've done the Abyss enough in prior games to know that other than mutation, there's limited danger there other than boredom. Slime was easy enough for me as a MDBe which was the first time I cleared it but finding that shatter isn't that useful there is disappointing. I could possibly ninja the rune, but is it worth the hassle and reading about your exploits in Tomb has made me think seriously about it.

Iron Shot kills top-end jellies just fine, and Haste will let you run to a stairwell. It's pretty dangerous, particularly the acid blobs since they have ranged attacks, but an earth elementalist is probably better equipped to handle it than a berserker.

Did the Abyss scum and came out with the rune and pretty much nothing else useful. I also took out the vestibule for some more XP. Then I started in on Zot:5 and I realized I have no idea how to reasonably clear this floor / get to the orb. This was the same problem I had with the last character I had that got this far - the orbs of fire are just so tough to take down, even hasted since I end up with low mana and about half my health gone after taking one on. At the same time, my stealth is no where near good enough to sneak around. I know it must be possible, since all sorts of characters do it, so what am I missing?

Fight orbs of fire alone, is pretty much it. Haste as soon as you see them, swap on rMut and any fire resistance you can easily do, and then make them follow you at the edge of LOS until you're in a cleared area, preferably near the stairs. If you can't get them there in one Haste, clear out of the level to rest off the magic contamination and try again with full hp and mp. They have very high AC, so Rapid Deconstruction will do nothing and your staff of earth melee will be significantly impaired. Iron Shot will do the job, but expect it to take a full mp bar almost every time.

Orbs of fire have the reputation of being horrible because they'll tear up your hp and mp and possibly mutate you no matter what your build is and even if you have the resistances. The only build I've ever used that didn't have trouble with them was a 15-Rune Ice Storm caster with both a staff of cold and robes of the archmagi. They still sometimes took half my mp bar, but at least anything they were with was also vaporized.

Using shadow creatures to bring in a friendly orb of fire and a draconian pack to take care of a hostile orb of fire has worked well for me in Zot. Spell power doesn't matter much, so you can cast it with little investment with Vehumet's support.

In the end, I just cast shatter at the orb guardians / draconians / lichs and summons and iron shotted the dragons / orbs of fire. I was walking in the orb chamber when I remembered "Umm, apportation will get you the orb and not expose you to whatever's hiding in that black area."

After that it was a pretty easy run back up through the levels except for one point where I used the crystal ball of energy and ended up with no mana but luckily I was able to channel some with the staff and then keep running.
