I started this game yesterday exactly one month after my MiCK died in the Abyss with 4 runes (Xom's capriciousness, lol). I somewhat arbitrarily want to get my first win before the new year, and I somewhat arbitrarily would like to do it with the MDFi^Trog build.

I found a great eveningstar artifact on Lair 1 (+3 +5, slay orc, rF+) but am currently using a heavily enchanted an anti-magic ankus. I also have an anti-magic demon whip that is not very heavily enchanted (yet). No great armor yet; I got my rPois banded mail from Wiglaf. I have a +2 orcish plate mail sitting in my Hive stash. I got fairly lucky with the placement of stairs on Shoals 5 and was able to stair dance everything in the rune vault (the only unique was Donald).

I guess my main questions are as follows:

1) How does my skill training look so far? I started evocations because of the rod of destruction-ice, but I have not used it once. I usually stop crossbows around five but I forgot to turn it off this time until it was at 7. After bad experiences with Zot traps I am determined to get traps and doors up to at least 12 if not higher before turning it off.

2) Also, it is at about this point in the game that I start to have anxiety about not having three pips of life protection. I have a ring, but my only other pip would have to come from an unrandart axe (war axe of dim light). Is there anything outside of elf, Vaults 8, and Dungeon 22+ that I should worry about?

3) I have screaming 1, but only 2 cure mutations and no source of resist mutation. When should I cure it?

4) One of Trog's first gifts was Lehudib's crystal spear. I considered training throwing for it, but opted against it. Right choice?

first things first: start using that demon whip. NOW. superior base damage and attack delay more than make up for everything else. unless some damage chart wizard shows up and proves me wrong in which case you should ignore that part.

1) skill training is ok, I forgot the exact numbers you need for optimal M&F but you can switch it off right now, it's certainly less than 15 for a demon whip. probably 12?

2) you only really need rN+ for everything rN related, it's enough to take the OHSHIT out of shadow dragons.

3) NEVER EVER WASTE CURE MUT ON SCREAMING MUTATIONS IF YOU DO YOU WILL DIE IN REAL LIFE. screaming mutations are harmless for everyone, even more so for a dwarf in heavy armour which probably makes more noise walking around than screaming.

4) a fancy spear of returning is still a spear of returning, which means it's rather shit, so yeah, don't bother

Thanks for the advice.

I started using the demon whip as recommended and have enchanted it up to a decent level. I cleared the first half of the Vaults and some of Crypt. I started elf, but after clearing down through Elf 3 I had actually lost quite a large amount of XP. So I left and finished off Crypt while training axes so that I could use the artifact axe and get myself to rN++. (BTW, great call on using the demon whip over eveningstar. Not only was the quicker attack advantageous, but the anti-magic brand also helped me with the ancient liches and enabled me to defeat Khufu for the first time).

Anyhow, I don't anticipate a problem with the elf ending, and I hope that rN++ will allow me to get at least a little XP out of it. I have only gone to D17 and Vaults 5, so there is still a good chance of finding rMut. I don't want to get to far ahead of myself, but if I don't find rMut before Zot 5, should I roam the Abyss? The only time I have been to Zot 5 I was using this same build and the orbs of fire mutated me horribly before they put me out of my misery.

Also, I have never started training a new weapons class mid-game before. Is that going to hurt me? Axes got all the way up to 11 with training only while I did a little bit of elf and Crypt 5. I am still using the demon whip until I see something that could drain me.

Stop training a new weapon class for a resistance that is utterly irrelevant as ebarrett said above. That axe is a really bad weapon, considering that it has a bad weapon base type, a mediocre brand and the crippling *Rage property. Go max Fighting, Armour and Shields instead. If you need still need experience for whatever reason, which I don't think you do, late Dungeon, Zot 1-4 and Slime are quite full of it.

I got over my fixation on rN and stopped training axes. I've been able to enchant the demon whip up a little more. I have plate mail of Pandemonium and a randart plate mail that gives me a bit of a damage bonus but a few less AC. I maxed out armor, shields, and fighting and decided to train dodging and now have that up to a decent level.

I have cleared through dungeon 27 and am getting ready for Zot. Still no rMut, but I have at least two cure mutation potions stashed and maybe three. I am worried about the -20% HP mutation but am also worried about using cure mutations before encountering orbs of fire without rMut.

I have plenty of magic mapping scrolls stored, so I could magic map and dive to Zot 5.

After having crawl anxiety dreams for two nights I decided to try my hand at zot.When I first spotted the orb I had to save-quit and pace around for about 15 minutes. I was terrified because I had the heals slowly mutation and no means of hasting or blinking. Had a tele ring but did not use it. Encountered several Pan lords on the ascent, including one that pounded me on D:1. Scariest moment of the game was getting taken down to about 30 HP against an ice dragon and mottled draconian something or other in the orb vault.

I had to quaff all three of my cure mutations after an early encounter with some orbs of fire. That cured everything except slow healing. I could not have won without a wand of healing. I timed use of my amulet of conservation very poorly and lost all useful scrolls and heal wounds potions.

I can't tell if I want to take a break from crawl or download trunk and try to become proficient with some sort of caster. I really appreciate all the advice. This day has been a long time coming.
