YASD: HaGl - super strong minotaurs?

Hey guys,

I just lost a promising Halfling Gladiator of Okawaru... shot by a Minotaur for 42 damage. The minotaurs in the Labyrinth are surprisingly easy for some reason. I can take it down on 95% of characters who enter Labyrinths, usually no more than level 12. The only wake-up call I ever had was when one minotaur picked up a stack of steel darts and threw them at me for ~20 damage each, but otherwise Minotaurs are hardly a threat, and especially not at level 23 with 15/32/35 defenses. The worst part? It was only a shapeshifter, came out of some vault that was generated on the level (it was a strange level layout). But somehow I died... what a shame. I had some great rings and items (my first ever eveningstar in almost 5 years of playing DCSS, and 2 scrolls of acquirement stashed away, I didn't know what to spend it on), and I survived some crazy stuff too: Ogre Mage, Rock Troll, and Stone Giant spawn on D:12, Lernaean Hydra, paralyzed for 7 turns on Orc:4 with high priests swarming.

You won't get stats on the bow that it used to fire the arrow, but I'd bet it had some decent bonuses.

Ranged combat is a mystery to everyone but even before that minotaurs can do up to 35 base damage in a single hit, so 42 is to be expected. And even if it wasn't, you were below 40hp on d:23 and taking chances instead of healing, so yeah, that could and should have been avoided.
