CIP: Spider Blade Cat of the Maid :3

So, I've stumbled across a new combination that I'm having a blast with- FeTm of Nemelex. Honestly, the combination is just hilarious. I mean really, it's a cure little kitty that explodes into a monstrous spider at a moment's notice. It's even better now that I have blade hands up and running- I'm practically an aberration of flying steel, fur, and furry. The cards are amusing too- you can't even pretend you're drawing them as a felid. Basically, I'm a one man cogitative dissonance machine- I like to imagine the confusion and subsequent terror of the dungeon denizens as they underestimate and approach what looks like a helpless target, only to have it explode into an unholy monstrosity, or for a playing card to float up out of nowhere, and then pull horrible death out of thin air.

(You know, it never occurred to me till this game, but Zin must really hate transumters, huh?)

Practically, these guys are a little hard to get going. You need to simultaneously train up your casting abilities, mele abilities, and evocations, with quite a few minuses to overcome- which means you're very much hurting for xp early on. You also need to burn a few points on str, so you have the capacity to carry enough distilled potions (0.9.1 Tms still start with it, bitches! :P ) and decks to be versatile. Once you overcome the start though, it synergizes quite nicely. Forms provides the felid with branded attacks and resistances. Nemelex cleans up all the junk you can't use and provides ranged attacks and summons. Plus, since you've got extra lives, you don't have to worry about the classic killed-by-your-own-deck-of-legendary-summons YASD so much.

Managed to clear down to the lair without losing a life yet, though there were a few close calls. Nemelex has just shined though- best moments have to be when She sicked a vengeful Pit fiend on that one hydra that almost got me. Or when I went down some stairs, found a sleeping Rupert one square away, and immediately hammered my deck of legendary summons and got a bone dragon that ripped right into him, and then trampled him screaming halfway across LOS before he finally succumbed to merciful death. I don't even think he scratched it.

My jewellery sucks. I upgraded from a ring of lev, to +1 evasion, to +1 dex. Wtf floor god? Did Neme clean you out last night? You holding a grudge or something?

Not sure where I'm going with spells- I mean, I've never had a transmuter survive past blade hands yet, and I'm at the mercy of the floor god. I mean, I'll want the usual buffs and utilities, plus abjure for hostile summons, but it's later forms I'm thinking about. I'm delaying orc (and possible book shops) for now- I've found in the past it's a bad place for fragile transumuters, not to mention felid deaths (oops, what's this? You came pack to life in a different bubble, surrounded by a fresh batch of orcs, and no stairs in sight? Surprise!). I'm pretty sure I want statue form- giving kitty some AC and resists seems the way to go. Dunno if I'll even try for lich or dragon- those are big investments, and I might now even see 'em. Exploding into a dragon does sound awesome though, plus the rF++ for the orb run...

The weirdest thing is school training. Every new tmut spell is paired with a different element- and I'm really not sure if I should be wasting points training any of them (as I said before, xp's spread thin as is). Does upping the power level of forms make you hit harder, or just increase the duration?

Also- take a look at the beggining of the logs in the dump, it's kind of funny. Almost immediately after conversion, Neme turns a goblin into a pulsating lump of free xp for me. Then she did the same to Terrance- not sure if I gained or lost xp there, but it was amusing.

Another also- transmutation titles are awesome. I'm rather irked that Nimble somehow replaced transmogrifier, and I'm working to fix that (oh my goodness, firefox's spellchecker knows transmogrify, even though it doesn't know teleport. XD Someone's got interesting priorities...)

Edit: Gods dang it, how did I end up putting this in completely the wrong forum? Mod powers to the rescue!

Re: CIP: Spider Blade Cat of the Maid :3

I can't tell you how others play transmuters, but I generally start to try to branch out into utility and conjurations after blade hands. I've never ascended one before though so I'm not sure if there's a flaw in my overall strategy or just my tactical play. In theory, blade hands can give you ridiculous amounts of damage at high levels of UC, since it can hit 5 delay (at 25 UC) with 12+((str+dex)/4) dmg per attack (if they haven't changed the calcs in .10). This is what makes Che a favorite choice for Tms, since most characters at full will have around an extra 15 points of damage per hit, meaning they're hitting at ~54 damage per game turn.

The downside of blade hands - especially for a felid - is that you don't have the extra resists that lots of characters get from an artefact weapon/shield. I guess that's true for many of the forms though but in my experience blade hands is "preferred" because you still keep your armour, which does away in many of the other forms. Since felids don't have wearable armor, it might not be the go to spell for them.

Felids can't wield a weapon/shields, though.

FeTm sounds pretty awesome to start, but that sounds like it's going to get really tough once evaporate's mephitic stops working. I can't imagine running up to dragons with a 100hp char and beating them to death.

And yes, bone dragons are awesome :) Takes a few to kill Mennas though.

Right, wasn't thinking that. I've only played a felid twice.

Re: CIP: Spider Blade Cat of the Maid :3

This sounds like fun! I played a FeTm for a bit but that was of Jiyva, which had its own unique issues. I can't remember how far I got, XL16 or so maybe. It was pretty powerful early on with the 0.9 transmuter spells but really really squishy later. Of course, I think I was a little under-leveled due to jelly kills. I think branching into conjurations would be much safer than relying on melee but the kitty to dragon image is hilarious and should happen. I'm really not sure the hp boost would make up for totally trashing your EV though.

I don't usually bother training the elemental skills for all the transmutation spells except for a little early on to get them working faster. The exception is necromancy for eventual necromutation, so I guess you'd need plenty of fire for dragonform too (I've only used it with a drac so no need to bother there).

Good luck!

Dragon Form is a terrible spell if you are not a draconian. It destroys your EV and will get you killed.

What makes dragon form a good/better spell for draconians? They get bonuses in it?

Draconians cast it as a pure transmutations spell, instead of transmutations/fire. This has the effect of allowing a draconian transmuter to cast it off of the transmutations skill they'd be using for Blade Hands anyway, instead of pumping a MASSIVE amount of xp into fire, which they haven't touched all game and is probably getting a cross-training penalty because of the ice skill for Ice Form.

They also get a wizardry bonus to that specific spell and turn into a special dragon type unique to their draconian subrace (yellow is particularly good), but this pales in comparison to not having to pump up fire skill from scratch.

Re: CIP: Spider Blade Cat of the Maid :3

Heh, I've gotten pretty far with a FeTm of Sif before. It got reallly boring after a while for some reason and I just ended up suiciding the poor kitty. It's true that you will start to feel your squishiness later on in melee; alligators biting huge chunks of hp off of me were a problem in Swamp. I even had statue form castable but was still taking too much damage. So you should probably branch out into other magic, maybe summoning because of the apt bonus (also because I am slightly biased and just won a summoner DsWz :P )You might also try Conj; I won an 11 runer FeVM conjurer, who incidentally was also able to use a few forms himself later on.

Also, am I the only one who finds the image of 'Legendary deck of summoning (in mouth)' utterly adorable?
