CIP: 10-rune Pale DrGl of TSO

Hey guys,

Here I have by far my strongest character ever: A level 27 Pale Draconian Gladiator of The Shining One. My next closest characters were a successful 3-rune (standard runes) DDBe of Trog and a failed 5-rune (serpentine, barnacled, silver, slimy, iron) Red DrGl of TSO. So far on this Pale DrGl, I have all the runes except for the 4 pan lord runes and the demonic rune.

I've never been in Pan before, so I would like some help. Is it like the Hells at all? Are there as many tormenting Fiends as in the Hells? Are the pan lord tougher? I know at least Cerebov is.

Is nutrition a problem? I have Fast Metabolism 1. Also, should I be prepared for all kinds of elemental damage? I'm actually rather limited in my resistance choices; I'm mostly relying on standard rings and a robe of resistance (been getting mostly everything except resistances on ALL my randarts). I have rN+++ of course, but no rPois (not a problem probably). My rElec comes from a scimitar which I would rather not sue in place of my Eudemon Blade.

Finally, what wands should I bring? And what potions?

In general, Pan is a cakewalk compared to Hell. There are foo fiends in Pan, much like in Hell, but unlike in Hell they don't constantly spawn right on top of you while you're trying to rest from the last fight. The Pan Lords are marginally harder than the Hell Lords, but they die just the same to angelspam. Eight or so angels will kill nearly anything quite easily, and even if you get unlucky you can whack imp spawns across the level for a bit and get all that piety back in practically no time at all.

Not that there's any point in fighting the Pan Lords, mind you. It's faster just to Blink past. Controlled Blink is a good spell to pick up as soon as possible, and you'll probably want to wear your ring of teleport control for your entire visit so you can make abusive levels of use out of regular semi-controlled Blink. Virtually any risky situation in Pan can be trivialized by spamming semi-controlled Blink repeatedly until you're out of sight.

The main risk in Pan is your entry point on a new level. It's entirely random in the level, and unfortunately that means you can be dropped right inside the Rune vault. As you might imagine, this is usually heavily guarded. Sometimes it drops you right onto Hellion Island, or right next to Cerebov. Keep a well-charged wand of teleportation on you at all times, and buff up before going through any portals. If you get a bad spawn point it's usually better to teleport to a remote location rather than fighting it out, possibly returning later when you're properly prepared, but it does depend on your resources on-hand.

The other main risk in Pan is random Pan Lords. They're usually weaklings, but don't let that lure you into a sense of complacency. Their spells are random, and that means they sometimes spawn with top-tier spells. Controlled Blink will save you in such situations if you use it fast enough, and if at any point you get the sense that a level is potentially dangerous do not hesitate to bail out through a portal to the next level. There will be plenty of demons to kill for xp and loot to gather on the next level, no point getting obsessive about any one squad of the infinite demons.

Pan levels have pretty much normal floor trash. This includes lots of food, so you probably needn't worry much about that. Just start with a decent-sized stack of rations in case you get a low-generation streak, and eat whatever you gather. You shouldn't have any troubles. On the flip side, Pan doesn't have much in the way of particularly good loot, either. The Rune vaults occasionally have one to four pieces of higher-quality loot, but by this point in the game it would need to be exceptional to be worthy of notice and you'll be unlikely to have any use for it.

If you have a book with Haste, learn it.

There is no reason to be training unarmed combat unless you're planning to discard your eudemon blade and go bare-handed. The extra auxiliary attacks will provide less additional damage than you would get by training long blades past minimum weapon delay.

From my experience, Divine Warriors take a humongous amount of piety to cast. 8 Angels x 6 piety each = 25% of max piety. Also, I was not aware that training weapon school increases damage... I thought it only affected accuracy. In that case, I better pump it ASAP.

Yes, that's right. And it erases Cerebov in the process. Piety gains for TSO in Pan are so high that you will literally gain most of that piety back just walking to the exit portal, mashing tab against anything that gets in your way. There is no reason to bother holding back.

Weapon skill gives you three major bonuses: accuracy, damage, and speed. Weapon speed is the biggest and most important of the three, which is why you'll often hear advice to train up to 'minimum delay' and then turn off your weapon skill. Once you've hit the speed cap, you're only getting two of the three bonuses from further increases, and the one that you are losing is also the biggest. So you might as well pump xp into other skills instead, quite a lot of the time.

However, the accuracy and damage bonuses are still significant, and you've developed your skills so much that most of the skills competing for your attention have also hit their point of diminishing returns. That xp has to go somewhere, after all.

Oh god, I died, and out of my frustration I played so many failed games afterwards that I pushed the morgue file completely out of my character records page.

Just fyi, I was fighting Cerebov, and I summoned like 5 angels, but then he firestormed and they ALL died in a couple of turns. Stupidly, I forgot to Controlled-Blink out of there, thinking I could finish him off with my Cleansing Flames. I used up my potion of magic and got him down to Almost Dead status, when he started piling on the summons. Stupidly again, I decided to save my mana for another Cleansing Flame instead of abjuring those Shadow Fiends and Executioners. Needless to say, I died, and what a shame... just 1 rune away from my 15-runer.

Well, at least I learned a lot from this run about the post endgame.

Next time you fight Cerebov, don't do it in the open since that just gives all summons opportunity to attack you at once; in addition don't damage him with Cleansing Flame, only do that when you need to clean up summons (or Abjure them in 0.9, or Mass Abjure in 0.10); also, you were hasted but died with an unused potion of might in your inventory, I think? These are all major strategical or tactical problems. The fight wouldn't have been to challenging if you had avoided them. Better luck next time!

While it is nice to have killed Cerebov some time, it is a lot easier to just grab the rune. Even on a zero stealth character, distract with some summons and just run past.
