Ha! Happened to me last week, too. I was trying to avoid a hydra in Lair:6 at low health and BOOM: 'You fall through a shaft!'. Then my MuWz was mauled by a pack of yaks and frogs...

Happened to me twice - I fell through a shaft from D:8 to D:10, managed to evade all the hill giants and yak packs chasing me, got back to D:8 and fell down a shaft to D:11. :lol:

shafts are fairly easy to spot if you have a couple levels of traps and doors...I'd level it up to 5 or so very early on, then turn it off for a while and get up to 12 or so later on.

Usually, I postpone T&D until I get to Zot trap depths.. I'm starting to reconsider that now since shafts can, ehem, shaft you just as bad as Zot traps. What's worst is that I could have easily escaped both of those situations, what with those teleport scrolls burning a hole in my inventory screaming "CLICK THIS YOU IDIOT" But of course, like all of the emergency situations I've been in, I panic and do crazy things instead. Those types of situations seem to be about 90% of my YASDs actually

I think the real challenge of Crawl comes from knowing how to escape these near death predicaments like these. I really ought to get in the habit of just ctrl+s'ing as soon as I get into the red in a seemingly doomed scenario so that I don't immediately go into panic mode; give time to think things over and then load up once I've calmed down and can form a coherent escape strategy. Oh well. Could haves, should haves, etc etc.

Shafts are one of the best trap types (and a reason why I don't like the proposal to scrap traps altogether): out of nothing, they can create interesting situations.

This. Do a character dump and look at your options offline. It's actually a great time to post your predicament to the Tavern!

I agree with dpeg: shafts, while incredibly dangerous, are great. A lot of my crawl improvement has come from learning to deal with shafting's dire emergencies while remaining calm and assessing what I've got. It's definitely a 'burn resources' kind of situation.

Note also that running around encumbered is a good way to get shafted, both literally and figuratively. The chance of falling through a shaft increases with weight carried. I have no idea if the numbers in the wiki are still correct, but it means that most races have about a 36% chance of not falling when you first walk over the trap assuming you're not carrying anything else. The more you carry, the more likely you are to fall unless you detect the trap first.

As a newcomer to Crawl (just started playing a couple months ago), I love shafts. They have been a source of many, many deaths but also some of my best moments in the game as I utilize every trick I have to get out of a really bad situation**. I also try to have T&D up a few levels as soon as I can spare some points to help.

**used to spam buttons and die horribly until I learned how to stop and look at my scrolls and wands... those magic mapping and fog scrolls are your best friends.

Indeed, I used to never level T&D because it 1. I didn't feel the need to and 2. It was such a pain to level because of repetitive trap disarming. But now with the new exp system it's incredibly easy to train, and you should always have it focused so it takes 10-20% of your exp. I find that getting 10 level is enough for the whole game, you'll detect more than 60% of the Zot traps out there before you step on them.

Plus, shafts can in fact be _very_ useful at times. Consider finding two of them in Hell and getting from the Vestibule to the bottom floor in about 100 turns. Talking from my own experience.
