Looking back on it, the character started with a remarkably good skillset for a more spell focused hybrid (Book of minor magic, blowgun, and a dozen poison needles), but the melee direction has worked out surprisingly well so far. The first couple levels were rather entertaining, though, as I started with no skill in maces and flails. Meph rarely saw any use, though, as by the time I had it castable, the only times I would've found it useful would've been against mobs that would've easily resisted.
With my combat skills at their current levels (And they've been there for a while now), I've been working towards developing the escape mechanisms that I'll be needing when shit hits the fan. The problem, however, is that I'm unsure of what to do after I finally get controlled blink castable. My defensive stats are absolute shit, so one potential option is to work on ice magic for a bit. That, however, then has the restriction that I can't use anything beyond swamp dragon armor without shooting myself in the foot (-2EV cap on Ozo's).
So, first formal question: Does TSO's shield buff work in either of the two following cases: While using a two hander (unlikely from the wording on Hanzell) or when using the condensation shield spell (Also a bit doubtful, but it doesn't hurt to ask)?
Another rather amusing, but not particularly viable option, is to work towards the ring of flames spell and offset the rF- by wearing some ice dragon armor (Got two hides and the spell already stashed). Probably hilariously entertaining, especially when combined with the ring of fire I left somewhere in the vaults, but offensive capabilities are not what the character currently lacks. Viability is even further reduced by the amount of experience I'd have to invest to get it castable.
So, beyond getting deflect, flight, insulation, and haste, I'm not quite sure what direction I should be moving towards. Should I just start investing heavily in the physical defense skills? Necromutation is another end game option, but before that, I need to decide on my end game god choice. I've done well by Makhleb so far, but, at this point in the game, the only skill of his that I use is the free hp/mp on kills. The destruction abilities were phased out once I started coming across large rock throwing mobs and I'm at the point where I don't want to be relying on luck for my summons. It's not even that the minor demons are a direct threat, but when one spawns hostile, it could easily burn up my scrolls or give me some fucked up mutation before I'm able to land my first, and usually only, necessary hit. With that being said, however, that hp on kill is still *well* worth worshiping him as my god awful defenses necessitate as much hp regeneration as possible, and hp on kill is great when you're able to one shot most mobs.
As hinted at earlier, TSO is high up on the list of potential end game gods. He is not without his drawbacks when compared to Makhleb, however. The wording on Hanzell leads me to believe that he does not always grant hp/mp on the killing of evil mobs, which is probably the ability most central to my character's survival up until this point. He also eliminates the possibility of using necromutation for torment immunity along with a handful of the other useful spells in that line (Regeneration, dispel undead, probably some others that I've forgotten about). If the shield ability ends up being useless for a gsc using ogre, that'd be yet another reason not to worship him as I'm really hurting on defense.
Fedhas would be pretty damn hilarious, but again, viability is the issue and I have no experience with him, let alone feeling comfortable with using him during the late game.
Really it all ultimately boils down to the following: What the hell should I work towards that will help increase my survivability?
As far as dungeon clearing goes, I'm considering rummaging through the leather armor drops from the mine and hoping I find one with rPois. Once acquired, I should steamroll through the hive and then feel ready for the elven halls. Still not fully comfortable in the halls, though, as I lack portal projectile, abjuration (In a shop, 2100gp), and controlled blink isn't castable yet. I might clear out up through Swamp:4 before doing the halls, but I really need the loot from Elf:5.
Most notable encounter so far: After being Abyssed from a Zot trap, I ended up in a situation where I hopped out of the frying pan and into the fire. While doing the typical dodging of all but the smallest of mobs (1500gp was never so well spent, <3 swiftness), I was in a situation where I was fleeing from a Balrog and easily another dozen or so lower (But still dangerous, especially the damn mutations and smiting) demons and ran smack into a pack of golden eyes. Note that this was before I got the MR cloak from a trove. Needless to say, my first action was to try and quaff a healing potion to cure the confusion, but that proved fruitless as my terrible MR meant that I got confused again immediately after. After entering panic mode for a bit and spamming my potions of heal wounds (And not fully keeping up with the damage being dealt), I ended up quaffing a potion of invisibility and found myself unable to be targeted by the golden eyes. Confusion wore off in a couple of rounds and I was able to read a scroll and get the hell out.
