CiP - spell slinging rookie DECj

I've only played burly heavy armor type fighters, mostly MDDK's I was feeling that I was limited on those by getting lucky and finding good equipment before I got too deep so I decided to change it up completely and give squishy spell slingers a try. I've now got this DECj running around and I have no idea what is worth it for spells, what is 'essential', what skills should be given priority. I've seen a couple more bookstores so I can check if I have access to a particular spell but I probably do. I've gotten all of the book gifts from Vehumet, is he worth sticking with or is bailing the better option?
I feel like I don't even know what the right questions to ask are so just ask for help in general. I think I'm getting the hang of limiting engagement and pulling back when there is too much, but I still find times when I'm out of MP with an enemy or two left and I have to turn and run like a little girl (or a really squishy caster).

I guess my broad questions if you need something more focused to answer would be: how high does Evo need to be to make the crystal ball a reasonable MP replenishment tool? Should I be pumping Spell, Conj, Ice, or some secondary school? What parts of what branches should I be able to handle with my current equipment? What should I be looking for both for spells to learn and types of items to acquire?

Pick up a buckler ASAP and train Shields to 5. It gives you an extra chance to block incoming hits. It will hinder melee attack with staves though (you're just holding that staff of cold for the boost right?).
Personally I don't like the crystal ball - you need very high Evo for it to be useful, and you have not much use for Evo. I'd go for Sublimation of Blood if you can find the spell.
Other useful spells to learn if you find the book - Flight, Swiftness, Haste, Dig
Your Conjurations look high enough for the time being. Push up Ice and aim to get Ice Storm castable.
Turn on Spellcasting - it gives you more MP & spell slots.
Turn off T&D when you reach 10 - it should be good enough for the whole game

Honestly spellwise all you're missing is control blink, deflect missiles, swiftness, and haste. You need swiftness ASAP in case you're abyssed. Don't even start thinking about ice/firestorm until you're level 23 or so, and don't expect to cast it till you're already in zot, or lower vaults. I think with vehumet you can get away with having 19 or so in each of conj and ice, but expect a bunch of miscasts.

As far as evocations and crystal balls, I always go sif muna so I don't really know. I do know 12 or so is a bare minimum, and that you should probably use staff of energy for most cases, probably exclusively if you don't have any potions of magic or escape scrolls.

On abandoning Vehumet: as long as you have abjuration for his summons, and can survive an abyssing, his wrath is pretty insubstantial. I switched from him to TSO after clearing all of the branches except for Crypt & Tomb on my KeCj and survived to win a 15 runer. So if you are able to clear all the branches down to the endings, you should do fine with getting rid of Vehumet. Just make sure you have abjuration and swiftness to survive the summons/abyss.

I've had Firestorm at XL 15 with +5 INT and wizardry. It wasn't optimally played and had a bit of luck, of course, but it goes to show that XL 23 (and Conj/Ice 19) isn't really an exact value especially with Deep Elves... and with 19 each success will be Great or Excellent depending on INT and wizardry boosts.
If I'd actually want to reliably win I'd go Bolt of Cold/Freezing Cloud > Haste > Controlled Blink > Ice Storm though, and wouldn't leave out a melee option and Dodging/Fighting along the way either. Depending on book drops the order might change slightly, of course; getting both Haste and Controlled Blink early on would be a stroke of luck.

When using the ball of energy, always watch out that your MP is reasonably high. It's a very bad idea to attempt to channel up MP from scratch with it; for that use a staff of channeling or optimally Wucad Mu. 15 Evocations or so would be good and also helps with using a staff of cold, so it's two birds with one stone.

Well, thank you for checking; I myself was too hasty to check all of them. Abjuration should be failing on the greater demons as well as the tentacles. Did you get any of those?

Woops, yeah tested it again this time waiting for 1s, and abjuration does not work on them. Doesn't work for the abominations, either. So anyway, as long as you can survive/escape tier 1 demons :? , you should be set on abandoning Vehumet

I agree with greepsih and cerebovssquire. If you have Swift and Flight, get those asap. With that combo, you will outrun most threats. Haste and Deflect huge too. Then aim for C Blink -- before then, you can use a CTel ring or the spell to do semi-controlled blinks which is plenty good.

I'd turn off Traps now and turn on Fighting. You are squishy enough as is. Anything to boost hp helps.

I'd ditch Iron Shot since you already have IMB and OOD for single target direct damage. I'd get Poison Cloud. It does wonders against humanoid uniques. With Poison Cloud, you can clear Elf. (Which you should do for xp and loot.)

If you find Clarity, memorize Intoxication. It allows you to disable all humanoids in LOS w/o fail. Use it to turn Elf 5 and Vault 8 into a cakewalk. :twisted:

Consider swapping out Wizardry for Goruxtenn. See if that extra couple pts of INT keeps your success at high levels. It should get all your spells to 0 or near 0 hunger (and boost their power).

Channel staff is better for MP recovery when you are out. C Ball works OK though. Just don't use it at low MP. Get your Evoc to about 10=15 and activate it when you are about 1/2 out of MP. And don't do it in combat. Basically, train yourself to back off when you are about half out of MP. Never let it get down to 0.
