Head of Lettuce SpVM - Now YAVP!

So I decided to try rolling up a Spriggan Venom Mage. Only my second spriggan ever and now I have 4 runes. I have only had 1 scary situation so far, and have been breezing through just about everything. Slime pits was pathetically easy for all the horror stories I've heard about it. Had 0 trouble in Shoals and Swamp, Vault was a cake walk as well. Now I'm wondering if I should pump up some summoning then head to Tomb, or drop into the Abyss for a bit. If I manage to get the Abyssal and Tomb runes I'd probably consider doing Hell and Pan. I've already cleared out Zot.

My question is, what should I be pumping up at this point?

I have spell books holding pretty much any spell i'd ever need. I have yet to find a single manual of anything.

I've also got a Trove asking for 17 scrolls of identify. I've never been to the hells, or pan before and I'm sorta scared to go to either.

You might want to build for necromutation for tomb? Or some way to summon lots of allies to absorb the curses. Otherwise, be very slow and cautious. Also IMO this is one of the most dangerous parts of the game, and can be worse than Pan depending on class/religion.
I agree that slime is not hard for a fast mage and if you don't do something dumb. :) If you're unlucky with eyes, lack rMut, or are playing a melee class without artifact armor, it can be a deathtrap.
Do you have a better buckler?

I've actually just lost 2 characters around that 4-5 rune point with Zot clear, so you might not want to listen to me. :lol:

The buckler I'm wearing is the only one I have that has any kind of ego on it. I've found 4 or 5 artifact shields of various types... just no artifact bucklers.

I cleared most of Crypt:5, but ran into Khufu so I high tailed it. I can cast Shadow Creatures at excellent.

I did all of Slime Pits without having Rmut... didn't run into any of the mutating enemies there, so I kept my resist corrosion amulet on. Most everything that I ran into there was sleeping at first so I'd just sneak and stab em. i could have stabbed the Royal Jelly as well, but I knew I wouldn't 1shot it so I cast freezing cloud and OOD a couple times, then cleared up the things it spawned. Acid Blobs were a little annoying though, but they went down fast under concentrated fire. Got a bunch of nice loot there including almost all the magic staves, and a few artifact rings. But the artifact rings were mostly junk.

I wish I'd have found the Alchemists Hat, it's been on the head of each of my winning characters and on the head of none of the losers.

The character I rolled up b4 this one was a TrMo named Fleshrender Gut Feaster. He died one D4 without seeing the temple. So I followed my generic naming scheme. Make awesome named character and die. Then make ridiculously named char and win.

Well, I'd still put that name in the "awesome" category; it gave me a big laugh. :)
Just to add a couple of things:

Shadow creatures is great in Zot, but crappy in Tomb. (IME) You might want another summoning spell, but watch out for greater Mummies just abdjuring your whole army.
You'll need one of the "big gun" level 9 spells soon. Ice storm is nice, and given your skills looks reasonable.
Hells are mostly easy, because you can escape immediately by going upstairs. However, getting paralyzed can be an instadeath, and the last levels have big groups, no cTele and a nasty boss.
As a Spriggan, you probably learned that you don't have to kill everything long before I did! ;)
You've already got OOD, which is one of my favorites. You can probably lose poisonous cloud too...
Pan is easier in some ways, because you don't have the Hell effects, but it's easier to get ground down and die by attrition, or by having the bad luck to appear in the middle of a deadly vault.
I like your current idea of wandering the Abyss for a while first too.

My approach, next time I get to where you are, will be to have lots of summons, one of ice/fire storm castable, then to stairdip into the hells for XP (which I think is faster than the Abyss, but less loot until the bottom), but to try Pan before the Hell ends.

Would stasis protect against the Paralysis hell effect?

Side note: I am now sitting on top of about 10k gold. LOL.

I've got EVERY spell book in the game now... which makes having Sif as a god kinda pointless right? Was thinking I'd switch to one of the gods that rewards kills with HP/MP gain... so that leaves... what Vehumet and Mahkleb and TSO... heh...

Yes, Stasis works.

Vehumet doesn't reward demon kills, take that into consideration. Also, Sif Muna's channeling abilities are still useful. A switch to Makhleb, or TSO if you're not poisoning much anymore, is an option though.

Freezing is the best brand, generally; Vorpal, Draining and Venom are bad choices at this stage of the game. However, Flaming is an option especially if your main source of magical damage is cold-based (an alternative form of elemental attack against rC, rF- enemies).

I was gonna pick up Bolt of Fire to remove that particular hole in my offenses. I've got Necromutation up and running, Haunt, Shadow Creatures, Ice Storm, Ice Cloud(which is getting only situation use now), and some utility spells.

If only there was a spell for electric branding a weapon, well Freezing it is then. I guess I'll toss something else on the other Qblade i just picked up when I find another scroll.

Side Note: this character feels like a god damn monster.

I have been wanting to pick up another lvl 9 big gun spell, and with how much I'd have to raise fire for Fire Storm to be an option at this juncture I was thinking I'd pick up Tornado. I am a little torn though, as most things tend to stand up to LRDing very very well at this point and I seldom get good damage with it so I was thinking shatter might be interesting to have, as I could potentially use it to knock down walls blocking my path which LRD is terrible at that unless they are rock in which case I just dig them anyways.

What are your thoughts on the matter?

Also on a side note: Darkness sounds like something that might be fun to play around with in the Abyss on a spiggan.

Am about to head into The Hells now having cleared the Vestebule and whomped Geryon's butt heartily. I think I've got all my bases covered resistance wise and I've got 2 wands of healing & a teleport wand as well as a way to both blink and ctele. If I lose this character to a stupid mistake there I am probably going to rage at myself for days.

In a word: redundant. Skills that would be much more useful include Fighting since it's possible to get decent HP on a spriggan with high Fighting.
A possible exception would be if you want to do Ziggurats, in which case adding Tornado could help. If you're normally allruning it's quite a bad idea.

Note that even if you got Fire Storm castable at low Fire Magic, it's probable that the power (and damage) will be bad.

I got bored for a bit and decided to grab all 7 potions of mutation I'd found and quaff em all in one go as I had 6 cure mutation potions to get rid of anything annoying. that resulted in getting these mutations... I ended up with 0 bad mutations out of the deal. I think that's pretty good for a mutation roulette. i could have done better but now I want to find more potions of mutation LOL.

Well, I ascended. Closest call I had the entire game came inside a Zig on an Orc level that was basically ALL warlords, smiters, and sorcerors. Was down to 1hp at one point.

Being my first 15 runer, as well as my first caster to have ever gotten anywhere past the start of Lair I have to say it was enjoyable.

I decided to make a screenshot on 1st floor with all of the Artifacts and such I found the entire game(barring those I didn't pick up in the Abyss, Pan, and the Ziggurat.) I used Sif Muna's artifact book gifts to create the outer ring. Around my chosen exit I made a circle of the unrands I gathered, and the four books inside the circle are the Necronomicon, Grand Grimoire, Book of Anihilations and another book called 'The Papyrus on Yeast.' I felt it deserved to be inside the circle because I was drinking a beer when I found it.

What's an easy combination to play to learn how to play fighters well? Is it the TrBe/KoBe that I see a lot of mentions or is there a better "training wheels" fighter?

(I know this looks off topic but it sounded like there were a few people, like the OP and above poster, who play fighters more)

TrBe/KoBe/MiBe/HaBe are solid choices, CeMo/TrMo/MiMo are also very good. Especially before the recent Elyvilon nerf, MiHe/CeHe/TrHe make great unarmed healers.
Fi in general isn't too great a start because they have nothing special. If you want to go Okawaru or something, Gl or Ar are probably better choices.

For a training wheels approach to melee chars I'd have to say Minotaurs are pretty darn good, though I am biased as a MiBe was my first win.

When I first started I tried a little bit of each class and managed to splat quite nicely a number of times. I have yet to die to Sigmund or Grinder though. Best splat was in less than 100 turns, ran into a group of mobs that all had something to throw at me and they all hit simultaneously. was kinda funny, but I don't think I can get to that Morgue file... dumb Win 7 won't let me get at it. If I go into Linux i could dig it out, but it's not worth it.

Also: this game took close to 3 days because I kept getting distracted and wandering off with the game still open.
