Yes, I am completely a caster. The staff of channeling was what I got the first time I asked for an aquirement staff. The second time I asked I got a staff of wizardy. I am guessing staves of earth do not exist in this game. As a DD that amulet is pure gold since it keeps my piety up despite the heals.

But on to the story....

So Orc is entierly explored, save for one bubble I dug to down on Orc 4 (love the DD sense surroundings). I went in there earilier, saw Nick and hightailed it out before he saw me. However, now I have statue form with its built in rElec, and I want to find elf. Unfortunatly, just after going though the tunnel I run into Louise.

Normally Louise is not really a problem for me, since I have been playing He Hybrids. I would however fill the tunnel with poison gas and swiftly run away, however that is not an option for this sturdy EE. I try to burn her down with a couple of iron shots, and quickly switch to stone arrow when I realise my mana will run out faster than her hps.

Just as I realise this I relearn why she is to be feared.....she banishes me. I take stock of my situation. Unlike every other time I have been banished I have no source of swiftness or leviation, and my only telport is a wand. Oh, and I am at half health, and hungry, and I forgot to replenish food last time I was at my stash. I begin to dispair, but bravely head commence wandering. As I run from a bone dragon I remember why I normally try to memorize levatate since water pools are anoying. A little more wandering and suddenly there is a an exit! Out of food, and very hungry I dart through and try to make it back to my stash to get a snack. (orc and lair are on the same dungon level in this game).

Remember how I mentioned that I had to dig a tunnel to get to this bubble? Oh yeah, Louise is in it. I fire off the wand of teleport and try to run away. The same turn the teleport goes off, I go back off to the abyss.

Time to take stock. In the abyss, out of food, and oh, near starving... Well this has been a fun experiment. As a try to run, a nexiqual give me blurry vision, and detioration 2....did I mention that I was DD and stat damage does not heal naturally :( Even more amusing I see the silence aura of an angel. As I run, I fire off a teleport and try not to get killed.

Happily I teleport away before I get too hurt, right into a pathway in a lake of fire, but at least there is no foes around. I am nearly starving, and about 30% health. Time to use my wand of healing a couple of times. Once I get back to health I realise that I am trapped on this island without levitation. No worries, I still have teleports. Off I blip, to a different part of the same lake of fire.... However as I explore I see, another exit!

Off I run, only to discover that there is a stone wall blocking the only path thought the lava. There I am, 4 steps from the exit, nearly starving, out of food, and I cannot reach it.

Ah, I may not be able to fly, but as an EE I can go THROUGH the wall. I cast LRD, success! A giant blast, one or two more like that and away I'll go. I try to cast again and....nothing. Because of my low(er) int and spellcasting, LRD still has choko hunger, and I just went to starving....

Not being willing to give up yet I start chugging potions, hey they give a trivial amount of nutrition. while I do this, the noise of the first casting has attracted an ice devil and air elemental. I just keep chugging until I go back to "near-starving". Cast, boom, chug, chug. I am down to nothing but potions of berzerking and speed. neither of which I feel will help me in the starving department. One last cast blows up the wall, and the poor ice devil who though it would be a good idea to stand next to it while he chewed on me.

Off I dash though the portal, to find myself back in Orc 4, starving, out of food, and I still have to get through Louise. Wait, I teleported as I was banished, and I am on the far side of the level, and right near the shopping mall. Although there are no general goods or food stores, there is a potion shop. I stumble in and buy every potion that won't actually kill me before making it to my stash.

The potions got me all the way back to the dungon level before went back to starving so I only passed out once before I made it back to my stash. Snozcumber never tasted so good. It also took 2 of my 3 potions of cure MUT to get rid of the deterioration, but I REALLY hate that one as a DD.

I am thinking it may be a bit before I decide to try going to elf again. Oh and since I am strong enough, I think I will try to carry a bit more food (normally I take 2-3 rations, but now I think 8-9 is better).

It is worth noting that this guy takes a lot of food. My only winning character was a Ko zerker and compaired to the zerker this guy eats A LOT, easily twice as much or more. Happily I was able hit the hive and found 3 different bee vaults. The issue is that due to the low(er) int and spellcasting apt my spells have hunger for much longer. When combined with the fact that every time I have to heal it eats a ton of nutrition he is always hungry. Let me put it this way. He probably ate half of the snake pit as he went about clearing the first 3 levels.

I got banished with a DDEE of Elyvilon once while near starving without food. Very similar to what happened to you. Unfortunately, all I got was a Lugonu altar. I swapped out for him, and realizing it was over, suicided. Elyvilon worshipers are hungry bastards indeed! I have no clue how you got your piety that far up; mine never went past 3 stars for all the heal spamming I did.

Great recovery. I always dedicate two slots to permafood (1 ration slot of 3+ and one snack slot of ymy choko types for in-combat snacking) and one to restore abilities (usually potion though alternately royal jellies to replace the ration slot). I drop my food far away when harpies appear. Chunks come and go from inventory ).

Normally I devote a couple of slots to food, but I had been dueling with Saint Rokka in Snake, and that burned up the 3 meat rations I had been carrying, and I forgot to replenish.

I have been wearing an amulet of faith since dungeon level 7 or so, that helps. As does sacraficing EVERY weapon I come across, esp ammo.

Well, shortly after making it out of the abyss I finally found a staff of earth and things got MUCH easier.

My Piety is low because I took off my amulet of faith for ZOT 5.

Some thoughts:

LRD is a as awsome as I thought it would be. Using Petrfy and LRD to make bombs probably was the most fun in the game.
LRD means never having to worry about skeletons, or golems
Iron/stone bolt....not so useful. I used sandblast -> stone arrow pretty much exclusively for damage until about halfway through and I got a staff of earth. With a DD's poor aptitude and lower int, it is rough. At the first post I had almost stalled out because of low damage.
I pretty much never used iron shot. By the time I could afford to cast it I had the staff of earth and had better options. also, it is quite rough to have a highish miss chance when you can only afford to cast 1-3 spells, even if it only takes 2 good hits to kill a foe.
This was the first time I have ever found a shield of resistance. It was good to have with statue form.
It annoys me that if you want to kill stuff with magic, you basically HAVE to raise conjurations. that may have lead to my issues with the bolt spells, but I don't think the DD is really suited to be a pure caster.
It would be nice if you could find portals (i.e. trove or zig) via the find command.
Yes, a staff of channeling is nice.
A troll zerker might need more food, but I doubt it.

I am going to try this varient again, but as a DD hunter instead of EE. Bascially I want to stack up damage shaving with high armor. We'll see what happens.

I used Evylion as an after battle healer mainly, I don't think this character is endgame viable because you run out of stacks of ammo to sacrafice.
However, having high Invocations and Evlyion means never having to fight the following, annoying monsters, ever:
Spiny toads
Hydra
Half of the pack of Yaks (even death yaks)
Aligators
Dragons (really any dragon, but I find shadow and quicksilver the worse) I never had to face a shadow dragon, but I did watch them fight Titans on the way to the exit :twisted:
shapshifters (once they swap to a beast shape)
it was nice to do a once shot minor healing to pull moths of wrath out of the equation in zot, without spending piety.
It was also fun to turn every 3rd elephant, yak, or bee, neutral and watch them duke it out.

It would be nice if you could find portals (i.e. trove or zig) via the find command.

The ctrl-o screen will show them, should be good enough?
