I enjoy a classic as much as the next chap, and it doesn't get much classicer than a dwarf fighter!

Just finished annihilating the Lair and the Hive. This guy crushes most things in his way, and having learned from previous fighters if I'm not sure I'm just cheesing it the other way (a wise choice when I suddenly found myself facing a fire giant. Eep!)

Pretty sure my skill set could be more polished. I was hoping to branch into some magic at some point, but I'm not entirely sure how.

All advices appreciated.

I'm kinda short on advice seeing as I struggle to get through the mid-game but I have to say this: "NICE!". I mean, boots of running, rings of slaying... Pure ownage. This might sound weird but on the 1 year or so I've been playing DC:SS I have NEVER picked boots of running or levitation or whatever, only the stealth ones with the ninja face icon in tiles.

If it were me, I'd shoot for the 25 mark in shields to get more SH and more importantly get rid of the -5 dmg of the large shield penalty. Although maybe that's a bit far. But that's what I'd do.

I've had some amazing luck so far. Chug IDing a pot of mutation and getting clarity and no severe penalties to balance it out... That was a treat.
Rupert nearly beat me down first time I met him. Came back a bit later. The angry bastard couldn't handle a finessed, hero'd, double slaying ring wielding dorf though!

@TehDruid - I've never seen boots of running except the time I miracled them up in wizmode to see if they had been removed from the game

@AB - If you can replace the Whip of Flame with Whip of Electrocution you'd have solid offense until you can find a Demon Whip.

You can safely turn off Invocations as well - If you are planning on switching to TSO you should wait till 12 then turn it off. All that Invo does for you as an Oka worshipper is increase success of Hero and Finesse - 11 is plenty for both to be at Excellent.

You can probably turn off Evocations as well - Check your evocables success rates and if they are at Great or better you're golden.

I'd recommend bumping one of your ranged skills up to 7 (at 8 you get showered with ammo gifts, you can do it if you want).

You can use the experience from Invo/Evo to kickstart Shields and Armour up to higher levels for even more defense and Fighting for even more HP.

You might also consider pushing Spellcasting a bit to help get some low-level buffs up and running (Swiftness is great for melee and not too costly XP wise) - Swiftness, Repel Missiles, Levitation, Blink, and Regeneration are all very handy spells that don't take a whole lot of skill to get castable.

On the advice of you gents, I've turned off inv and evo, quickly levelled crossbows to 7 and turned on spellcasting.

Snake pits are cleared, and the rune is in hand, with only a couple of minor shrieks of terror when mages critically poisoned me through my resistance and when the walls were painted red by a particularly brutal glaive attack on my person.

I've decided to hit up Shoals next, which I've never done before. As such I'm in constant terror of losing this, by my standards, exceptionally successful character.

Got mesmerised, but it didn't seem to do anything.

Suggestions? Advice?

When you're mesmerised, you cannot move away from the creature. It gets really dangerous when there're nasty enemies around (javelineers, for example); you want to retreat but you can't. Scroll of Noise can help you break mesmerization. High MR also protects you from it somewhat.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, so sorry in advance, but see what happened to my mummies so far tonight;

MuFi 1 Trog. Got the axe fixedart, "Arga". Got banished by Erolcha (first time it happens to me actually)
MuFi 2 Oka. The one that got the boots. Was actually going very well till I decided that my awesome l33t skillz with Okawaru were good enough to enter the spider nest safely. Died by a pack of Tarantellas and Wolf Spiders, while confused, by the last wolf spider (I couldn't outrun them even with the boots). I wish I had clarity that moment, seriously.
MuFi 3 Oka. Was also going very well with a whip of lightning and another of fire just in case. Died by Rupert in Lair:1 who was wielding a Triple Sword of Elec. He went berserk, I just could pop Oki Hero, I did and started nuking him with all my wands. Emptied Lighting and Drain... He finished me with 30 dmg. And I had almost 17 shield skill with Hero on so I blocked a lot of hits... Little fun fact; Found a +1, +0 demon trident on D:11.

Shoals was a walk in the park. Things are getting a bit gnarly now though. Got to Elf 4 without a lot of trouble. Left Elf 5 for later and opted to hit up the vaults, which required running like hell from a Titan guarding the entrance and circling around after a battle that was NOT going to end well.
Now that I'm in everything was going just fine until Mara showed up.

This is a cat I've met before, although never with as high level a char as now, but he was a shit storm of trouble then so I cheesed it. Reckon I can take him? Any tips for doing so?

I don't know your current stats, so I can only guess if you could take him, but I DO know that Mara can be a lot of trouble for any character.

You should approach him equipped with a ration (or some other item that's worthless as a weapon), as that will nerf his clone of you when he creates it. Depending on how strong you are now, you might then be able to re-equip your normal weapon, use a speed potion/Hero/Finesse/might potion, and take him. Do your buffs AFTER he clones you, so your clone won't get them too, and do the speed potion first. Also remember that Mara has the same duplication trick the rakshasas have... you'll know you've killed his real self when you see the "Okawaru accepts your kill" message. Don't worry if he "misleads" you, it's not anywhere near as bad as outright confusion.

Or, alternately, you can just skip him if he's not standing in front of anything vital. It's not like you have to kill EVERYTHING...

Taking down Mennas is a VERY good sign.

Finish up Vault, but be advised (if you didn't already know) that Vault:8 is much more dangerous than the Vault levels above it. It'd be better if you had a source of rElec (as titans sometimes show up), so be careful.

Not that I wasn't cautious, but when executioners and fiends start coming in all I can do is run, and I can NOT run fast enough. Executioners aren't that bad for heavy armor melee. They don't have much HP at all. And sans Abjuration, the best way to deal with fiends is to kill them quickly.

Sorry to hear about this man. Shit just waits to happen around the corner in Crawl. Hellfire is a bitch from what I've read on the wiki. Rather ironic that 3 layers of fire resist can't protect you from it.

On another note, this post inspired me to play MDFi again. Hope I can bring a nice CiP in one of the following days.

For future reference, if you find a scroll of acquirement before you start learning spells, ask for a staff. You'll get a rod instead, and it might have Abjuration on it. That can help melee characters a lot with those annoying "Oh shit it just summoned a bunch of fiends and greater demons!" situations.
