YAVP - My first one!

Hey guys, I just started playing this game about a month ago whena friend found it and showed it to me, I've spent a ton of time trying lots of class/race combos and reading both the forums and wiki to have a chance, and eventually I decided to settle on trying for a victory with a "beginner" combo. I went MdFi of Okawaru and found it to be great, I made it to Zot for the first time, but ended up dead between two Ice Fiends in Zot:5. My next MdFi learned from this mistake, and I managed to win while my friend watched on in envy. I have since branched into other combinations, and I intend to do more than just a 3rune win in the future. Anyways, here is my winner:

You are agile (Dex +1).
Your mind is acute (Int +2).

I contribute my win to many factors, including the early boots of running, but also some decent Okawaru gifts, and especially the labyrinth I found. However, I did find myself wishing I had switched off of Okawaru later on, due to the frequent downgrades that he kept sending me that I didn't want to leave lying around, and the fact that I had no summons at all. Also, acquiring abjurations was very nice. Also, I don't know about anyone else, but I ALWAYS go in labyrinths, unless I don't have any permafood. There's almost always at least one nice thing in it, and I've only died to the minotaur once.

Great job man. I haven't even seen Zot yet and I've been playing since late 0.6, lol.

Curious about your ealy to mid game play style. I have had much more luck dumping the shield early on. Did you use missiles? Did you have any trouble fighting early on?

Re: YAVP - My first one!

Even though I know it's a bad habit, I don't really carry around darts or stones early on, I find throwing a bit too fiddly and very weak if you don't level it, so I mostly just lured everything to choke points to bash it, or stair pulled. Generally, with my shield on, I was durable enough that most melee and bow/dart using enemies couldn't hurt me too bad, and I made sure to level my shields pretty early so that my combat wouldn't be affected. I just preferred to be more defensive than try to go with a 2h weapon. I think MdFi offers a pretty easy early game (where you're hard to hurt), and decent mid-game(dependent on resists and weapons/armours you find) and a late-game (well, zot at least) that is easy or hard depending on what you've picked up and the tactics you use. I never felt too weak for any particular section, and even ancient liches didn't scare me too much due to high hp and an abjuration rod. I was pretty much always prepared to run away, though, the entire game, and I often spent a lot of time just trying to split groups up, especially in the dungeon levels that are all gnolls/dogs, or any of the bottom floors of branches.

Re: YAVP - My first one!

Awesome! The first one is the best, but like the others say, trying for 15 is a whole new kind of fun :)

I've never won with Okawaru :(
I am sure I played flawflessly. This was an utmost unfair death. -- gorbeh
