YASD DDCK - I really suck at this!

Man, I'm so pissed off. This has been probably my best character so far, and I died due to being stupid. As usual.

Things started out great. Found a +4 plate mail on D:2 and on D:3 or 4, I don't really remember, I killed a sky beast and from eating it's corpse I got Poison Resistance mutation. Pretty early on I also got that hand axe of venom which I used to clear out the Lair, the Hive, a nice chunk of the orcish mines (at least the parts where I could get to) and it was doing well, until in the Hive I found that +3,+6 war axe and switched to it instead. Thinking I was ready I went down to Swamp:5 and started hacking away and summoning greater servants whenever a hydra or a dragon appeared, however at what I assume was the entrance to the rune chamber a huge melee broke out between some of my demons and a bunch of swamp mummies, jellies, dragons and hydras and it seems some of them still managed to get trough the meatshield and reach me. Instead of doing the sensible thing and healing myself then teleporting the fuck away, I decided to try and summon a few more servants. The result of that is obvious.


This sort of shit happened way back with an Orc Priest I had too, except in the snake pit. I was relying too much on my small army, and when some of the enemies breached the defenses I was slaughtered before I even knew what hit me. I guess I should stop playing characters who can summon allies.

I just made it to Swamp:5 for the first time ever and boy is that rune chamber hellish. A dozen swamp dragons, a dozen hydras, and the Lernaean Hydra - look that puppy up for a shock. Luckily I am XL 22 and managed to escape.

I just did Swamp:5 yesterday and found a bunch of ice dragons and simulacra in the rune chamber. Not a swamp drake or hydra to be found! So ironically the rPois ring that I waited to find before doing Swamp was not much use!

There are 3 or 4 different rune vaults for Swamp:5 just to keep you on your toes.

For the ones full of clouds in the entrance (the ice and miasma variety), I've found that doing a lot of shouting around the stone walls on the outside really helps to draw the monsters out so that you can fight them without having to keep going back and forth through the clouds. It would also be a good use for Projected Noise.

Okay, what does Projected Noise actually do? I find the spell description rather lacking, or rather, it sounds like a party trick and nothing else.

You choose a point on the map, and it generates a big noise (30) on it. If you do it on the center of the map, it will wake almost the whole level.
<+Grunt> You dereference an invalid pointer! Ouch! That really hurt! The game dies...

Also you can draw the guardians of a Rune chamber out of their little fort. Many of them will go check out the noise, and some of them will start patrolling when they find nothing there. You can either pick them off a couple at a time, or you can run for the Rune when they're running back and forth between two oddly noisy locations.
