0.29 Tournament Character #5
With two consecutive disasters, I pray that the next randomly generated character has a good enough start. This character, which was a Human Fighter with a rapier as his weapon of choice, seemed promising enough. However, there were quite a few near-death moments as it cleared through the first 11 floors of the dungeon.
0.29 Tournament Attempts: Part 5-1
The early dungeon goes smoothly enough, as I find and dispatch Robin on D:2 with a poisoned needle and kiting, and wipe out her crowd with a potion of might. On D:4, I read-id scrolls of blinking, noise, teleportation, enchant armour (that I use on my boots), magic mapping, poison, identify (that I use to identify potions of curing), and amnesia. I discover that the temple is located there in an isolated area connected to a staircase on D:5. I run from an ice beast and managed to get another scroll of identify to identify potions of haste. I also run into Blork the orc, who I take out using a potion of might. I read-id a scroll of butterflies and kill a water moccasin on D:5 in single combat, and a black bear using a scroll of poison. I read-id a scroll of fear and identify potions of cancellation, and turn off Shields and Armour training to focus on getting a couple of points of Evocations online. Once at the temple, I choose Yredelemul as my god, and turn on Invocations training.
D:6 sees me run into Menkaure, who I evade. I read-id a scroll of silence, and run into trouble when a gnoll hits me repeatedly with a spear of venom that requires me to use 2 scrolls of blinking and 2 potions of curing to resolve the situation. After healing up, I quaff a potion of berserk rage and take out the gnoll. I then face a group of wights that force me to use a scroll of teleportation to get away from them and heal up. After killing some more gnolls, I get 3 scrolls of identify that I use to identify potions of resistance, attraction, and invisibility. I meet Eustachio and manage to slaughter him after getting him in a corridor and chipping away at him. Encountering Menkaure again forces me to use an escape hatch to D:7, where I find 3 scrolls of identify that I use to identify potions of ambrosia, and run into Pikel. To deal with him, I quaff a potion of invisibility and focus my strikes on him. I get a +1 scimitar from a wight below and make it my new main weapon. I use a scroll of teleportation to get out of being surrounded by wights, although I get heavily drained in the process. I get a +3 great sword of freezing from a wight, and set a new Long Blades training target for it. I find and identify a potion of degeneration, and read-id a scroll of immolation.
On D:8, I nearly lose my life to a two-headed ogre and use a scroll of fear to escape from it. After healing up and killing a group of kobolds, yaks and a kobold brigand, the two-headed ogre easily goes down to my army. I then go back to kill Menkaure on D:6, and enter D:9, where a horde of orc priests, a two-headed ogre, and a tengu warrior make things difficult for me. I use a potion of ambrosia, a wand of roots, a scroll of teleportation, and a scroll of magic mapping to escape back upstairs through an escape hatch. Once I heal, I read-id a scroll of vulnerability and make my way back to the tengu warrior. Once there, I quaff a potion of berserk rage to take it out. I use a wand of roots to kill the two-headed ogre, and clear the rest of the level with a sigh of relief, finding the randart +7 mace of the Secret Visions {vorpal, rPois Int+4} along the way. I clear a player ghost vault on D:6 so I can get an extra scroll of teleportation, although the cost was not worth it since I used my sole scroll of blinking to evade the unseen horror simulacrum that dealt a lot of damage with its blows. On D:10, I get and identify a potion of mutation. D:11 sees me run into Amaeon, prompting me to read a scroll of poison and use a wand of roots to weaken him enough to take him out in melee. It also had a treasure trove that required a +7 demon blade for entry. Clearing the level has a couple of tense moments thanks to facing one elemental of every kind, but my undead army was helpful here.
The next goal for this character is to clear the Lair of Beasts and D:12. Since my character’s only source of poison resistance will be the randart mace, it will be a difficult one. What is worse is that I do not have a single edged weapon of flaming that could be of help here. The only options that I see as somewhat viable is to either revert back to a rapier or use the randart mace.
Below is my current character’s status. As always, I am open to any tips or suggestions.
