0.29 Tournament Character #2

So after the death of my first character due to a stupid decision not to use a scroll of teleportation soon enough and instead rely on a potion of berserk rage to deal with a swarm of swamp worms, I start another random character, which gave me a Gargoyle Fighter with a flail as the starting weapon of choice. Unfortunately, it has the life of a mosquito and has really shown how harder the game feels with the new 0.29 update.

YASD #2: Edmund the Younger Sucks.

I nearly get killed on D:1 due to getting surrounded by a ball python, a hobgoblin, and a constrictor, and use a potion of might to get out of that situation with 1 HP to spare. Once I heal up, I clear the first 3 floors of the dungeon without any problems. Upon reaching D:4, I read-id scrolls of teleportation, identify, summoning, amnesia, enchant armor, poison, immolation, and noise. I also identify potions of curing, lignification, brilliance, and magic. I then explore the level and find Ijyb, who I kill to get a wand of digging. I also run into Edmund, who proceeds to kill me with his antimagic flail, even though I quaff a potion of lignification to improve my chances.

This attack of opportunity stuff has really screwed me over, as I feel that I could have been able to read a scroll of teleportation and survive the ordeal rather than resort to a potion of lignification as a fallback option. I have dealt with him in previous games without too many problems, but for a Gargoyle Fighter to die to him really prevents any repositioning during battles without taking loads of damage and is forcing me to use consumables more liberally in the early game, which drastically decreases my chances of surviving the late game.
