A Veteran’s 0.28 Dive Character #1

With a new version and quite a few months away from the game, I am back to refresh my skills yet again.

In this series, I will attempt to win a game by playing a randomly generated character. In this series that I am starting, the number before the hyphen signifies the attempt that I am playing, and the number after the hyphen signifies the goal that I have finished. In this case, the character has cleared D:11 and is ready to tackle the Lair of Beasts. I will be playing online for these challenges under the same name (wizard44). The milestones will be roughly the same as that of my previous “Complete N00b’s Journey” series. For this first character, I randomly generate a Vampire Hedge Wizard. for my first character. With that, I bring you:

A Veteran’s 0.28 Dive: Part 1-1

I begin by training just the Fighting, Spellcasting, and Conjurations skills, with a focus on Conjurations. I find a +4 ring of protection and a ring of protection from fire on D:1, and also learn Call Imp upon reaching level 2, prompting me to train Summonings as well. I also pick up a Trismegistus Codex on that level. D:2 had a ring of resist corrosion, and I learn Mephitic Cloud and add Poison Magic and Air Magic to my training, with emphasis on the two schools as well as Conjurations. I also find a staff of poison on that level. On D:3, I fall into a shaft into D:4, but luckily find the upstairs back to D:3, where I run into Robin. Robin quickly goes down to summoned imps, and I get her helmet. I learn the Blink spell and train Translocations to get the failure rate down to acceptable levels. Upon reaching level 6, I turn off Summonings training in order to focus on my other skills.

On D:5, I learn Freezing Cloud, turn on Ice Magic training, and remove emphasis on Poison Magic training. I also find a weapon boutique that has a randart +3 quarterstaff of Liamap {freeze, Int+3 SInv} that I initially put on my shopping list, but eventually remove since I would eventually primarily use my staff of cold or staff of poison. I descend to D:6 and find the entrance to the Ecumenical Temple. I then switch my focuses to only include Ice Magic as my emphasis. I then run into Sigmund the Dreaded, and use Mephitic Cloud, Call Imp, and Magic Dart to take him out. I next enter the temple and choose Vehumet as my god, as Sif Muna was not available.

After choosing my god, I then turn on Dodging training, and head to D:7, where I learn the Ignite Poison spell, and turn on Fire and Transmutations training. I take out a deep elf pyromancer using Freezing Cloud, and kill a kobold demonologist using Mephitic Cloud and Ignite Poison. I also clear a fortress of orcs using Mephitic Cloud and a nearby moat. I also get the +2 randart flail “Ecepto Igue” {freeze, +Blink Dex+4} on that level. D:8 had a two-headed ogre that I deal with Mephitic Cloud and Ignite Poison, and an amulet of reflection. It also had a Book of Frost, which prompts me to turn back on Spellcasting training and switch training emphasis from Ice Magic to Air Magic.

D:9 had an entrance to a bailey, and I use a scroll of teleportation to escape from a killer bee swarm and a group of goblins and wights. I find the bailey entrance and enter it in time. I also get Vehumet’s aid to destructive spells there, which allows me to emphasize focus on Spellcasting and to train Dodging and Evocations in place of Conjurations, Ice, and Air Magic. Clearing the bailey was simple enough, thanks to Freezing Cloud. D:10 had a book of Storms and the entrance to the Lair. I take out an eight-headed hydra using Freezing Cloud, and find a book of Decay. Another two two-headed ogres easily fall to Freezing Cloud, and I find a book of Conjurations and the randart +1 ring mail “Otemu” {rElec Str+2 Int+2} which I immediately put on. I train up Translocations again to try to get my Blink failure rate back down to the single digits.

D:11 had me learning Lightning Bolt, and turning back on Conjurations and Air Magic to get the spell’s failure rate down to the single digits as I clear the level.

So, I believe that I will not be using any weapons, as the staff of poison and cold are too valuable for me to pass up at this point. I might train Staves to mindelay as soon as I get the failure rate of Lightning Bolt to an acceptable level. I should be covered for Lair, as I have a leather armor of poison resistance, and have Lightning Bolt and Freezing Cloud to take out the hydras.

So the next goal for this character is to clear the Lair of Beasts and D:12. The big question is whether I will be learning any future spells in my library, as there are several spells such as Hailstorm, Frozen Ramparts, and Fulminant Prism that I could see myself learning if the scenario is correct.

After a couple of days’ break, this character has cleared the Lair and D:12.

A Veteran’s 0.28 Dive: Part 1-2

I drop the randart flail, ring of protection, a set of acid dragon scales, and robes of fire resistance and willpower near the Lair Stairs. After putting on a leather armour of poison resistance, I enter the Lair. After killing some creatures in Lair:1, I begin training Staves with an emphasis on that and Spellcasting. On Lair:2, I run straight into Harold, prompting me to quaff a potion of invisibility. Harold catches me with a net just as I reach the stairs. I use Freezing Cloud and two Lightning Bolts to kill him before he kills me. I also kill a seven-headed hydra using Freezing Cloud. Lair:3 had an entrance to an ice cave, which I find with a scroll of magic mapping. I kill a six-headed hydra and a boulder beetle, and run into a tense situation with rime drakes that force me to use a scroll of fear so that I can make it to the ice cave. With low HP and magic reserves, I am forced to use a potion of magic so that I can take out the simulacra that is near me. A continuing assault of simulacra and rime drakes force me to use my other scroll of fear and a potion of ambrosia to survive and recover to full health and magic. I use Mephitic Cloud and Ignite Poison to destroy the simulacra, rime drake, and ice statues. I run into a white draconian and use a phantom mirror that I picked up in the ice cave to buy time to recover using a potion of ambrosia. I eventually kill it using several attempts of Mephitic Cloud and Ignite Poison and silver javelins to finish it off. I get the randart ring of Zocsid {Contam Fly rF++} for my trouble, which was a dubious trade off at best.

Upon exiting the ice cave, I immediately have trouble, as a cane toad and 2 rime drakes force me to use a potion of heal wounds and another scroll of teleportation to retreat to an upstairs to recover. Clearing the rest of Lair:3 allowed me to get a book of the Spheres and find out that I have a potion of experience, which I quaff and focus all my experience gain to Staves. I also find the entrance to the Swamp and Spider Nest on that level, and learn Airstrike in order to have a damage spell that no monster can resist. Lair:4 was straightforward to clear, as was Lair:5, which had the entrance to the Slime Pits. Lair:6 had Urug the Orcish Ballista, who goes down to Freezing Cloud and Airstrike. It also had a staff of fire that I take, and a minmay_lair_end_enchanted_forest end vault that contained a book of Dangerous Friends.

D:12 had a book of Alchemy and a randart +0 pair of gloves of the Heavens {+Inv rF+ Str+5} that I put on, which was a good way to end the part.

So the next goal for this character is to clear the Orcish mines and the rest of the main dungeon. Since I picked up a staff of fire, I will probably train spellcasting so that I can learn Fireball in order to cover all of my bases.

Re: A Veteran’s 0.28 Dive Character #1

After some rather close calls, I clear the Orcish Mines, the rest of the main dungeon, and the first 3 swamp levels.

A Veteran’s 0.28 Dive: Part 1-3

Upon entering Orcish Mines:1, I immediately get surrounded by orcs, so I go up and down the staircase and cast Blink several times before I can clear the level with Freezing Cloud. Orcish Mines:2 was cleared in the same way, and I reach mindelay on Staves on that level. I thus begin training Spellcasting with an emphasis. The level’s shops had several scrolls of identify that I use to identify my potion stock, a scroll of amnesia that I use to forget Ignite Poison, and a scroll of acquirement that I read to get a randart ring of Sikarphir {Wiz Fly rF++ Int+3 Dex-5 Stlth+}, which was much better than the ring of Zocsid.

D:13 had a book shop that contained Ozocubu’s Autobiography that I buy in order to learn Ozocubu’s Refrigeration. I then turn on training Ice Magic, Armour, and Stealth. Exploring the level gives me another potion of experience, which I use to train Spellcasting with an emphasis and Ice Magic. I also find an armour shop that I buy a randart gloves in order to identify them as +4 with {Str+3 and Dex+5} and a randart ring mail to identify it as +7 with {Rampage rF- Int+3} and the entrance to the Vaults. D:14 had Josephine, so I use Extrasanguinate to gain triple negative energy resistance, and kill her with Freezing Cloud and Airstrike. I then retreat upstairs and use Revivify before exploring the rest of the level, where I pick up a randart +1 robe of Uskayaw’s Hope {rN+ Will+ Str+4 Int+4}, a buckler, and a book of the Senses. I include Shields training, and run into Louise the Corrupted, which prompts me to use a potion of invisibility to avoid being banished and evade her by going upstairs. I put on the robe of Uskayaw’s Hope, and return to the level. I then kill her using Freezing Cloud and Ozocubu’s Refrigeration. I put the Otemu ring mail back on, and run straight into Nessos. I use Mephitic Cloud, Freezing Cloud, and Ozocubu’s refrigeration to eliminate him. I find another scroll of amnesia and forget Mephitic Cloud so that I can learn Fireball in its place. I find a staff of conjuration and a portal to a secret trove of treasure, which unfortunately requires the Abyssal rune of Zot. I turn off Stealth training, and finish clearing the level. After that, I buy 2 scrolls of teleportation, a scroll of blinking, and a scroll of enchant armor on the Orcish Mines:2 shops. I use the scroll of enchant armor on the buckler and head to D:15.

At D:15, I turn off Spellcasting training and emphasize Ice Magic training. I have a close call with a death knight due to Ozocubu’s Refrigeration miscastings, but manage to survive the ordeal thanks to using a box of beasts. I clear the level without any further trouble, put on my leather armour of poison resistance, and head to the Swamp entrance. Swamp:1 forces me to go up and down the staircase multiple times to deal with the monsters that I run into when entering the level. I am forced to retreat and use a scroll of teleportation to deal with an eleinoma. I also run into Jorgrun Earthshaker, prompting me to use another scroll of teleportation to escape the situation. After healing up, I kill him with Freezing Cloud and Airstrike.

Swamp:2 finds me in a tense situation with an eleionoma and swamp dragon, and I use a scroll of blinking, a potion of curing, 2 potions of heal wounds to get out of the situation, so that I can kill a horde of creatures that included several swamp dragons and a ghost crab with Ozocubu’s Refrigeration castings. It also had a tentacled monstrosity that required me to use a box of beasts, several Blink castings, and even a retreat down to Swamp:3 to kill it with Airstrike and Fireball. I get a staff of air on that level and enter Swamp:3 proper. When trying to deal with a horde of skeletons, I use a potion of invisibility and a potion of heal wounds to escape the horde to heal up and kill them with Fireball.

The next task is to get the Swamp rune. I plan to train Spellcasting and conjurations in order to get Orb of Destruction as my next spell.

Any tips in general are appreciated. My character's status is posted below.

Re: A Veteran’s 0.28 Dive Character #1

YASD #1: The holy trinity of poisoned weapons, delayed teleportation, and inability to use potions.

I resume the game and enter Swamp:4, where I use Ozocubu’s Refrigeration and stair dancing to clear much of the level. I run into trouble with a seven-headed hydra, who takes much of my HP and follows me up the stairs, forcing me to use 2 scrolls of blinking and a scroll of teleportation before I can evade it. After healing with a potion of ambrosia, I manage to kill the seven-headed hydra and clear the rest of the level. I obtain the decaying rune and make my way to the Spider Nest.

Upon entering Spider Nest:1, I have a tense moment with a radroach after running out of MP, and I luckily take it out with a wand of quicksilver. On Spider Nest:2, I learn Orb of Destruction and clear the area without too much problems. Spider Nest:3 has a book of Dreams that I pick up and Arachne the Weaver and Aizul at the same time, prompting me to cast Ozocubu’s Refrigeration twice, retreat upstairs, rest to recover, quaff a potion of brilliance, and kill them both with six castings of Ozocubu’s Refrigeration. I pick up an Inescapable Atlas and proceed to Spider Nest:4, where I run into Mlioglotl, forcing me to retreat upstairs and do some stairhopping in order to control the crowd of spiders before I run into him again. Retreating upstairs does not work, as he hits me hard, forcing me to use a scroll of blinking and 2 scrolls of teleportation to escape him. I then quaff a potion of invisibility and brilliance and kill him with Orb of Destruction and Fireball, using another scroll of teleportation in the process. Relieved at surviving the ordeal, I buy 3 more scrolls of teleportation at a scroll shop at Orcish Mines:2. Upon returning to Spider Nest:4, I immediately get assaulted by an emperor scorpion, a radroach, and a lot of tarentellas. I escape upstairs, use 2 potions of curing and a potion of invisbility, and proceed to escape to Spider Nest:2. Once there, I return down to Spider Nest:3, and kill them with Ozocubu’s Refrigeration. I then head back to Spider Nest:4 and get a Fen Folio, the randart ring “Ceffumm” {Will+ rCorr Dex-4 Slay+3} that I put on in place of my ring of resist corrosion, and the gossamer rune. I then head to the Vaults.

Upon reaching Vaults:1, I immediately run into 5 slime creatures that fall victim to Ozocubu’s Refrigeration. I run into Zenata, and try to kill her with Ozocubu’s Refrigeration. However, her summoned weapons manage to lethally poison me, before my scroll of teleportation kicks in. Unfortunately, it turns out that I was not able to regain my ability to quaff potions in time to prevent the lethal poison. So that is the end of that character.

I might start another one in a couple of days, but right now, I need to rest.
