Tackling Dungeon Sprint Map #1: Red Sonja

Hello everyone. Now that I have sufficiently retrained myself in DCSS with my Tengu Air Elementalist, it is time to work on the Dungeon Sprint maps! The first on the list: Red Sonja!

For the Tackling Dungeon Sprint threads, I will attempt to win each Sprint by playing a randomly generated character. I will be playing online using the 0.27 version for each Dungeon sprint map. For each character, I will post what I feel could be the strategy to follow before starting the character’s journey.

Fortunately, an easy to read map is available for the first Dungeon Sprint map, which can be found here.

The first randomly generated character is a Draconian Hunter with a specialty in slings. So it starts out with a +1 hunting sling and 20 sling bullets in addition to the short sword, scroll of blinking, and potions of curing, haste, heal wounds, magic (x2), and berserk rage.

Below is what I think the early strategy should be:

Start by training just Fighting and Slings. Quaff the potion of berserk rage, and kill Ijyb using the short sword. Rain sling bullets on the ogre and back off to buy as much time to kill it. Quaff the potion of haste and rain down sling bullets on Sigmund, hoping for the best. Kill the jelly and the yak, and get the loot. Choose Strength for every stat up. If I am still alive, I will pick Okawaru as my god for the Heroism boost and hope to get good weapon gifts. I could be convinced to choose another god, however. I will also see if the store has any good items that I can buy at the Okawaru altar. Turn on Dodging training and kill the slime creature, kobold demonologists, giant eyeball, and the demonic crawlers.

Are there any suggestions that I should take in to increase the chances of beating Red Sonja with this character? If there are, I would highly appreciate them.

With no answers, I commence my first attempt with my Draconian Hunter, which fails miserably.

Attempt #1: OHKO'd by an ogre.

I start by opening the door, quaffing the potion of berserk rage, and killing Ijyb using the short sword. I next rain sling bullets on the ogre and try to run from the ogre but gain no additional free shots. I desperately hope that the ogre misses, but it doesn't and proceeds to kill me in one go! So the battle plan I developed didn’t work. I should have used the scroll of blinking to buy enough time to kill the ogre.

So the next generated character is a Vampire Air Elementalist, which starts out with a robe to go with the scroll of blinking, and potions of curing, haste, heal wounds, and magic (x2). It also starts out with the Shock Spell and has knowledge of static Discharge, Swiftness, and Airstrike. Since this is a spellcaster character, I will be adjusting my strategy to the following:

Start by training just Spellcasting. Kill Ijyb using Shock, using a potion of magic if necessary. Turn Air Magic training back on and emphasize Spellcasting training. Cast Shock on the ogre and use the scroll of blinking to buy time. Quaff the potion of haste and rain down Shock or Airstirke on Sigmund, using any potions of magic to refill MP. Turn on Fighting training, kill the jelly and the yak, and get the loot. Choose Intelligence for every stat up. Pick Vehumet when the altar room is reached, but I could be convinced to choose another god. Check the store to see if it has any good items at this point. Turn on Dodging training and kill the slime creature, kobold demonologists, giant eyeball, and the demonic crawlers.

I appreciate any suggestions to increase the chances of beating Red Sonja with this character.

My experience is that the sprint maps need characters who start out extremely strong. With 90% of the available combos I can't win the first 6 fights.
There's a few opportunities for early game cheese in bcrawl, but in the main branch not so. I guess brigand curare and/or passwall stabbing can allow even weak characters to survive the early game in the Red Sonja.
It'd be interesting to learn if your experience is different.

Thanks for the answer petercordia. I start my second attempt, which also flops due to my stupidity after getting a decent part of the map done.

Attempt #2: Ambushed and killed by a hornet and centaur warrior.

I cast Shock at Ijyb three times, but only lightly wound her, with most of my zaps either missing, dealing no damage, or fail due to a miscast. So I use a potion of magic, and use shock three times, but only get Ijyb to moderately wounded. I decide to use my fists as a last resort, and get Ijyb to severely wounded. I then get 1 MP for another Shock, which does not go anyware. After taking advice from Discord, I primarily set my training to Air Magic with some training directed to Conjurations. I also quaff my potion of curing and potion of heal wounds to get my HP back up to acceptable levels. I get another MP point back, which puts it to almost dead. Faced with no other options, I quaff my other potion of magic and barely manage to kill Ijyb.

I then switch training to Spellcasting (with emphasis) and Air Magic, and manage to kill the ogre after using my scroll of blinking. I learn Swiftness, Static Discharge, and Airstrike, and solely focus on Air Magic. I kill Sigmund with two Airstrikes and a Shock. I pick up his scythe and +2 robe of fire resistance and equip them with pride! I turn on Fighting training, get a wand of flame, kill the jelly and yak, and check the store, which sells a potion of brilliance, a potion of haste, a scroll of fear, and a scroll of fog. I buy all four items, worship Vehumet, and find 14 poisoned darts. I kill the slime creature and Sonja using Shock and Airstrike respectively, and get a short sword of draining and curare-tipped darts. I find a Distillery and buy a potion of magic and a potion of heal wounds. I also take out a deep troll using my curare needles. I get a wand of paralysis and a book of Armaments (which give me no useful spells) and find an armour emporium, where I buy a +1 cloak to improve my AC. I then kill the kobold demonologist and a floating eye, but run out of MP and am forced to use my wand of flame to finish it off. I take on two centaur warriors, and use a potion of heal wounds to survive their first wave of assaults. However, both centaur warriors score some lucky hits with a trident, and I read a scroll of fear to scare them off and partially recover. After partially resting, I quaff a potion of brilliance and barely manage to kill a centaur warrior that arrives with Airstrike castings. I rest, and clear a room of ballistomycete spores, and get a potion of curing, 2 potions of curing, and a wand of charming. I buy 2 potions of heal wounds and a +1 hat, and meet my end when I get surprised by a hornet and the second centaur warrior. The airstrike castings do not finish off the hornet, and I get slaughtered to pieces.

So I will be staying well off the centaur warriors in the near future. It was just not worth the risk, and I would have been better off facing the demonic crawlers instead.

The next generated character is a Palentonga Conjurer, which starts out with a robe, scroll of blinking, a potion of curing, a potion of heal wounds, a potion of haste, 2 potions of magic, and a potion of berserk rage. This is another spellcaster character, so I will be roughly following the same strategy as the previous character, only I will replace Air Magic training with Conjurations.
I appreciate any suggestions to improve the chances of beating Red Sonja with this character.

mages should pretty much always 'zerk to kill ljyb

honestly I don't see how a Palentonga Conjurer has a chance of winning. Even if the conjurer spells allow you to take on the room of eyes, you'll still be a Panentonga mage.

Thanks again for your answer. I start my third attempt, which crashes and burns due to some stupid mistakes.

Attempt #3: Mistakes in training and bad luck with a slime creature cost me big time.

By mistake, I set my training to just Spellcasting, quaff my potion of berserk, and slaughter Ijyb. After realizing my error, I switch to just Conjurations emphasis, learn Searing Ray, and manage to kill the ogre after using my scroll of blinking and casting Searing Ray twice. I learn Dazzling Flash, Fulminant Prism, and Iskendrun’s Mystic Blast, quaff my potion of haste, and slaughter Sigmund with Searing Ray. I pick up his scythe and turn on Fighting training with an emphasis on Conjurations. I kill the jelly and yak (with the yak taking me to low health), and check the store, which sells a potion of heal wounds and a scroll of identify, both of which I buy. I use the potion of identify to identify the potion of brilliance that I picked up and worship Vehumet. After a Fulminant Prism fails to deal the slime creature any damage before it reaches me, I try to kill the slime creature using Searing Ray after having to use a potion of heal wounds, but the slime creature kills me before my Searing Rays kill time.

The lesson here: Check your training before beginning the run. Since the slime creature was almost dead, more Conjurations skills would have been enough for me to seal the deal.

The next randomly generated character is a Troll Chaos Knight with a specialty in axes. In addition to the standard potions and scroll of blinking it starts out with, the Troll Chaos Knight has a hand axe of chaos and a +2 robe. I will just start off by training Axes and Fighting, and hope to hell that I can at least survive the first few rooms. I predict this character will quickly get slaughtered, and will have an update soon.

So I play the Troll Chaos Knight, which dies relatively quickly, although it got a bit farther than the third character.

Attempt #4: What do you expect with Chaos Knights?

I start off by training Axes and Fighting, and rush Ijyb. I then emphasize Fighting and turn on Dodging training, use a potion of berserk rage, and kill the ogre, which manages to take half of my health before biting the dust. I put more points in strength upon reaching level 4, get the ogre’s giant spiked club, and emphasize maces and flails training. I then face Sigmund, and Xom plays nice and makes me invisible. I kill Sigmund and get and equip the +2 robe of fire resistance that he drops. I kill the jelly and yak easily with the giant spiked club, read-id a scroll of identify and identify a potion of flight that I picked up from Ijyb, and buy a scroll of enchant armour, a scroll of silence, and potion of resistance. I then face the slime creature again and kill it after it severely wounds me. I then approach the kobold demonologists, but Xom decides to give me berserk, preventing me from using my scroll of silence against them. I kill the kobold demonologists and the floating eye after some tense draining moments due to misses and the demonologists’ summons.

I take on the demonic crawlers, but get surrounded and am forced to blink to safety and recover. I then retreat to a corridor and face the demonic crawlers again, but get to low HP, and use a potion of heal wounds and haste to escape again and heal. With no other options, I face the demonic crawlers again and kill two of them. After healing up, I move to kill another demonic crawler, which Xom transforms into a sixfirhy when I get close to killing it. I quaff a potion of resistance and curing, but die. Xom revives me, but ultimately it was of no use as the transformed sixfirhy finishes me off.

So that truly was an unwinnable combination. The next randomly generated character is a bit saner, with a mummy monk with a specialty in a hand axe. The character starts out with just a hand axe, a robe, and a scroll of blinking, making this character another hard one to try. I will try the same strategy that I did with the Troll Chaos knight and just hope for the best. If I make it to the altars, I will pick Okawaru.

So I play the mummy monk, who quickly meets a grisly end.

Attempt #5: No potions, no chances of survival.

I solely train Axes, and charge at Ijyb with all my might. Unfortunately, Ijyb kills me in three hits, only getting to moderately wounded in the process.

This was in conclusion another unwinnable combination, as the Mummy monk really got screwed on hot being able to use potions. The next randomly generated character is a Spriggan Gladiator with a specialty in long swords. In addition to the starting potions and scroll of blinking, the character starts out with a long sword, 3 throwing nets, a robe, and a hat. So I will be using a strategy that I did using for the chaos knight, substituting Long Blades for Axes when it comes to training, and using each throwing net on Ijyb, the ogre, and Sigmund. Any tips to improve this character’s chances of winning are welcome.

So the spriggan gladiator too meets a bad end due to a bad god pick.

Attempt #6: The Wu Jian Council was a bad idea, especially with Sonja in the mix.

I solely train Long Blades and Fighting, and use a throwing net to disable Ijyb. I manage to damage Ijyb to moderately wounded before it breaks out, and wounds me to the point where I am forced to quaff a potion of curing to survive its assault. I turn on Throwing training while emphasizing Long Blades and Fighting training, and face the ogre. Both of my throwing nets miss the ogre, forcing me to retreat and use the scroll of blinking to get two more tries. One of my throwing nets catches the ogre, and I kill it just as it rips apart the throwing net. I use my last throwing net on Sigmund, turn off Throwing training and replace it with Dodging training, and proceed to whale on Sigmund. Unfortunately, I only manage to lightly wound Sigmund. I then quaff a potion of berserk rage, and fight to the death against him. I manage to kill him, but he manages to get me to 12 HP, which was definitely a close one. I kill the jelly and the yak, and check out the store. The only useful item that it sells is a potion of curing and a scroll of enchant armour, so I buy them both. I use the scroll of enchant armour on the hat, and also read-id a scroll of magic mapping.

I pick Wu Jian as my god, and take out the slime creature after escaping and resting several times. I then emphasize Long Blades for skill training, set a limit for dodging training, and move to fight Sonya. I quaff a potion of haste and get her to almost dead status, but a few well placed attacks from her sword of distortion kills me.

So Wu Jian turned not to be a good enough god for me, as I did not get high enough piety to get good enough value to get any meaningful value. The next randomly generated character is a Deep Elf Earth Elementalist, which *should* be a winnable character. It starts out with 30 stones and a robe in additions to the standard scroll of blinking and potions. So the strategy is to fully concentrate on Earth Magic, and hope that Sandblast is enough to take out the Ijyb, the ogre, and Sigmund. Then I turn on Fighting training, learn Passwall and Stone Arrow, and take on the jelly and yak. I then check out the stores, hope for the best, and worship Vehumet.

So the Deep Elf Earth Elementalist also got killed due to some rather bad luck and choices.

Attempt #7: Sonja and Demonic crawlers combine to screw me over.

I solely concentrate on Earth Magic, and cast Sandblast on Ijyb, which does no damage. I then use a potion of berserk rage and take out Ijyb. I get Ijyb’s wand of flame, a potion of curing, and a dagger. I proceed to take out the ogre by using the scroll of blinking, the wand of flame, and Sandblast castings. After learning Passwall and Stone arrow, I kill Sigmund using Stone Arrow and 2 Sandblasts. I turn on Fighting and Spellcasting training with Earth Magic emphasis training, learn Passwall and Stone Arrow, pick up a scroll of blinking, and take out the jelly using Stone Arrow. I pick up a +2 short sword of holy wrath and kill the yak. I then check out the shop, which sold a scroll of blinking, a scroll of fog, and a scroll of fear that I all buy, and kill the slime creature. I then worship Sif Muna.

I face Sonja, who blinks right next to me and cast Sandblast, which misses. I then use a blinking scroll to escape from her. I then use a potion of curing since she lethally poisoned me with a short sword of venom. I use Passwall to escape and heal to full HP and MP. I then meet Sonja again, who has opened the door to the kobold demonologists and floating eye, and use the wand of flame to take her out. I use Sandblast to try to take her out, but fail to do so before the floating eye and kobold demonologists wreak havoc. I take out the floating eye and use passwall to evade the summons. My resting is interrupted by Sonja, so I quaff a potion of haste, and luckily kill Sonja before she kills me. The attempt leaves me lethally poisoned, so I use my potion of heal wounds to gain enough HP to survive the assault. I buy a scroll of immolation and kill a kobold demonologist. I learn that Sonja opened the door to the demonic crawlers, which spoiled my attempt to try and pass through that room using Passwall. Vehumet offers me knowledge of Foxfire, and I learn it in addition to Petrify. I also turn off spellcasting training, and kill the second kobold demonologist using Sandblast. I use Passwall to pass through the room with the deep troll, and get a +2 pair of gloves and a potion of curing. I also find an armor emporium that sold a +2 robe of the archmagi, but was too expensive. I thus go to the ballistomycete spore room and survive the explosion. I get 2 more potions of curing, and plenty of gold that was enough to buy the +2 robe of the archmagi. I buy 2 scrolls of identify to identify my potion of flight, and kill the deep troll.
With no other choice but to face the demonic crawlers, buy a scroll of holy word, use it to reduce the HP of three crawlers, take one of the wounded crawlers out using Stone Arrow, and use a scroll of blinking to get out of the way after I get to very low HP. I rest up and try again, but get slaughtered by the demonic crawlers.

So yeah, Sonja and the demonic crawlers screwed me over, as I was not able to take them out before they kill me. Not having Lee’s Rapid Deconstruction as a starting spell really hurt. The next randomly generated character is a Troll Conjurer, so I will be following the same strategy as the Palentonga Conjurer and hope for the best.

My stupidity gets the Troll Conjurer killed due to a lack of MP to kill the ogre.

Attempt #8: Low max MP reserves screw me over.

I solely train Conjurations, quaff my potion of berserk, and slaughter Ijyb. Next, I get Ijyb’s wand of digging, learn Searing Ray, and get killed by the ogre after using my scroll of blinking, both potions of Magic, and casting Searing Ray twice and Magic Dart once.

So the lesson here is to watch the starting Max MP, as this was a case where Spellcasting should have been trained as well. The next randomly generated character is a Hill Orc Abyssal Knight with a specialty in unarmed combat. I will be following my strategy for the Chaos Knight strategy and hope for the best.

EDIT: Due to a low damage output, Sigmund kills the Hill Orc Abyssal Knight with ease.

Attempt #9: Yet another quick death due to bad choices.

I decide to train only Fighting, quaff my potion of berserk rage, and kill Ijyb. I get Ijyb’s wand of digging, a potion of curing, and a dagger. I then kill the ogre with the help of a potion of heal wounds. I then quaff a potion of haste and face Sigmund. He gets an advantage on me, and I retreat and use both potions of curing to partially heal. Sigmund finishes me off without too much trouble.

I randomly generate a Djinni Venom Mage, which sounds promising enough. If I do not win with this character, I am just going to pull the plug on trying to beat Red Sonja with randomly generated characters for a while, as I do not seem to have the intelligence to make the proper choices needed to survive.

Re: Tackling Dungeon Sprint Map #1: Red Sonja

The original Djinni Venom Mage game that I was playing got lost since I took a several month hiatus, probably due to the upgrade to 0.28. That was unfortunate, as I got rather far in that game. So I decide to start a new Djinni Venom Mage game, and hope for the best, which did not happen, as that fighter had the lifetime of a mosquito. Because of that, I will post my log of the unfinished game that I had with my first Venom Mage

Attempt #10: Letting IRL issues take over your life will cost you.

I solely concentrate on Fighting, quaff my potion of berserk, and kill Ijyb. I switch to sole Spellcasting training, and face the ogre, where I use Poisonous Vapours and a blinking scroll to win the battle. I then turn on fighting training, quaff a potion of haste, and face Sigmund, who confuses me before I can even get a spell off. I quaff a potion of curing, cast Mephitic Cloud, and repeatedly cast Poisonous Vapours and repeatedly shut a door between us in his face to win the battle. I face the jelly, cast Sting twice, and run away to kill it with poison damage. I kill the yak with Sting and Poisonous vapors, get the Passwall and Swiftness spells, and find that the store is a Book Emporium and is thus useless to my character.

I pick Zin as my god, as that is what Discord suggested. Using the Passwall spell, I pick up several scrolls, and get to an armour Emporium, where I buy the +1 leather armour “Mourmar” {rElec rCorr} read-id and pick up scrolls of identify to identify scrolls of amnesia and silence. After dropping the scrolls of amnesia, I face the slime creature, and use my potion of heal wounds and a potion of berserk rage I picked up to survive the assault. I train spellcasting and fighting equally, and kill the kobold demonologists and floating eye using Olgreb’s Toxic Radiance and Poisonous Vapours. I use Passwall to uselessly get an amulet of faith, use Zin’s Vitalisation ability, cast Swiftness, and open Sonja’s door. Sonja shoots two curare darts that have no effect, and I cast Mephitic Cloud and Poisonous Vapours twice to finish her off. I learn the Frozen Ramparts spell and turn on Dodging training while keeping an emphasis on Fighting and Spellcasting training. I then take on the ballistomycete spores and survive them, get 2 potions of curing and 22 stones that enable me to use Sandblast, and take on the room of shining eyes and floating eyes. Thanks to Zin’s mutation resistance and Olgreb’s Toxic Radiance, I manage to survive the assault without too much trouble. I then go to the four shops, with one of them being a book shoppe, another being a Weapon Emporium without any artifacts, an assorted antiques store that sold 3 scrolls of fog, and a general store that contains a +2 hat of the Bear Spirit {Spirit, +Rage rN+ Will++}, a +9 long sword “Cipt” {flame, Str+2 Int+3}, and a scroll of fog. I buy the scroll of fog, and take out the deep troll using Mephitic Cloud, Poisonous Vapours, and Frozen Ramparts.

I learn the Fireball spell, cast Swiftness, and open the door to the centaur warriors. The centaur warriors get good shots out of me, but I retreat to a corridor, use Mephitic Cloud, Frozen Ramparts, and Poisonous Vapours to dispatch the two centaur warriors. I cast Swiftness again, and use Poisonous Vapours to take out the hornet. I then use Fireball to take out the oklob plant, and use Mephitic Cloud, Frozen Ramparts, and Poisonous Vapours to take out the 2 redbacks.

After that, I end up taking a break that lasts several months due to real life issues. When I returned to the game, I start a new character, solely concentrate on Fighting, quaff my potion of berserk rage, and try to kill Ijyb, which fails miserably, as Ijyb zaps a wand of acid that does a lot of damage and kills my character.
