[YASD] DDFi^Mak - not enough regen

Hi everybody,

I don't think I've ever gone so deep with a Deep Dwarf, they usually die to my hands a lot earlier.
I've done the full dungeon, Orc, Lair and I'm heading to Lair branches. I've started swap but I've found a depressing change of pace as soon as I've stepped in.
Monsters hits a lot deadlier here and it seems I cannot regen enough through Makleb nor with my (very cheap) vamp axe.

I've also tried to brand my +7 axe hoping for a lucky shot with vamp but I've only got drain.
I don't understand how I am supposed to keep going from now on.

On the bright side, you have enough max-mp to ensure you shouldn't die quickly.

I'd be using that +9 axe against most enemies, only using the vampiric one against absolute popcorn. Be on the lookout for a broad axe.
You should be using Makleb's minor destruction a lot more - it's really powerful. You haven't used it at all.
Is there a better helmet in the game? Your artefact hat isn't very good imo.
You have plenty of wand charges. They could help, especially if you train some Evo.
I'd train more Invo (for minor destruction), Evo, Dodging, Shields. Your Evo and Invo aptitudes are really good, and Dodging and Shields should be really cheap to train seeing as you don't have much of either skill.
You seem to be slightly unlucky wrt armour for this stage of the game. Is anything better for sale? If you're struggling, you could enchant something. Maybe the boots. Check if there are any enchanted armours in the game. (use control-F, then "enchanted&&armour")

From what you say about the monsters, you might well need better tactics. It's difficult to say anything about tactics in general, but every situation has little tricks which shift the odds in your favour.

Remember that you can park monsters to leech off of with your vamp axe. (For that it's actually kind of nice that your vamp axe isn't very good---you're less likely to accidentally kill your bloodbags outright.) This lets you top off your hp in between fights if you're not dangerously low on hp, without spending mp or potions.

Ideally you park things with a weak melee attack and no ranged attack, a good amount of hit points, and that are slower than you (so you can walk away easily---but parking near a dispersal trap or something similar may work, too).

thank you for you hints :-) it worked pretty well so far.
I trained EVO and INV and started spamming Mak minor destruction. In the meantime I bought an artifact plate armor I forgot was getting dust on D6 or D7 and it revealed to be a +8 plate armor with various resistances.
Long story short: i destroyed Lair branches, found a Broad Axe on Vault 2, bought all the brand weapon scroll I could found (2) and on the second try I got lucky and it became a Vamp Broad Axe. The sum of this is that I tanked the whole Vault 5 welcome party without a scracht :-)
Let's see if I can reach Zot this time.

Morphed to death by killer clowns in ZOT1.
Anyway never been so close to a victory with a DD. Last time I was in Zot (with a mummy fighter if I remember well) I wasn't so scared by clowns.
Shall learn to respect them (while I mangle them with my next DD...).

I see that you had a large shield. It's very unlucky that the clown managed to hit you with that pie.

By the way, yes, clowns were brutally buffed in some previous version. Before that they were only a bad joke, now they're not.

Also, can you drink in wisp form? I'm not sure. You had cancellation potions.
