CiP: Further DrWz Adventures

I suck at spellcasters. My best KoBe got two runes before death, my best caster? Died on Level 8 of Lair once I think, maybe.
So I got sick of squishy elves, and sick of not having blink and deflect missiles, so now I am sending DrWz to their painful deaths.

This one is purple (I have not tried the breath attack yet, is it cool?), and just found an amulet of faith on DL 10 I think, and is basically at the same place that all my others keep dying - somewhere around Lair. Not that this one has found Lair yet, but it can't be far away.

Normally by XL 11 I would have hoped to diversify my spells a bit, but I have found no books. Like not a single damn book on the first 10 levels. I would like to think my chances of staying alive long enough to receive something (anything) from Sif are reasonable, but the evidence of my last I dont know 10 DrWz suggest otherwise.

Wow, I really need to ID my scrolls and potions, but apart from that, any advice? Should I just forget about my skilling up my spell schools further until I at least find one book, and focus on Spellcasting and Fighting for the moment?

identify your scrolls. how do you want to escape when you have no blink/teleport identified?
hitting with a long sword at low skill level is dangerous, it takes a lot of time. usually it is easier to use short blades and train with the +4 synergy - or don't melee.
shields 5 is enough for a buckler, disable it until later.
stabbing is not very useful with long blades, and don't diversify too much too early.
doding and stealth, on the other hand, help a caster.

most early threats can be overcome with mephitic and imp spam - or by running away. you also have your breath weapon, try it out.

regarding spell schools: i'd train the ones you want to use sometime. if you find a book you can adjust.

To be fair, blink and teleport *are* identified - they are right up there, q and v. Just as well - I had to burn a teleport a few times already. Its just that having IDed those two so early, I never got round to worrying about the others yet.

Imps do do an amazing job - several wizards ago I almost killed an 8-headed hydra with Imps alone, and if I wield the staff of power I have enough mana to really summon a bunch of them.

Skills: Yeah, I should switch on my Dodging and Stealth, good call. I basically only use my weapon against confused monsters, but ok, I can go back and check my stashes for ego daggers and burn a detect curse scroll to see if I have any thing useful I. As for magic, I just don't know. I guess I will keep Conj, Summons and Air on for the moment, and see what crops up.

Purple breath disables buffs. So if you're fighting a hasted wizard, un-haste him with your breath. Purple draconians in Zot can be very annoying because of this; getting all your buffs erased isn't fun.

Well I IDed my scrolls and found Lair. It was protected by lots of electric eels, yaks and goldfish. Got a bit hairy at one point, but at least killing lots of yaks got me some books from Sif.

You can see 2 yaks, a hippogriff (confused), a wolf (confused), a giant frog (confused), friendly 2 imps and a friendly white imp.


Her first gift is a rather heavily abridged catalogue, I mean sure, in about 2 runes time I might be able to kill myself successfully casting chain lightning, but until then? As for the second, well, a bit of necromancy might be ok, I could learn Regeneration perhaps, and think about training my summons and necro skills for eventual Haunt casting. Its not much to go on in terms of development though. Still, dispel undead is good news I guess - do greater undead just keep wandering into conjured flames?

Sif and the Lair floor god have been a bit kinder, and now I have all the books I need to become an Air/Conjurations master blaster. Still, I had to work for it - Lair 1 was very open, and full of dangerous monsters - had a massive blinkathon, got badly cornered, had to cast meth cloud on myself, then burnt another tele scroll, all in all, fun and games. (Lair 1 is probably my least favourite level - sometimes its a claustrophobic half-deserted cake walk, and sometimes its like this, an agoraphobic crowded bedlam) Still, now I have lightning bolt, which makes things a lot easier, as its quite frankly a (noisy) beast .

Should I pick up Iskenderun's MB? Its hopefully a lot quieter than Lightning Bolt, and rElec monsters do exist. Actually, I keep on forgetting I am with Sif, so I guess I can try it out, and if its not much use, just forget it... awesome sauce. Wish I had some rPois though, would make dealing with getting surrounded a lot simpler...

For the same MP/hunger cost, Airstrike would probably be a better choice, though it doesn't do quite as much damage as Mystic Blast for the same power level. Plus it's smite targeted and doesn't miss, and it shreds flying monsters.

Smite targeting it amazing. Airstrike kills boggarts, drakes, and tormentors. Lightning bolt leaves you tormented, surrounded by shadow creatures, and toasty.

CiP: DrWz not dead yet

Thanks guys, I went with Airstrike, and yeah, its very cool - I just cleared a petrified forest Lair 8, and had a lovely time using meth cloud and conjure flame to create confused-burning-death-yak-meat-shields to stand behind whilst air-striking Catoblepas.
I am also still switching from the staff to my long sword to kill confused dudes, so I guess that's pretty non-optimal play right there, but its fun damnit.

Here's my plan:
I still feel very vulnerable out in the open, so I have learnt Freezing Cloud, and am going to spam Ice Beast summons until I can focus my Xp on ICE magic so I can get it castable. I was hoping to get into ice magic a lot earlier, in order to prepare for eventual FC casting, but never mind, if I can get my first level of Ice in the main dungeon, I shall turn all my other skills off, go to Orc, and hope to get Ice up to 4 or 5 quickly, then switch my other needed skills back on and hope to kick some ass.

Is that a good plan? We shall see.

Welp, I am a bit of a newb, but I will say one thing. Once I get to a certain point I power train stealth and get it up to a decent level when I play spellcasters. It saves your ass all the time, and lets you sneak in and set up some good AOE before they get all spread out too. The only spell casters I seem to be good at are Nagas though because of that reason. Lots of HP, stealth and carry are great once you muddle through the early game with poison spit. POison resist and see invis are icings on the cake for me. I am pretty sure DEs get decent stealth so give that a shot.

The DrWz is dead, long live the DrWz

Well I think my key error was to continue playing in 'defeat the iron troll' mode long after I had defeated the iron troll, so that whilst I was taking on the ogre mages, I had totally forgotten about freezing cloud. Too much trog-like blood lust and not enough thinking.

On the plus side, my new DrWz just obliterated a new Orc 4 (also featuring Ogre Mages and Two-Headed Ogres) with Freezing Cloud spam, so it seems I learnt from my mistake :)

So I need to somehow ID all the ego crap from Orc... or perhaps just stick with the spears actually, to reduce chances of distortion, then go do the bottom levels of Lair, and then, I dunno, head on down the dungeon a bit, hoping for some rPois and a Hive entrance.
