Currently running a Vine Stalker Assassin of Dithmenos.

He's cleared dungeon, lair and orc (I got a pretty easy Orc by the way - only 1 knight and no warlords or St. Roka. The only real challenge was a stone giant).
In the early game, I was mostly using darts. Later, I started doing more stabbing and when I can't do that, melee with short blades.

I'm actually quite surprised how successfully he can melee most enemies.
Mostly I've been using a poisoned short sword at min delay. I recently found a short sword of speed, which is a bit quicker, but I still favour the poisoned one on tough enemies because if things start going pear-shaped, I can back away and let the poison finish them off.

I've never won with a stabber. I find that at a certain point, you encounter enemies that you can't kill via stabbing, so you need some other way to killdudes.

I few interesting choices present themselves at this point:
1. I have an unbranded rapier stashed away plus some branding scrolls. I could try to get a good brand and train a bit more SB to get it to min delay.
2. I could transition to LB. Not sure if it's worth it though, because lower min delay on SB means more bites, which I think is where most of the damage comes from.
3. I have a couple of useful hexes in my library. I could try to get them online. Again, not sure if it's worth it because I have a wand of paralysis, plus not sure if I want to be expending MP on spells when I have low HP and intrinsic sprit shield, which makes MP effectively HP.
4. I'm currently wearing a buckler, but I have a medium shield stashed away. 15 shield skill seems like a big investment at this point, though.

Edit: Another option is to train invo to get Dithmenos' Shadow Form online. It seems like a pretty powerful ability, but also seems like it has significant drawbacks (i.e. draining). It's not clear from the wiki entry whether the draining remains after Shadow Form times out.

You'll probably stick with the pearl dragon scales for the rest of the game, in which case you should really get Confusing Touch online. With enough patience CT is incredible.
For the other hexes, you probably don't have enough int to get decent spellpower.
I can recommend darts. Darts are great. (Javelins are also great.)
If you're not using spells, you can just wear the largest shield you've found. The shield penalty doesn't really do much.
The draining from Shadowform remains after Shadowform times out. I think it's hard to use Shadowform for invis stabbing, but it's a great escape tool regardless of your playstyle.

The drain from Shadow form is no different from regular drain, getting more XP makes it go away. Taking a lot of damage while it lasts will increase the amount drained, however. Be mindful of that.

I switched to the bigger shield immediately as suggested by petercordia (thanks!)

I ran into a bit of trouble in Spider - the rune vault was guarded by two ghost moths and I had no source of see invisible or of invisibility at the time, so I had to abandon that rune temporarily.

Shoals was good to me though. Not only did I pick up a ring with SInv, but I also picked up a rapier of speed and a set of shadow dragon scales.
I started using both. Not sure if the shadow dragon scales are really better than the pearl dragon ones though. My stealth was pretty high already, so not sure that the extra stealth from the SDA is needed. I might be better off with the rN+ from the PDA.

Later on I got a few hexes online, but I haven't really been using them much.

Later again, I started transitioning to long blades. I had a scimitar of draining for a while and now an unbranded demon blade. I think the rapier of speed is better though. It seems to kill things quicker and I take less damage.

I took a brief detour into the Hell, only because I found a treasure trove that requires the Horn of Geryon to enter. Got absolutely swamped and had to make a run for it. I don't think I'll go back there again in this game. Whatever's in that treasure trove isn't worth dying for.

I've just finished Depths. I'm tossing up whether to do Vaults:5, Slime or Elf at this point.

So....I sailed through Elf and Slime (apart from getting caught in the results of my own immmolation scroll on Slime:5).

I'm struggling with Zot though. I've almost died about 3 or 4 times in the first 2 levels. A curse toe was the worst one. Any advice on not dying?

(BTW, I switched back to the pearl dragon armour. I didn't need the extra stealth and I figured rN would be useful for Zot).

Don't bother with a +0 vampiric rapier, the difference between +0 and +5 is massive. Don't bother with the dagger either. The +5 rapier of speed and the +3 demon blade are both okay, the speed one is probably better since you're a vinestalker.

Any amulet of rage available? This massively increases your combat potential in an isolated fight, much moreso than reflection. Of course, the trick is to engineer isolated fights, but since you've gotten this far you probably know how to do that.

Also Joda is a great ring, you should wear it by default instead of Jutaut. STR increases the damage of your attacks and bites while reducing your armor penalty. Keep Jutaut in your inventory and swap to it when rC is needed (which is actually not often, maybe even never, in Zot).

I have mostly being wearing the Joda ring. I switched for a white draconian and forgot to switch back, so thanks for pointing that out.

The vampiric rapier actually saved my life when I was fighting the aforementioned curse toe. I was initially fighting it with the rapier of speed, but I got hemmed in by its summons and low on hit points. Switching to the vampiric one allowed me to claw back enough HP to survive until my teleport kicked in. I think you're right that the rapier of speed is generally better, but the vampiric one is useful in some specific scenarios.

Edit: I took your advice and bought an amulet of rage.
