As the title says, paralysis was the problem here. I feel like whining about it because I was deliberately thinking about that threat, went and bought a ring of protection from magic just before going to orc, and still died to it. There had been a pack of death yaks at the lair entrance, so I dipped into orc first, but a sorcerer right by the stairs with no MR was too dangerous, so I left, dove past the yaks and cleared all of Lair for the exp. I'm not really sure I did anything wrong here, although I suppose you could always be even more paranoid (like using potion petition in hopes of finding a potion of resist, or something like that?). Still, in general I think I did the "correct" thing in coming here with the MR ring. I avoided using ice form as I didn't want to be vulnerable to fire; I hadn't yet found any rF.

Shame, the character was just getting to the point where it was feeling quite strong. Only one protection ring, but two rings of evasion gave some pretty good defenses. And guardian spirit goes a long way towards having more hp, as well as the regeneration spell.

Well, I think the correct play would be to skip Orc and continue the dungeon. It is very unlikely to throw you anything similarly dangerous.

Paralysis is very dangerous here, because you are an octopode relying on evasion, and because you are at a branch entrace, so there is only one stair and you have a hard time controlling position.

I know that many players talk about MR being mandatory, etc., but sometimes I feel MR is a trap, because it gives you false safety feeling: you tend to forget that your main defence against paralysis is positioning. If there were no MR ring, maybe you would make the correct choice and not enter Orc at all, or at least use everything you have.

Also, I guess you know it but this is lame (I die similarly, so do not take it personally):

If you enter orc regardless, you could drank a potion of resistance and be invisible (which helps against the other orcs, even if not against the sorcerer). You could use potion petition, but you actually had resistance and invisibility without it. You may also have cast statue form, so you have some AC if you got paralysed.

Bad luck, in my opinion.

These aren't why you died, but I would have used the scrolls of identify on potions and scrolls: the scroll of summoning might have helped in a slightly different situation where you survived paralysis with just a few HP left. I also would have worn the shield: that's a lot of extra defense (when not paralyzed and not shot by bolt spells) for not much penalty, especially with 7 skill levels in Shields.
