CIP: an octo with an interesting weapon

Hi guys, this is weird. I was playing an OcWz and trying to delay training magical skills because I was thinking of going Sif (so I wouldn't waste the piety -- also, I find it fun to just train Fighting and go pure melee at the beginning).

Then on D:4 I found my best randart ever, something quite impressive indeed: the +9 trident of Gooshroeh (weapon) {speed, Fragile +Rage +Inv Str+9}

Really, this time we can say: "when you find a weapon and realize you're gonna bring it to the endgame" :D
I immediately switched to training Polearms like crazy (with a bit of Evo to kickstart those incredible bonuses) and started killed ogres and yaks like there's no tomorrow.

Now I (finally!) got to the Temple and I'm unsure about the god to follow: Gozag for the jewellery (and books)? Dith to eventually double up on melee attacks and conjurations? Vehu, to complement my melee with long-range attacks? Or should I stick to Sif, wait a long time and make sure to get Stone Statue? To do that I have to avoid dying earlier, though...

Ironically, in a shop on D:4 I also found a cheap (789 gold)... +8 longbow of velocity, +Inv! Too bad my trident is fragile, otherwise I would've been set on ranged attacks, too!

Anyway, I'm gonna stop now lest I have too much fun and end up killed like a moron. In the meantime, any advice on gods and general build strategy would be appreciated. This is really an octopus that would shine as a stone statue...

I personally would stop training spell schools. I may train a little bit of spellcasting later instead: you spread over many schools.

I would train a lot of dodging and some fighting. The trident is indeed very good, so sooner or later I would train it to min delay. Later get a shield and train it a little bit.

Amongst the gods you mentioned only Gozag is strong, potion petition is stronger than any abilities the other gods offer, who are all on the weaker side of gods. However, from your comments it seems that your aim is not power (you mention shops for Gozag and statue form for Sif, both relies too much on luck and gets useful too late in the game). So choose whichever you enjoy playing the most.

yeah, my problem with Gozag is: I've got the most awful luck with shops and I kinda forget to use the potions. I died many times without using even the first, free petition!

So, I guess this is the time to learn to actually use my tools and do Gozag, so -- hopefully -- I'll finally manage to bribe a branch! I'm going Gozag, thanks for the advice!

Conjure Flame + polearm is strong for a good while. Use it. Also, use Potion Petition and (later) Bribe Branch.

Just wanted to mention that the trident is in fact incredible for the early game, but it would fall off against well armored late game foes. This would only matter if you're going to use a lot of melee, though, if you just use melee for weak/medium threats and continue to be a wizard for the true threats, then the polearm would be fine. I just wouldn't recommend trying to melee an orb of fire (20ac) with it, is all.
