YAVP HOFi First Win Late Game Advice

So I finally got my first win. After many fruitless attempts with troll abysall knights, I found the secret was to pick Hill Orc and worship Beogh. FIghter was nice for the starting armor and shield to survive until I got Orc followers, after which I only had a few close calls (including in the salt cave where I couldn't bring my followers). I lucked out on rune #3 - a lich banished me to the abyss, where I literally stumbled upon the rune on the same level while waiting for a teleport to kick in. I tried slime pit but even L1 was brutal, especially on my followers. I tried Vault 5 without my followers but didn't have the sustain so had to summon my followers and beat a retreat, losing most of them in the process but living to return and take the floor. After one or two tough battles in the depths the Zot levels were surprisingly simple - Zot 1 was a little hard but once I got used to the monsters the rest were easy until Zot 5. I mostly fought alone without my followers, retreating back to them only when the going got tough. I briefly entered hell, but decided to go for my first win rather than gamble with getting more runes. I felt my character was strong enough though to go for more.

I'm looking for late game advice on skill allocation. i played around with investing in magic just to learn how it works, ended up specializing in summoning, but I wasn't sure if I should have gotten my defensive skills higher or tried maxing fighting and axe - I stopped at 25 for those, or gotten throwing higher - I ended up using my javelins of penetration a lot in Zot 5. My offense and defense seemed strong enough though so I figured rounding out my capabilities with spells would be better. Despite the high skill bonus on Invocations, I never saw a need to raise it higher (I never used Smite through). Given my spell library, any advice on spell selection?

I'd usually stop axes at 18 (min-delay for a broadaxe), shields at 15 (if you're using a medium shield), and fighting, dodging, armour somewhere around 20. If you commit to throwing it can be really good if you also train throwing up to 20 and beyond.

It seems a bit odd you're using a handaxe.

For your spells, given your low Int, it would've made sence to aim for Shadow Creatures. This because your spellpower is always going to be weak with 12 Int, but Shadow Creatures doesn't care about spell power. It's also a good spell. Aura of Abjuration, Blink, Passwall and Beastly Appendage all look useful. Did you get any use out of Call Imp or Canine Familiar? Summon Butterflies could also have been useful, and Sticks to Snakes and Mana Vipers could've been good if you had invested in the relevant skills. (StS benefits greatly from spellpower.)

Thanks for the feedback!

I initially did stop my weapon skills after reaching min-delay, but eventually resumed when I didn't know what else to increase. I guess in hindsight I should have gotten throwing to mindelay (16 for javelin) and gotten Dodge higher.

Regarding the handaxe, it had the best resists of my various weapon choices and was +8. I guess I was more concerned with resists than damage output (perhaps my legacy as an Angband player)

I have no idea which spells need high spellpower, so good to know about Shadow Creature vs sticks to snakes. In hindsight, Call Imp/Familiar were pretty much useless as I got them so late, Summon Demons had somewhat better sustain and I did use it a little. I didn't want to carry arrows for stick to snakes, but should have tried summon butterflies.
The spell I used the most was Regeneration, to give me better sustain (especially in Vault 5). I only used Passwall on the orb run. I would have used blink more, but instead used the Blink ability from my sling. Beastly Appendage I should have used more (didn't always remember, or didn't want to waste the turn), and then in Zot 5 got mutations that prevented its use.

I did read that guide before (the screenshot of the followers convinced me to give it a try), but I missed the part about how smite rocks with high invocation skill. Should have figured, given how terrifying HO priest smites are in early game against the player :) I was just worried about using up piety when smiting, but I guess it isn't much. So lesson for next tim, put skill points towards invocation.

(The guide's recommendation to not try to keep wizard and priest followers alive is a good one, took me well over half the game before I figured that out.)
