CIP:OpTm Chei-Advice Needed

Hey guys,

Just started playing an OpTm - which ive done a few times before but only ever really made it up to lair.

I feel fairly strong this game. I have a few spells available to me but not sure what to learn. I originally got Corona for invisible enemies, then immediately found a ring of see invisible. Go figure :)

I have blade hands at low failure, and Invocations high enough that bend time is low failure; So have started training FIghting / Dodging / UC.

Any suggestions before I continue?

I would not pick Chei for OpTm, but what's done is done. As for the training so far, you should generally prioritize UC/Fighting/Dodging first. You don't really need to rush higher level transmutations because Spider Form is really cheap and really good for a very long time.

As played, you should train UC/Fighting/Dodging now. Better late than never.

Bend Time is really good, so use it often. Chei piety is easy to get.

Use your ID scrolls on potions or scrolls.

Memorize Ice Form. If you meet a hydra you'll be glad you did.

You probably shouldn't be walking around with rF-. Especially with Chei. Swap the ring in if required, otherwise keep it off.

I dont know why, but I've always just fancied the idea of a super strong lumbering slow octopus beating the crap out of everything. I realise its not an optimum combo!

I used bend time earlier when I almost died to a centaur out in the open. What exactly does it do? just slow everything around me? (Essentially like hasting myself)

The wiki says "Slows everything adjacent to me" which makes me think it only affects things on the next tile?

Any other suggestions for spells? Ice form is one I'll get for lair for certain. Thanks for the advice!

Bend time has a chance to slow all creatures adjacent to you.
The chance is based on Hit Dice of the creature and your invocations skill. You actually need more invocations skill for it to work reliably than just to get the fail % down.

You have a bunch of situationally useful spells in your library. (Confusing Touch, Animate Skeleton, Petrify, Yara's, Mephitic, etc) I think it's a matter of personal preference how much to put into these spells, and how much to put into UC, Dodging, Fighting.

As mentioned above, Bend Time slows monsters next to you. It has a very high success rate even with very little invo training. IIRC, with 5 invo, you will slow two-headed ogres about 90% of the time. With 10 invo you can slow Death Yaks > 80% of the time.

Thanks. And do I need to use it when they are adjacent to me? Or is it like, a 10 turn period where anything that stands next to me is slowed? (I.e can I use it with a 1 tile gap between me and said monster, meaning that on the next turn, when they get next to me they will be slowed?)

I played a lot of Op, and had a lot of fun with OpTm^Chei. I also think Chei is the god I have the most wins on ;)

Some general advice for those characters :
  • With Chei you ultimately want 12-14 Invo to get Step from Time reliable, that's your panic button (the truth is that you want 27 for titles but... :roll: )
  • Slouch is awesome in Lair because most dangerous monsters are fast (blink/spliny frogs, bees, various snakes, even spriggans and boggarts if you have this layout... Get it reliable
  • Chei provides crazy Dex, get some Dodging
  • Stick to Snakes is VERY powerful, it killed Rupert alone for me for example
  • Slouch works on invisible monsters, that destroys Unseen horrors for example (for the next time you wander about SInv or Corona ;) )
  • I personnaly like "support" Transmutations : Yara's, Petrify, S2S. I also often learn Irradiate.
  • Ice Form is great in Lair
  • Blade Hands does crazy damage
  • Some Stealth levels are very cheap as Op and can help
  • I like to have some throwing for all this time before monsters are in melee range, though you can always use Temoral Distortion
  • I love Statue Form for Op^Chei but I don't know if it is advisable ;)

For your character you want to focus on UC, Fighting, Invocations and Dodging for a while. I would start with UC/Invoc to 10, then add the others.

Bend time only slows adjacent creeps, you cannot use it as a gap closer.

So re: Bend TIme - I cannot use it as a gap closer. But, if I use it with nothing adjacent to me, will something that becomes adjacent to me on the next turn be affected? or do I have to wait until the thing is next to me to use it (Giving it a free hit essentially no?)

aaaaand dead.

Died to band of orcs. I think I needed more fighting/dodging. I could cut through most of them in 1 or two hits - but there were a couple with polearms. A turn spent killing one orc and getting hit by two of them at the same time is rough!

I feel like I couldn't use god abilities at one point and decided it was because I had blade hands active so couldn't use my god abilities. Apparently tho according to the below I used bend time. Who knows, I did it wrong, I paid the price.

Should I have probably really been using ice form for the extra AC?

there are a lot of tricks involved in getting successful on such a combo - use hex wands for orc warriors or curare needles! also remember the 2nd ability from chei is instant and can get peeps out of melee range since it rearranges screen

mopls advice is mostly solid although i would def rush statue form as soon as you find the book, since it provides AC and poison immunity

You probably should have used sticks to snakes a bunch of times, before transforming and trying to kill everything yourself. An octopode is not very likely to successfully just manfight an orc warrior, especially one with friends, before lair.

As for not being able to use god abilities, my guess would be that you didn't have enough MP at the time.

Sticks to snakes is good, and spider form makes it very hard to die to orcs. You have infinite EV and venom branded attacks. Keep in mind that you can poison a monster two or three times, then use temporal distortion to warp time so that monster dies from poison.

Whats really been bothering me on this character is orc smiters. Spider form, as you mention, is great for EV and not getting bashed by stuff. But a couple of smites and I'm in serious trouble!

I'm worried I'll be too slow in Lair, being a Chei worshipper and not finding him until recently; my piety is quite low. If I die, I die though - Its a learning experience. I had an XL27 DEFE with 14 runes on CYC before it crashed, so until its back I'm going to keep doing this!

Went into Lair, Saw a spiny frog and it was red, so decided to do a couple more levels of dungeon.

Ran into a solo Vampire and just panicked and mashed buttons while he drained my life and killed me. Kept getting him super low, then he'd drain me and heal :(

Secret tech against Vampires is to quaff lignification. They cannot vampiric drain you in tree form (they will still waste turns trying, though). Wands also work, of course.

Btw, don't go by red "threat level": it's very misleading. Spiny frogs are easy for transmuters because Ice Form gives rPois, AC and also slows them. Pretty much everything in Lair is handled easily by Ice Form.

More generally, I would not worship Chei for OpTm. One of the advantages for Chei is the increased stats, which allows you to cast spells in heavy armour. Since Op cannot wear armour, Chei is mostly wasted on Op. I would pick something like Fedhas or Yred or Ru or Gozag or Ely. Fedhas -> Jiyva transition is also possible -- Fedhas wrath is pretty mild if you have Jiyva. However, you can play however you want.

More general comments, I would not train transmutations so much so early. UC/Fighting/Dodging are more important early on. Everything before Lair is handled by Spider Form (which is really cheap), and everything in Lair can be handled by Ice Form. Ice Form can be better than Blade Hands in many cases for Op because it gives more HP, a bit of AC and has pretty good damage. Eventually, you want Statue Form and a shield, or Dragon Form.

With melee octopodes I also suggest training (way more) dodging.

Octopodes have good melee damage against most enemies because they can constrict. But they have bad defences. Fighting is useful, too, but they do not get enough HP from fighting skil, but get much better results from dodging. With a melee octopode it is very likely that my dodging skill would be the highest for a long time.

You have a bunch of situationally useful spells in your library. (Confusing Touch, Animate Skeleton, Petrify, Yara's, Mephitic, etc) I think it's a matter of personal preference how much to put into these spells, and how much to put into UC, Dodging, Fighting.

Indeed, Transmutations spells aren't like Conjuration-like ones that you want very reliable. ~20% fail rate (as long sa it's not red failure) is totally acceptable for Forms in the beginning.

I know many people will call this sacrilege or think I am stupid but considering I have beaten 9-rune and 1-rune Hellcrawl with multiple melee Op and I have 15 runed a no-transmutation all melee Op of Oka/Zin (before tomb redo) so I may I have some idea. For an unarmed melee Op start I recommend the following:

- train UC 100% up to about 9-11 and I mean 100%. You train UC up as fast as possible to the exclusion of everything else.
- then train fighting and defense roughly equally shooting for about 7-10 fighting
- then do whatever (depends on what you have found and what the specifics of your start are)

You DO want defense but your start is better if you do them later. By mid-lair you want to shoot for a summation of AC+EV+SH of roughly 50, you don't have to have this but if you don't then don't melee death yaks. You best option for defense is a shield.

The main reason this works, is because Op offense starts very strong, your tentacle aux is one of the strongest aux in the game. Training your UC gives you another very good aux and makes your UC have a decent enough base value for the multiplier in fighting to mean something and Op can make the offhand aux even when using a shield so you never lose it assuming you stay UC. While constriction is nice and very helpful against high EV things, this is not your major concern here as it does not work for Op on key things like early ogres. Training defense early is just not effective enough to be reliable versus focusing on offense, Op are too squishy early on for 5 EV to be that much of a difference maker, obviously it helps but its not enough and higher offense is leveraged better, the only real exception is specifically OpFi of chei who train both dodge and shield and gets a decent amount of piety early or some similar lucky find (shield of ignorance) they can wind up something like 30-40 ac+ev+sh which is pretty solid pre-lair.

If you are chei and have high dex or you start as a fighter and have a shield you can focus on some defense earlier but you won't find it to be any better really. Also, IMO, a Op with a shield and 10/10 UC fighting is better than the starting Tm forms except for blade hands (and in some cases better than blade hands). Blade hands does enough extra damage to make up the difference but Ice Beast, IMO, is not better although its close and spider form is vastly inferior to it. If I find a shield early (i.e like d1 or 2) on an OpTm I don't even bother training any of the starter book, except possibly blade hands (if I got stupud lucky and found statue form I would train blade hands).

If you can get a melee Op to about 55 ac+EV+sh with UC/fighting then you can clear lair reliably and should have a winnable character. You need both but, IMO, focusing on offense is the easier start and I think its an important thing for starting Op players to realize. Because if you ever try a non-transmutation OpFi of Oka will beging to realize around the depths that even with rather good combined defense you absolutely have to use finesse to win. Offense is a key aspect of the survivability of melee Op outside of statue form. Only a statue-pode has the luxury of not cultivating high end offense and they get high end offense anyway.
If you don't believe me simply do the above advice with a vanilla OpFi and OpAs start (training your minor focus of shield or throwing/stealth in step 2 after you get UC up). Try doing the same and training much more shield or dodging. After doing a few runs of OpFi this way versus other ways I think you will be surprised that the offensive start is roughly twice as safe (when sensible playing precautions are performed, i.e. don't go toe to toe with an ogre until you can handle it). I would suggest taking Oka as your god for this test and use Heroism and Finesse liberally not for effectiveness but to see the change in effectiveness. I do not know if this strategy holds for weapon-based Op, I rarely do that, it may not. One of the valuable things about this strategy is that its consistent and essenitally almost always works when done right. The major variables are finding rings, shields and books.

It depends when you see an ogre and what your start is

In general I would say that once you can reliably choose when to kill an ogre and when not to you are starting to get a feel for things. But here is my general guidance:

- If you are OpFi/have a shield and above ~4th level and your UC is above 6 you can kill an ogre without trouble 80% of the time. DO NOT fight an ogre until you have enough HP. You basically have to run if they hit you really hard. If you are too low a level you risk a one shot which is not worthwhile.

- if you are something like an OpAs then you need higher UC maybe 8 and for especially early Ogre you can weaken them with throwing or use a curare (although they are precious early). If you can take half their life with throwing, you are roughly equivalent to having a shield. Again you have to beware the one shot, but with sufficient UC you will kill them pretty fast. For starts like this a modest investment in stealth can be very helpful, but Op are natively good at stealth so you need very little actual XP spent to get to something useful

Another major killer will probably be adders, for Op constriction and decent UC takes care of them pretty well, but an early D2 adder can kill you. By D3 they should be fine probably.

-Also as a majorly important UC Op specific thing in early levels Potions of Lignification are a "get out of jail free" card for most melee situations, you get a bunch of AC but also tree form base UC damage is quite high. A tree with a shield and UC 5+ will easily kill an ogre. Obviously a smiting orc priest will still kill you. But each Pot of Lig is basically a free kill on an Ogre, Ice Beast or even Orc Warrior with a strong weapon. If you have found one or two of these you can breath a lot easier.

Basically D2-4 ogres are dicey, at some point you will notice you can flat out killdudes tab kill them easily, and that will change very rapidly. The same is true of gnolls with halberds, in fact they are probably more dangerous since there are always other gnolls. D2 is almost certainly an always run simply because you do not have enough HP to take a random hit. D3 is dicey. D4 you may feel pretty good but should be careful. D6 or so you should flat kill a normal ogre as an OpFi. My floor numbers may be a little off as I am more used to Hellcrawl's faster initial XP, normal crawl is kind of tedious compared to hellcrawl.

Basically by training UC exclusively you are getting ahead of the curve, but initially everyone is at the bottom of the curve. UC is peculiar because points in UC affect far more things than points in other weapon skills, not only do they contribute more damage and speed but they also increase the Aux attack.

The combination of rapid changes to HP (i.e early on you are basically doubling your total HP) and a much greater per point return on your weapon means you very suddenly change in effectiveness (this doesn't last, which is why you have to transition to defense later). The verbiage of your tentacle aux is not very descriptive but initially its as damaging as any weapon, early Op are essentially dual wielding, but your HP at level 1 and 2 is simply to low to face an ogre; you have to run. You can gamble, but be aware its definitely a serious gamble. This is one reason spider form is flat out inferior to just being an Op, losing the tentacle aux is a huge damage nerf early on.

For the purposes of experimenting, not winning, I reccomend people play a number of OpFi and OpAs and try to reliably kill ogres as early as possible. You will die a lot but you will get a good feel of your capabilities and will probably be surprised how fast they go from stupidly threatening to an easy kill. The knowledge involved with this is, essentially, the heart of playing non-statue Op successfully, without huge armor you have to be aware of big hits. You either run or you burn them down. And you need to have a plan for both before you start the engagement. This is very important. You need to have a good feel for how things will go south and have a plan B. This is true in general but for Op without statue and who are trying to melee (i.e. not doing casting/summoning strats) its gonna almost always go south in a particular way. You are fine for a while and probably doing good damage, then BAM big hit. Can you burn em down or do you run? Hopefully you already know how you are gonna run. This will always be your question whether you are melee Oka OpFi or using Blade Hands.

Statue Op is different, you can get combined defenses of over 100 and AC with enough guaranteed defense to make hits reliably smaller, the game is different for melee when you are 100+ in combined defenses. However don't be fooled this does not mean Statue is superior. Dragon form Op still has the "Can I burn them down or do I run" playstyle and cannot really do the "Can I weather this storm" playstyle of of statue. For a long time I considered statue to be superior, but after playing Hellcrawl a lot I have changed my mind. In hellcrawl once you pick up the Orb you have to enter a portal to Hell's vestibule, then dive through one of the 4 layers of hell randomly while carrying the orb in order to win. Everything is abreviated and there are less runes, in fact you can win with 0 runes. The hardest thing to do is to win with 1 rune (perhaps low turn count is harder, not sure), which means you skip everything and then only pick up the rune in hell which you have to do while carrying the orb. I did this on a melee Op. If I recall correctly I entered Hell around level 24. I chose to do this as a Dragon Form not a statue form Op. I had previously gotten to the vesitbule of hell as a statue and got overwhelmed, I switched to dragon and the overwhelming offense made the difference, I could kill fast enough and move fast enough to not get bogged down. Its possible to do it as statuepode, but the extra defenese is deceptive. Killsduding faster was actually safer. Of course if you have no defense at all you just die. But at the same time it forces you to make better initial choices. Statue is just easier, Dragon level offense with smarter choices is more powerful (except, perhaps, in certain cases that statue is tailored for). Interestingly Crawl starts teaching you this immediately, what you learn about ogres on D3 can carry you through the entire game. You can go statue form and make what you learn less needed but don't be fooled its not actually more effective, although it is quite effective.

Anyone know why Ijyb hasnt fallen down the shaft? I've not really shafted monsters before, but I thought as soon as they stepped on it, they'd fall? That shot was taken on the turn that he stepped onto the shaft.

So I resumed this game after a little hiatus. Ijyb stepped over the shaft without issue, seemingly levitating over it. I managed to get back upstairs and avoid duvessa and dowan completely - Am now on level 3 of lair. Will stop playing for tonight now.

Any tips or suggestions? im thinking more invocations, fighting and dodging to 10 - and a bit more stealth and then see what the game presents to me.

Problem with fighting ogres early is that 2 high roll hits kill you, and random energy is a thing.

If you can take > 2 max damage hits from GC or GSC + ogre base damage you can safely engage them in melee. If you're OpAs or something per above you just poison them to death though. Many of the book starts can kill them with spells. Melee Op should avoid until health is sufficient, though OpBe do get a boost from berserking.

With Chei you might not have a choice of course. In that case you blow consumables on them.
