CIP:Next DDEE Makhleb

Hey guys,

Am i right now to start putting skill into some defense?

Should I be using the spriggans knife or speed dagger for stabs? Otherwise I normally use the staff of conjuration.

Any advice welcome! Thanks!

Use Spriggan's knife for stabs, it's actually a dagger-type weapon.

I'd definitely learn Passwall, as you get a free stab-turn. If you plan staying in medium armour, I'd also train some Stealth for more stabs and better ones.

Speed dagger has a 50% faster attack speed, so over repeated stab attempts, you would get 50% more stab damage than a normal dagger.

Spriggan knife treats all stabs as high-tier stabs, which are the more powerful stabs you get on sleeping, paralyzed, or petrified enemies. The stabbing damage for high-tier stabs is 4x higher than for low-tier stabs (low-tier stabs are all other stabs: distracted, unseeing, netted, petrifying, etc.), so this is effectively 300% more stab damage than a normal dagger for low-tier stabs. Much better than the speed dagger (for low-tier stabs).

For high-tier stabs, I guess the speed dagger is technically better, but you're generally one-or-two shotting those enemies anyway, so I wouldn't bother with it; I'd just use the spriggan knife.

Your offense is great, with with LRD at 1% fail, so yes this is a good time to train defenses. With swamp dragon scales, cloak, and gloves, your base AC is 9. Each level of armour skill increases your AC by base/22 = 9/22, so you get one AC per 22/9 = 2.44 levels of armour skill. That's pretty cheap for you right now, so I would say it's definitely worth skilling up 1 point of AC for sure, maybe more. Some Fighting for HP and Dodging for EV would also be cheap and helpful.

Also, you want to train some spellcasting. In spell success and spell power calculations, 4 levels of spellcasting are equivalent to 1 level in EVERY other spell skill. Right now 4 levels of spellcasting is cheaper for you than 1 level of earth magic, so you really should have trained it instead of the most recent level of earth. I don't mean to be discouraging, just letting you know :)

You should have trained more spellcasting, less earth
(the cost of an extra point of spellcasting should probably be about half as much as the cost of an extra point or Earth magic)
But yes, seeing LRD is at 1% fail and ###### power, it's good to invest more in defences.

I think the spriggans knife is almost always better than the dagger of speed. Stealth+ is good for sleepstabs, +7 is good for non-stabs, and it's ability to sleep-stab non-sleepers is good for non-sleep stabs. Also, +4EV.

You've already lost 1.75 permanent mp. A bit sloppy? Some things you can do to maintain your maxmp at the start of a DDEE game:
1- using all my enchant armour scrolls
2- avoiding dangerous monsters
3- Passwall stabbing dangerous monsters
4- train a bunch of stealth to help with 2&3
5- train more fighting for ++maxhp
6- use a vampiric weapon, if possible - it's ok to spend a bit of food to safe maxmp
7- kite like a maniac, until you get a renewable way to regain hp
8- get a shield, if possible
9- play mutation roulette

how do passwall stabs work then?

This isn't really a stabby character, but for hard enemies I tend to petrify, stone arrow as they approacch and then stab when they sleep.

You see an enemy sleeping next to a wall. Step out of LOS, stay out of LOS as you walk to the opposite side of the wall, passwall through the wall so that you end up adjacent to the sleeping enemy, and stab it.

You can one-shot a lot of enemies this way, but if you don't kill it with the stab, you are then adjacent to the awake enemy, which is often not a good thing. Since you haven't trained much stealth and short blades, you probably won't be able to kill things with one stab. So I don't recommend this tactic unless you train up the skills to beef up your stab damage.

Let me just add that putting an exclusion on an enemy is super helpful for passwall stabbing, so that you don't accidentally walk into LOS. (It's also helpful for avoiding enemies if you're not going to passwall stab them.)

So, stabbing is amazing with better stealth skill - even with 0 weapon skill. So much so its infinitely better to kite, lure, petrify and stab.

I found a nice whip (The curare one), but I don't use it that much as petrify stabbing really is better than any other way I've found so far to kill stuff. It outperforms anything else in my killing arsenal by a long shot - Except on things with high MR.

I'm not quite sure on the best way to develop my character past this though, as I'm sure as I go on, its going to only get harder and harder to petrify things - and then I'm going to be stuck. I just ran into Kirke, and even after reading a scroll of Vulnerability, 5 consecutive petrify attempts failed at 45% or so chance (Which has happened so much that I Simply don't bother trying to petrify anything with less than 60% chance any more, I really wish this game was pseudorandom)

I've really found LRD underwhelming, even with 1% failure rate and overtrained earth skill. Perhaps thats because I'm used to the offensive power of DEFE of Vehumet? I don't know. But sometimes with unlucky rolls I can't even kill a single elephant before I run out of mana, and have to reset the fight and try again.

Whats next for me here? I have a few options, but none which seem hugely compelling to switch on to in order to continue.

You mostly need ways to kill uniques until you find better earth magic.
Anything which is not unique and has high MR you'll probably be able to take out with sandblast+stone arrow.

Evocations is good in general - though you need to get better wands for it to work reliably. You have a +3 aptitude, which helps. The lightning rod can be very good.
Makleb summons are also good. For really dangerous enemies I usually summon 3 of them. Even Minor Destruction can be nice when you're out of mp, though ideally you shouldn't let that happen.

In my game I trained 10 shortblades and 12 evocations, and added a shield for defence.
I'm taking out most dangerous uniques by passwall stabbing them, which takes them to 50% hp, and then using acid + scattershot (trying to corrode them before using scattershot if possible).

Some tactics which might also help:
- be aware of armour. Sandblast & LRD are vastly more effective against a hydra than against an Orc wearing plate armour.
- Sometimes petrify at a low percentage is worth it. I find 30-45% chance in general worth it, and if something's dangerous and I have a line of retreat I'll accept 15% chance of success.
- your staff of earth can increase the petrify % significantly
- identify your scrolls?

I spam confuse onto stuff at ~50% odds all the time, that's fine. Petrify is fine too. You also have mephitic cloud for AoE confusion, see if you can get a book of cantrips or such for confusing touch.

You should have blink, swiftness, and probably apportation memorized. These are all useful utility spells and they're all castable for you right now.

Yeah, the only reason I ever got Evocations for was for CBOE - but at this point I feel like I don't need it just yet. Plus I don't have a CBOE! But its cheap so I guess I could change a bit.

Is it possible to passwall stab things which have already woken up? If so, how would I know where they are?

Scroll wise, Un-ID'd I have:

scroll of brand weapon - Not needed as I Don't have a weapon worth branding. My stabby thing is my go to.
scroll of enchant weapon - Can't enchant my go to weapon.
scroll of holy word - No demons yet
scroll of magic mapping - I'm a deep dwarf; and I can't think of anything I need to map
scroll of noise - Useless
scroll of silence - Useless for me
scroll of summoning - Useful, but I have Makhleb summons
scroll of torment - Useless for me

Blink is on my to-get list, although I have been putting it off since I often find I can just run away till I find a wall I can passwall away through. Swiftness is probably a good shout though!

I never really found much use for Apportation... Although It might be good for apporting runes and running (Which I've never done before, I'm always tempted to kill everything)

For the first one, Evocations can help your versatility a lot even at low levels. With the great aptitude, spending XP for a solid 10 is cheap.

For the second, stabs are stabs. If your target was already awake, but hasn't seen you, it is no different from an ordinary stab attempt where your char didn't just phase through a wall. Knowing where your targets are, that's enemy detection - antennae mutations, the assassin boots fixedart, or Ashenzari worship will give that. If you have none of the three, train up stealth to scout your targets without waking them up, then move around and passwall next to them.
There is always something new to learn.

Evocations is actually really good imo. It makes wands stronger, and some wands are really good. Besides acid wands the following become good at high evokations: scatter shot, iceblast, paralysis, polymorph, disintegration. Then there's also xp-charged evocables and various staves. I suppose a DD would be one of the best species to try out training evocations with.

You have 10 spell levels left. Why delay Blink? Or do you think you won't want it ever?

I actually agree about apportion, it's only rarely useful. Mephitic cloud would make this part of the game easier, but I wouldn't invest too much in it.

As Sorcerous said, passwall stabs only work if the target hasn't woken up.

He doesn't have to "invest too much" in mephitic. He could learn it right now, never train magic for the rest of the game, and it is still useful into and through depths. It's already on 7% fail.

Mephitic is somewhat useful in lair, and very strong in orc, elf, vaults, and depths. It is still somewhat useful in Zot, but there are usually better options. It is obsolete in extended.

Yes he can use it now. He can make his current character stronger without it ever costing him more than an amnesia scroll. He'd have to invest in it if he upgrades to a shield, or upgrades his body armour, or wants it to have higher spell power.

Mephitic has actually gotten me killed in Elf on at least one occasion, because it is so much stronger in Orc than in Elf. I expected it to be stronger than it was, took a risk, and died. Ultraviolent actually showed it in the Sudden Deaths video of the CSDC tournament :oops:

You have a scroll of acquirement. Use it ASAP : armour are always a good bet.

I would get Blink + Swiftness + Apportation online. Not of big fan of Mephitic Cloud but I admit you could use it with good benefit.

Training some Evocations as many suggested is a good idea. It can be paired with using the staff of earth for popcorn kills :

You probably found no other amulet. You can drop Regen as it's useless for you (unless paired with ambrosia...).

I think you're ready for Orc. Don't hesitate to Petrify + LRD for packs, I fear you won't be stealthy enough to stab your way throughout the level.

Edit : I recently discovered how good BVC is. If you ever find it, learn it ASAP :)

I'm doing a cosplay challenge right now where to get full marks you have to go to elf or abyss after lair, orc, and d:15. So entering elf routinely at XL 15-16 as draconian.

I've died a few times, none of them in elf, and in two of the runs I used mephitic extensively. You still have to use good judgment, but I highly doubt that it was the spell that "got you killed" in elf. It was probably that "took a risk" part :p.

It IS loud, which implies luring, using choke points, or having an escape route. And you don't want to stand in front of crystal spears hoping the confuse procs when one will kill you. This is true of most any magic below level 7-9 however.

You've got a bunch of decent weapons and Minor Servants is super strong with 10 Invocations. From the weapons you have, pick either Maces or Polearms, train that and Fighting. Spam Minor Servants. Alternately, wait to pick a weapon skill until you see what you find in Orc and Lair:6. Axes are especially nice for DD because they are more likely to be vampiric branded.

Train more Invocations if you want. About 15 or 16 is where you have a 1% chance of summoning a hostile Major Servant, but Major Servant is really a late-game panic button more than an upgrade to Minor Servants. 2–3 Minor Servants, along with your own offense, will handle almost any 1-v-1 threat. Plus, you can swap places with them and they can block and distract if you need to escape.
