Apparently Blade Hands has the same affect on hydras as long blades and axes. Go figure...

Why do hydras have this mechanic again?

The myth from ancient Greece tells of the hero Herakles who fought the Hydra, who grew two new heads for each one that was severed. Herakles could not win cutting this way, so his cousin set fire to the nearby forest, and Herakles used burning tree chunks to burn the wounds so the Hydra couldn't grow new heads. The final head was rumoured to be immortal, so Herakles trapped the Hydra under an enormous stone to stop it forever.

Because of other mythical nods and all-around accuracy that DCSS uses, this is probably the reason.

So why don't we have to kill 1-headed hydras with large rocks?

Because large rocks are not available for all chars.

On the gaming side, because taverners would just go into long-winded rants about using immortal 1-headed remnants for some stupid gain in safety or piety or whatever, and then claim "oh woe is me with this tedium" or "optimal kiting pro advice" or something equally deranged. As if consciously choosing to drag around non-threats is the fault of the game content being abusable rather than the players doing the abuse, somehow.

Yeah, I'm making a long-winded rant about the mechanic of chopping heads, specifically having to worry about whether the one awesome weapon you've found will make hydras stronger and carrying around a terrible alternative weapon just for hydras.

Then, take the OotS solution instead - enough new heads and the hydra collapses due to shortage of blood reaching the brains. Additional XP for this kind of win, for the extra risk.

I think this should be mandatory for role-play purposes...
