CIP - FoEn of WJC - need advice

So, inspired by petercordia's attempt, I decided to try and win a FoEn of WJC. I splatted at least a dozen ants before one finally started to take off. I would very much appreciate any suggestions re skilling, magic choice, WJC usage.

So far I've been relying on hexes and consumables, with WJC backup. Confuse or EH + Lunge seems to take care of the smallfry. Whirlwind and Serpent Lash have been adequate for escape to stairs. I used Confuse, Lunge and Might to take down the Warlord, and Tukima, Lamp and Lig to take down the Minotaur.

I got Assassin's Boots and those artifact ones from Acquire. Should I be using Assasin's instead? None of those perks seem too useful for a Fo enchanter, but maybe I am underestimating whtat +stab does?

You should check the weapons you've found so far, look for any good ones. +stab makes it so that any weapon will get the same stabbing bonus as short blades.

So would those boots make the elec hand axe good? Find some sleeping dudes, wall jump into em and cleave stab everyone?

Disclaimer: I have no experience with WJC. (I do have experience with Formicids)

I think the boots make all 2-handed weapons better than short-blades. I am particularly fond of Formicids with Staves (Lajatangs from the mid-game onwards), because you get high-ish damage with a low XP investment. Any 2-handed axe, polearm or long-blade would probably be more powerful, but also require more XP. Polearms synergise with the Assassin's Boots, but anti-synergise with WJC, and I think axes synergise with WJC. (Again: I have no experience with WJC.) Long-blades would allow riposte-stabs, which are really funny, but probably don't increase your winrate much. (I got riposte-stabs myself by using a dagger & the gloves of fencing.)
It's probably not worth training a 2H weapon to mindelay right now seeing as your max skill level is 11.3. If I had to pick something in your current situation I'd go with long-blades, because they crosstrain with short-blades.

WRT your wall-jump stab question:
If you wall jump into a group of enemies, won't you stab them all to death anyway? (I've never tried, and I'd like to know if I'm wrong ;))
I would imagine that wall-jumping into a group of enemies with an axe gives a big advantage when they'e awake though. (Which is why I think axes synergise with WJC.)

Wall jump doesn't cause stabs or cleaves, but whirlwind causes stabs (with reduced damage), but no cleaves, lunge causes both cleave and stab.
(You can of course lung and whirlwind in the same attack by moving towards an enemy while stepping past a different one)

Lunge and whirlwind do attacks equal to the number of attacks you could normally perform inside the same amount of time it would take to move (lunge is one move, wall jump two) It's averaged so if, for example, your attack delay is 4 aut, and your move is 10 aut, you'd attack twice, and have a 50% chance of a third on a lunge.

For distraction/confuse/petrify stabs, you want as many *attempts* at stabbing per movement, so you want low attack delay.
For sleeping stabs, you will always succeed, so you want to make sure you kill it (Which you will) but higher damage is better, because if you don't kill it, the second/third attacks won't be stabs.
For not-stabs, you obviously want to do the most damage per unit time.

For low skill investment demon whip probably the best middle ground between low attack delay and better-than-dagger damage. For WJC stabs, quick blades are also pretty fantastic (but don't take advantage of the boots) Long blades obviously crosstrain with shortblades, so if you pick up a demon blade, that's a good way to go, particularly if you want to be using daggers for the EH+lunge stabs, and switching over to demon blades for non-stabby melee.

Really the boots just open up the field to "Whatever you find lying around" and you should just pick the best one.

Incidentally since the change to it, confusing touch is lots of fun with WJC/stabbing, you can activate it, lunge with a dagger, confuse on the first hit and stab/kill it on the second, all in one move command.

Thanks guys. This is really helpful. WJC is weird, but fun to try and figure out.

From some casual testing, cleave stabs with small axes didn't seem impressive and reach doesn't stack with Lunge. So I'll save the the Assassin's Boots until I find a better sword.

Yeah, the elec brand is good, but it does the same damage whether your stabbing or not, it's pretty nice for regular non-stabby combat, but for stabs it's not going to do anything special.

The elec long sword isn't really great or anything, but is probably better than the hand axe.

Learned something else today about WJC: Whirlwind does not synergize with Amulet of Acrobat. Too bad, that would have been sweet. :twisted:

This ant is now more of a caster than a fighter. My defenses suck so I'm killing hex-resistant stuff with Prism. It takes 4-5 casts to nuke Death Yaks and Hydras, but with Whirlwind, I can always escape (i.e., if they get too close, lure them near a set of stairs, Whirl, get 1 hex separation, go up). So it's tedious, but low risk.

Long term goal is to use Freezing Cloud as my killdudes (thinking, Cloud then Whirl back and forth as they die). Course if the RNGs want to give me something better, I'll change gears. I also realized, much to my chagrin, that I left the only buckler I found back in the Lab. Sigh.

Shatter is amazing if you can get it, and suit your aptitudes better than ice/air magic (and it's in your library). I'll grant that you probably won't be able to get Shatter online soon, just something to keep in mind as you select spells.

Did you find any regular/large shields? Formicids need less skill to nullify the shield penalty, and have good aptitudes.
I can't see in your dump whether you're already doing these things, but remember to use kill-holes and use Dazzling Spray for high-MR enemies. You can make a kill-hole by digging a little zig-zag into some rock. You won't get any benefit from WJC whilst you're in a kill-hole, which is sad, but I expect kill-holes are still good for you. Kill-holes combine well with (large) shields & Lajatangs/swords/maces / confuse & EH / Conjure Flame.
I'd train much more stealth. If you're in a kill hole with a bunch of stealth most monsters will forget about you. Furthermore, stealth is good for stabbing (precisely as good as short blade skill at this point), will allow you walk around without getting noticed, and will allow you to use darts effectively in the early game (Later in the game you'd need to train throwing in addition to stealth for darts to remain useful.) Darts of datura are super fun and powerful, but might also get you killed. Just like shield skill, stealth is cheap on Formicids.

If you're learning some air magic you should probably also pick up Summon Lightning Spire.

Sounds like you're doing a good job with Fulminant Prism. It's a nice spell which gives you some AOE damage :)

I resorted to Prism mostly out of necessity and blind luck. Since it uses Hex and Conj, I noticed it was already online when I was looking for a way to deal with Death Yaks.

I think I am doing something wrong with Dazzle. I fired like six of those at a Death Yak and it just laughed and kept on coming. Do I need more spellpower or something?

Good suggestion about the shield! Lo and behold, there's a plain one lying on the floor nearby. I'll go snag that and work it up. My ant really feels way too squishy. I'll focus on some Stealth too.

I haven't been using killholes at all because my ant's defenses suck. But I'll look to try it more once I get a good shield and maybe better armor... Thanks, peter!

Ant got lucky and found artifact leather with +Inv. The AC is meh, but having inviso-stab is fun! Also just found a large shield, so that outta help with defenses. Ant doesn't feel nearly as squishy as before so thanks everyone for the tips!

WJC feels kinda meh. The extra step for stab is handy, but not strictly necessary. I'm basically using my god as a free escape card (Serpent Lash). Ant would probably be stronger if he had Oka or plant god, but well, it's a learning experience. Not sure I'd ever play WJC again, except maybe on a MiFi axe wielder.

So far the endgame plan is still abusing ice clouds. We'll see if that changes with any RNG gifts in the near future!
